Chump Car Race -$500 crap-can race car -BIR June 5th-6th

So it looks like i have a couple guys lined up to enter the chump car race event at BIR this summer. its about 95% of the same rules as the 24 hours of LeMoNs, but this one just happens to be local.

If you have done of these, or have any insight that might be useful, let me know your thoughts.
This particular event is actually 2-7 hour enduros.

I would probably be in. Im not sure on who I could get as a sponsor though. I should try to get the BIR staff to build, and race, sponsored by BIR.

I will be working next to BIR's mechanic, and one of the head instructors for the next few weeks restoring another Spec racer..I will talk to them about sponsoring, or just building and racing a car.

Hello everyone, I am john Bjerke, the regional coordinator for ChumpCar. Any drivers looking to get on a team, or any teams looking for drivers feel free to let me know. I can help put people together, as well as answer most other questions.

There is plenty of time to get a car built for BIR and Iowa speedway. FYI, the novice restriction has been lifted at Iowa. There will be a chicane for the first 6 hours, and then it will be removed. If your car can actually reach 120, you probably will reach it at Iowa. It is going to be one fast course.

BIR will be run on the new road course. (2) 7 hour Enduros. Chump car will be providing a BBQ dinner on Saturday night.

Shoot me an email if you got any questions or want some fliers to pass out.

    Thanks,
    John

BIR did have a car in the event. it had its share of problems, but it was very cool to see the owner of the track in part of the action. That guy is a great guy!

Yeah initially Herm Johnson, Jon Belanger and I were considering doing something, but the cost scared us away. The mechanic (Jon) decided to get back into vintage racing this year, so he was no longer interested.

The BIR car was originally to be driven by: Jed and Kristi Copham(track owners) Herm Johnson, and Gary Curtis. Last I talked to Herm he was no longer able to run, and Jon was taking his place.
I havent been able to get ahold of anyone to see how it went.

I'v been checking facebook and other places fairly often trying to see how the event went but no one has mentioned it, including chump car. Glad you guys updated this!

Jungle, his pal Dave and I are already car shopping. We're leaning VW at the moment but are also on the lookout for an old circle track car. Basicly, something with a cage in it like the "Winona Mustang" would put us weeks ahead.

    My worries:

1, Too many cooks. Hopefully with just three of us things will go well. We'll most likely build the thing then ask three more drivers to buy in later.

2, Two hour driving stints form folks who are used to 20 minute sessions.

3, Us vs Them problems with the LeMons series. There are a few challenging personalities on the forum as well like one guy using his team's website to bash a former team member and then the PCA as a whole; really childish stuff. Others seem to be taking this way to seriously. Fer real folks, if I had the money some of these folks are spending, I'd just go NASA/PCA/SCCA racing. But, as my 1991 BIR Jack Pine Sprints T-shirt says: "Pl$$ On Politics, Let's Just Race".

PS, I had a bit on car cost and sponsorship here for a few minutes. I took it out in order to give it some more thought and try again later.

Has the "golden age" of ultra-cheap road racing come to an end? It happens in most forms of motorsports as people start to decide that winning is more fun than losing.

(No really, we built this 800 hp IMSA GTO class Mustang for $2010. Boeing was throwing away all that out-of-date carbon fiber cloth so it was free. And since we already own the autoclave, CNC mill, and CAD system, none of that counts....)
