this is just Sunday
Its up to someone else to start a Thursday league if they want

I'm really tempted, but I have to ask. Why only six weeks?
the Holidays really make it hard to run more, this time of year
and it starts costing more...for more events...its not a flat fee.
Trust me this works well
When its over we usually do an enduro or a Sunday VS Thursday pants off dance off also

That is the normal league length. We basically extend the league over a majority of the winter and works out well by not being doing it every week. Fun time and interesting to see some people on Sunday morning after a night of fun the night before.

It's the corners I'm worried about
the corners is where the heavy guys are faster......our tires warm quicker
and you weight the outside tires better.
Light guys are faster on acceleration, but Burnsville track layout doesn't have too slow of corners
COME ON RACERS don't miss the opportunity to bump your fellow racers

Well, there's two names on that list I don't recognize but I think it's safe to say my tires will warm the fastest.
The little rolleyes smiley was supposed to imply that I'm gonna suck in the corners aswell as the straights

Rick, not too many stories yet
1/2 the field is the returning group
and 1/2 is new to the league.
The speed difference is the only thing at this point between the 2 groups
that makes for "stories"
Lots of lapped traffic.
But that will change as the "New Half" will get up to speed shortly

One of the best ways to learn is to try to stick with the faster guys for as long as possible after you let them by. Try to let them by while losing as little speed as possible, then tuck in behind, watch their line and try to copy their moves.
Don't worry though. Newbs always need a couple races to get their bearings. Took Katie and I a while too when we started running a couple years ago. After you get a couple more races under your belt, though, you'll be gettin' the hang of it. 8)

also, should I try and be less concerned about letting people pass (I slowed down quite a bit as to avoid running into problems when getting passed)

Just move over to the outside of the turn and let the faster person pass you. If they can't pass you when you're completely out of the line then they probably aren't that fast. :)

Well, you really /should/ do the best you can to avoid interfering with a fight among the leaders. But as you mentioned, even just trying to stay out of the way can sometimes be difficult. There's only one line through most of the course, and karts are so equally matched that even people who are "way faster" are really only faster in a few key places.
But there is a certain art to letting people by too, and you can learn to do it smoothly without costing yourself too much speed in the process. One thing to remember is that they usually only have one flag person, so they always throw the blue flag near the start/finish line. This means the person coming up behind could already be right on your a$$...or they might be a little ways back still (but coming up fast). When you see the flag, look behind you before you do anything. Sometimes you can go another corner or two before letting them by without holding them up, then slide over to let them by at just the right moment, and tuck in right behind.
But whatever...don't get too worked up about any of it. Just remember that situational awareness is just as important as figuring out how to physically drive the kart. Do the best you can, learn as much as you can, go as fast as you can, and have fun. :D

I think the worst was letting people pass in turns 1/2(?) the ones close to eachother after the lights.
I hope I get better the next time.
BTW, was Andres using an open face helmet? Did he have goggles? I just thought I read that it had to be a full face helmet or one with a faceshield or something. I just really want to use my own helmet which is open face.

I got screwed out of two top-3 finishes this week, I'm so pissed off at Tim.
I could almost understand the first penalty, since he wasn't in the kart and couldn't necessarily see that there was nothing Chris or I could do to avoid that wreck (which probably started three karts back, with all of us on each others' bumpers) but that second penalty just put me over the edge. I realized my mistake, (passing during a pace lap) which was caused by his lack of communication of just what his mysterious hand signals were supposed to mean, and gave katie her position back, and still got the black flag.
Thanks ********, you just helped... well, nobody. (except maybe the people in positions 6-10)

I know I’m not in this league but the same thing is starting to happen in the Monday night league too… When someone passes you, it doesn’t give you the right to basically drive through the next corner and use them as a brake… After the race is finished and you ask why they do that, they say, well my braking points are different… Not, I just spent the last 5 lap running you down, now I pass you and suddenly the brake zone change to the side of my kart…
I will talk to Tim tonight about the blue flags… Sometimes it’s hard to tell who’s coming from behind, ProKart needs to pick up the game a bit…

