Chris,
Can you fill us in on the DMVR event at Sandpiper on the 19th?
I copied the following from the website, but would also like to know the travel time from Cities, length/speed of the usual course there, number of runs, whether they do buck runs, and anything else different about the way the DMVR AXers do things. Give me some good reasons to come down!!!
Thanks,
Paul

Well, you've got all the details down. Here's the rest of the scoop:

The Sandpiper site is located on the shore of Saylorville lake. It comes complete with a beach, lake breezes, and sailboats. No, I'm not kidding. It's the most beautiful autox location I've ever seen. The lot we compete on has a slope at one end that is usually used for one or two off-camber turns. It's bigger than Midway, but not quite as large as Waterloo. In the past, courses have been from 45 seconds up to over 100 seconds and have generally been in the mid to upper second gear range. I still remember watching John Haluska there as he took a long sweeper on the second gear rev limiter in his ES miata. That man is "Crazy Fast". But I digress.... The surface is sealed asphalt. There isn't a lot of ultimate grip and the break-away characteristics of my Azenis always seemed different there than anywhere else.

Location-wise, it's about 10 minutes off I35 north of Des Moines. I want to say it's exit 82 but you'll want to double check that on a map. It's the Polk City exit. I'd estimate travel time from the Twin Cities at about 4 hours. Salah has been there and can probably give you a better estimate on that.

The DMVR operation is pretty relaxed and we tend to sacrifice quantity for quality in our runs. Expect 4 runs. More are possible depending on how the day goes. It's usually up to the EM's if we get fun runs or not. We had them when Adam and I ran an event, but a lot of EM's don't.

There is a considerable amount of talent that shows up at our events including a past SCCA Solo2 champion and some possible future champions.

C'mon down!

I'm planning to drive down for this event, and maybe the last one in November as well.
Sandpiper is a fun place to run. It's a very pretty site, and and the course will provide some unique challenges. The events are pretty relaxed and folks are friendly. Don't let that fool you though - there are some very good National-caliber drivers in DMVR.

Chris, Paul, or anyone . . .

Do you know if SCCA rules require a rollbar for open cars in Prepared classes?

A November autocross might be possible, and I have lots of relatives in that area.

later,
Steve.

Chris,
What time do you think you'd you be going past the McDonalds where we met last event (Clear Lake exit???) on your way to this event, I will be going down, probabally caravanning with Steve, wondering if we could hook up... To anyone thinking of going --- I'd also be interested in car swapping so both drivers could double our fun & runs, anyone interested in driving cute? What'cha got to swap?
Thanks,
Paul

steveh, I just looked in the scca solo ll rulebook and it states that all open Prepared catagory vehicles shall have at a minimum a roll bar complying with appendix c. And appendix c gives the specs so you better call before you make the drive down and are dissapointed.

The good news is that I'm free that day. The bad news is that my car is going into storage for the winter the day before. Anyone willing to let me drive their car?

Alex,

Solution:
Store the car the next w/e :tease:
I would like to drive two cars, but if no one volunteers by Friday you can ride down with me and co drive the MINI.

Paul

PS. If you beat my times again you may be taking the greyhound bus back...

Paul,
Give me a call saturday if you want to meet. I probably won't be getting on I35 until much further south.
