Mazda RevItUp Returns for 2004

A successor to the GLC, 323 and the Protégé, the MAZDA3 introduces unmistakable Mazda styling and functional intelligence to the compact segment, exuding the fun-to-drive character that is the essence of a Mazda.

Hailed by Grassroots Motorsports Magazine as the Editor’s Choice on its "20 Things That Rocked Our World in 2003," Mazda Rev It Up was a smash hit with serious competitors as well as participants just out to have fun improving their driving skills. Expected to draw a sell-out 30,000 competitors, Mazda Rev It Up 2004 will offer even more opportunities for personal instruction and to test yourself—and your friends—against the clock. But one thing will remain the same, the insanely low cost for participating and competing—$40.

"Mazda Rev It Up is still the best behind-the-wheel bargain in the automotive world," said Robert Davis, senior vice president of marketing and product development for Mazda North American Operations. "We are proud that we can offer refinements that will enhance the experience for our participants, while keeping the cost low and the thrill-quotient high."

The 2004 edition of Mazda Rev It Up will feature the "Always On" Driver’s Lounge—a place where competitors can go to ask questions and get driving tips from the pros—at any time during the day. Located at the Information Tower, the "Always On" Driver’s Lounge will enable hungry competitors to quiz the instructors to their heart’s content.

For those who feel compelled to chart their progress at every step of the way, Mazda Rev It Up will time every skills clinic and practice lap in 2004. Thus, competitors can see how much they improve on each individual run, and put the pressure on their compatriots. Mazda Rev It Up participants will be able to choose from among three skills clinics for a total of eight competitive laps, before heading to the competition course for the final two timed runs.

But if you want to add some additional seat time into the mix, try the Go-Kart track. Some of the best drivers in the world started in karting, and the same abilities practiced in the MAZDA3 on the skills and competitions courses can be perfected on the karting track. For an extra nominal charge on the Go-Kart track, you’ll get plenty of wheel-to-wheel driving and a dose of good clean fun to boot.

In addition to the "chalk talk," three skills clinics and the competition course, participants will once again be treated to displays from Mazda, Falken Tire and other lifestyle sponsors, making it a full day of fun and exploration for automotive enthusiasts and those who enjoy the active lifestyle.

Winners from each of the 15 cities will once again be flown to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the dramatic and intense Mazda Rev It Up Finals. In 2004 the wildcard berths are to be chosen from among the top national leaders in each class —- "Just for Fun", "Novice," "Club" and "Pro," the top scoring woman competitor and highest scoring non-city winner. The last two can come from any of the classes. That opens the door for just about anyone to win the grand prize MAZDA3.

There are, however, some other changes of which competitors should take note: Southern California competitors will have their choice of locations in either Irvine or San Diego to compete. Several of the sites within the cities have changed, so please check the schedule carefully. The tour, which begins nearly a month earlier and ends in late June, is currently slated for only Saturdays and Sundays in 2004. Please be aware that some dates and locations may change, but if you sign-up in advance, you will be kept informed.

Since group sign-ups proved to be a big hit in the inaugural year, Mazda Rev It Up is once again trying to accommodate friends who want to brag and boast together by registering groups in 20-minute increments. However, these are only available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

As before, drivers will be able to see how they fare against all others in their class during the weekend and throughout the tour. The event website, www.MazdaRevItUp.com , will show how drivers measure up against others across the country. Participants may register online at www.MazdaRevItUp.com.

Glad to see the Minnesota site has changed to Canterbury! The lousy surface at the Fairgrounds cost me a spin on my second run. I was soooooo P.O.'d about that, I went to Chicago a couple weeks later. One lousy cone cost me a trip out West since I ran a score of 850 on my second run, easily the top score in Chicago that weekend, and tying the fourth highest score in the nation. (Sorry about the boasting...I still cringe at the thought!) Oh well...I get another shot!! Woo, hoo!

The real question is how did they get Cantebury?!!!

Good question?

Also isn't that the same weekend as our Valley Fair event?

Possibly the same way that Ford did. They have lots of money. I do know that a person (not to be named here) was negotiating with Canterbury Park for a site last year and that he went elsewhere when it became apparent that their asking price was going to be more than twice his budget.

Mazda's budgets make our's look like a pittance. When someone like Mazda knocks on the door and whips out thier checkbook, people listen.

Steve, I believe the date of the Valleyfair AX were revised from this weekend to the weekend prior. (I'm not at home so I can't be absolutely sure right at the moment.) This is Mothers Day weekend I think, and we wanted to stay away from that.

The Valleyfair event is scheduled for May 2nd.

It looks like maybe they have taken some steps to fix the wrong I felt last summer. $40.00 and a whole day for two lousy timed runs. I vowed to not do that again. Now they are claiming 8 timed runs? Maybe. What about limiting a driver to only run in one event anywhere in the country? That would have gotten Salah to the final wouldn't it? It might have saved Patrick some dough too.

As I read the press release, there will still be only two "official" timed runs. It appears they're adding timing to the skills clinics, which may make them more interesting to participate in for local bragging rights, but nothing more.

I agree it would be nice to limit the number of events drivers can attend. However, I'm not sure that will discourage drivers from hopping to other regions. If you happen to know someone like Mark Daddio is attending your local event, why not find a "softer" event to attend instead? The potential rewards are significant enough that some top drivers will be willing to spend the money to increase their chances.

p.s. IMHO - they already made the biggest improvement possible for Minneapolis - not using that crappy State Fairgrounds lot again! ;)

I have the good news and the bad news...

The Good News!
My wife Karin is expecting a baby boy. That's right, I will be a dad soon

The Bad News!

The due date is May 7 !
That means I probably won't be attending the Rev-It-Up OR the Valleyfair event, two events I really did not want to miss.

Obviously the good news FAR outweighs the bad news, and at least I have Ice-AutoX and Indoor Karting to look forward to in the coming months.

MnBiker, what I meant and probably wasn't clear in typing, was, limit any one person to one entry total, no matter where he/she chooses to enter. I.E.: if Bob86ZZ4 enters the challenge in MPLS for '04, that is the only entry he is allowed in '04, period. He cannot then go to LA and register there too. That's what I think they should do. But what do I know? And Salah, congratulations. And, you cheated to look and see that he will be a he. My boys are 15 and 12 now and it just gets better all the time. You should see the 15 yr. olde drive. He wants to hurry up and get older so he can autocross. We are going to friend's lake cabin for New Years and hope to set up a little ice autocross on the lake there and do some friendly competition, all in the wife's Rav4.

Sorry to change the subject, back to the Rev-It-Up then.

Salah,
Congrats! There are some things more important than autox.

Congrats Salah! The last I saw you was when a bunch of us "enthusists" went to Perkins in Apple Valley after an event.

Being a daddy is one of the greatest feelings ever. I'm sure you know that already.

Now you can order that "baby" Recaro seat!!!

Good luck at Farmington:)

Who is going to the Mazda event?

BTW MNbiker, do you have the WRX wagon in STX class?
If you do, I took pictures at Valley Fair. I played with some of that car. I can post or email if you like.

I have two Comp Tickets to the Mazda Rev It Up that I am not going to use. They will go first-come-first-serve and I presume whoever wants them will have to register tonight so...
