Just learned tonight that the Chippewa Valley Sports Car Club and the Chippewa Valley Tech. College are planning on being able to hold the 9/28/08 autocross at the 'big' lot on Clairemont Ave. :rockon

MAE should be ready to accept pre-registration by the end of next week.

this is a better lot than the one where the last event was held out there?

I thought that lot was great, had a blast that day.

As of now I'm planning on attending the 9/28 event as well so I'm looking forward to this better peice of pavement.

Equally nice surface and about twice the size.

No comparison. The Clairmont lot is large enough to support a Nationals-level course.

Agreed. The CVTC Main Lot is probably about 4 times the size of Midway, an excellent surface, plus lots of parking for car and trucks/trailer. I just registered, and was 28th entrant. It's only about an hour from the Hudson I-94 bridge to the site.

what are you trying to say Eric? you think I can't get the new enging in in a month? I'm insulted :)

I registered as well with a car that doesn't currently have an engine installed... it only has a picture of an engine, but it only had one previous owner... James Bond!

The civic will have a new heart, tuned up and tested plenty to shake out any potential bugs.

can't wait for a nice big course to give the "new" civic a run for the money

I think they just expect people to show up for it, pre-registration doesn't sound like it'll be required. I don't know what time, but the start will be in the p-lot at Godfathers Pizza on Clairemont and Craig Rd. in EC. You can send Dick Feaney an e-mail through the club at cvscc@cvscc.org

There is still space to register for the "2008 Grand Prix at the Bridge" autocross in Eau Claire this weekend. MAC assists Chippewa Sports Car Club with this event, and I can assure you it will be worth the drive. This is an outstanding lot, and you can expect a Nationals-level course. (A free fun run will be awarded to the first person who correctly guesses the origin of the course on Sunday.) In addition, registration is limited to 100 drivers, so you can expect 6+ runs.

Is the vehicle noise restriction rule still in place for this event?

It doesn't say so on the event flyer, but I would plan for it. The lot is quite close to a residential area and I know last year there were a couple cars asked to leave due to being way too loud. "Too loud" as judged by the EM.

Probably not but it wouldn't hurt to have your little bolt-in silencer with you just in case. The cars that were too loud last year were a Viper with a cat-only straight-through exhaust and a Dodge Ram SRT-10 with sidepipes. It was painful-loud when they launched.

The little slip in silencer slipped out for good after the W&W car show. I don't have that option right now. I don't think it is in the same league as the cars you mention though.

Okay, I will plan accordingly.

I forgot to ask, are there any gas stations near the event that serve 92 or 93 octane unleaded?

For those of us who for one reason or another did not get to nationals, perhaps you guys who are gunning for another crack at the course would want to drive it one handed, or left foot for everything, or maybe with a pirate patch over one eye to add a little challenge and handicap your runs so its an even playing field for the rest of us?

And if you're thinking of doing this event, check out the rsvp thread for the root beer floats and be counted!

Not necessary. The course being used this Sunday hasn't been used at a previous Nationals - at least not in a form that would provide a significant advantage.

p.s. Charles is close, but I'll need a more specific description. ;)

Copying a course used at the 2008 SCCA nationals appears to be an unfair advantage for those that did attend. Just my 2 cents.

I don't know what Steve's course looks like this Sunday, but I am absolutely planning on using elements of the East and West course for the Canterbury courses.

While you might feel this is an unfair advantage to those who went, I can assure you that it is not. Not only can't you exactly replicate the course...it's just a guess and might be kinda close in places...the two courses will be combined in a way that it is all new for everyone. You simply cannot duplicate it exactly, and the surface conditions, slope of the lot, .... all make it a little different anyway. Don't forget that we usually run it backwards the next day (necessitating minor changes to flow both directions) ...no one has done that. (Except for Mike B, who spun and tried to.) :)

The reason for doing this is simply to bring home the flavor of Nationals to our folks who could not make the trip. To make use of the big real estate we occasionally get to it's best effect. I personally think this is a fun thing to do, it gives everyone a taste of what is was like, and I hope that people appreciate it rather than feel like someone's trying to get some kind of "unfair" advantage. I don't think the people that went to Nats are thinking like that.

914 Dave
09-24-2008, 06:37 AM
Hopefully I didn't start a fire here- I know in the past elements of prior courses have been used, and why not? If a section of "A" is fun to drive, and another section of "B" is a blast to shoot thru, why not put them togather. My post was intended to poke a little fun at those lucky individuals who could put togather a trip to Nats, and were getting all excited at "redemption". Go ahead and try to copy it exactally- it can't be done for all the reasons Pat states.

I still think it'd be funny to see all the Nat drivers with eyepatches...

I'd love another crack at the 2008 Nationals course, even if my time was DQd from competition. Just to prove to myself that I'm not a hopeless driver.

There are only so many elements in autocross. Those with experience are at an advantage, but not an unfair one. I wish that I had seen more Nationals style elements before going to this one. With a large lot, there really are things you can't do with a small one. Looking forward to seeing what Steve and Pat put together.

As Pat said, you can never truly duplicate a course onto a different site. Besides, I guarantee the course this Sunday is not a direct copy of a prior Nationals course. I'm confident no one who attended Nationals will have an appreciable advantage on the CVTC course, based on their exposure to a course in Topeka.

If you don't mind driving a white Miata I'd be game. I have to warn you that I put in a manual rack and need to work the caster because it steers very hard right now. I'm working on it tonight and if you're interested I'll let you know how it is going. Bring the MaxQ.

pretty fun event! Tough course again, and my car just doesn't have the grip it had before the tires were flipped, but unofficially I think I still got 2nd. I'm absolutely blown away by the times Todd was running. Only a second off my raw time? In a H-stock car?! Paxxed me by over a second... Sure hope he can make it to Canterbury ;)