Yeah, sunday's was a kind of a unique situation, due to a faulty kart and a grippy track. The timeline of doom was:
- katie got out front, but had a slow/faulty kart.
- due to the grippy surface, it was difficult to pass
- a train formed, everyone pretty well constantly on everyone else's bumper
- steven? managed to pass katie, got a bit of distance
- I passed katie, started to close on steven
- she realized she had a bad kart, pitted in so the rest of the train started to catch up
- I made a move on steven, it didn't work, (grippy surface) chris got ahead of me, but I was going faster (IMO, of course) and the rest of the train was right on us
- chris, me, and the train came into the S at the end of the back straight, everyone bumper to bumper
- someone (probably 3 karts back) bumped, and with everyone already on their brakes at the end of that straight, it cascaded up to me
- I was already on my brakes, but still bumped chris, at just the right angle, and he went into the wall, I got stuck on him, and everyone piled up
I could see how from Tim's point of view the guys at the front of the train are at fault, they must have been going slower, even if that wasn't the case. Whatever, it happens, that wasn't that big a deal.
What really bummed me out was the LCQ:
- Randy got walled with 7 laps to go, so Tim stopped the race, lined us up, told us we were going to do a pace lap. He said we were going to do one lap, and then start racing.
- katie was in first, I was in second, we started a slow lap
- we did a lap, Tim made a hand gesture that was apparently a "1", but looked like he might be saying "go"
- katie sped up, I wasn't quite sure that's what he was signaling, but we'd definitely done more than one lap, and I didn't want to give her any more room than I needed to!
- I passed katie, but saw that everone else was still going slow, so I realized it was not in fact "on" yet, so I let katie pass me back.
- Tim gives the green flag (oh, *that's* the signal...) and black flags me.
That really bothered me, since I'd already realized my error, and gave katie the position back. No harm, no foul, but apparently that was worth booting me to the back of the line for.
I can accept simple mistakes and bad karts and stupid racing **** that happens, but twice this week I got screwed by (IMO) the judgement of a person, rather than bad luck or fate or whatever, and that's really frustrating. I was already pretty sore from saturday, and could barely drive my car by then end of sunday, and I felt like I was driving well, and all I got for my trouble was 5 points.
"Randy got Walled " doen't really do me justice,so I'm chimming in .
I was almost half a lap ahead of everyone ,and lapping the tail enders
passed one Ok, thanks Eric
passed 2 Ok ,then got used for brakes by him.
Just clarifying that I would have been in the final heat by winning the LCQ ,and I lost more points because of it.
But I'm over it and you should be too.Sometimes racing is luck,
and I believe Tim and the guys do try there best to make things workout.
We got 3 races left to make up for it.

So what good rib/chest protection vest should be made of? I see some cheap ones on ebay, but suspect those are crappy.

01-07-2008, 06:15 PM
Wasn't a rib issue, I think at the first event I must've taken a shot somewhere that jerked my back out of alignment, and since then the whole left side has been tight/sore. This weekend definitely didn't help, but I had the appt. before that.
I did notice that muscle was a lot more sore after sat though, I think all the left turns and no seatbelt translate into lots of work for that left back muscle. My arms hurt a bunch after yesterday, but feeling fine now.

I was behind Katie and Murph on the restart after Randy was consumed by the wall. When Tim sent us off he was holding up his index finger saying "one pace lap" which to me meant next time by we'd get the green flag. As we were going past him to what I thought would be the green flag he was still saying 1 more lap, Katie sped up slightly as we approached the light and Murph pulled out to pass her. He quickly realized his mistake since the green light didn't turn on and fell back into line. Next time around Tim put Murph to the back of the line because he jumped the start.
For what it's worth, and from my point of view, I think Tim did the right thing. The light/flag starts the race regardless of what Tim is saying or doing, it's that way in any sort of racing that I've spectated and participated in, oval racing, road racing, R/C cars or otherwise.
As far as the blue flag goes, I haven't have a problem with it. I was by far one of the slowest karts on the track in every race and when the leader was approaching me they would flag me, I'd point them by and that was that.

I don't really watch any racing, but why would you presume it works the way other racing works unless someone spells out the rules? This is not NASCAR, and I'm sure in NASCAR someone explained to the drivers very explicitly when the race actually starts. There were no rules about pace laps, Tim just said one pace lap, which we did.
You just think he did the right thing because there's no way you were gonna pass me (or get into the final race) without that! ;)

One other thing that you guys couldn't see was the feild was so spread out, there were carts just getting out to the straight away, before the "S" and I think Tim wanted the feild closer together. Just because you're given the 1 lap finger doesn't mean it'll happen if the feild isn't ready for the green flag.
My 2 cents... = )

- steven managed to pass katie, got a bit of distance
That was a hard pass to make. I kept getting the bump and could have plowed her out of the way like a lot of people use for passing maneuvers, but got by her fairly clean and didn’t cause her to lose more then one position in the process so it is probably my fault for making the train in the first place. From there it was off to the races and I didn’t have any one back on my tail until 5 laps to go and at that point I was holding my position and making someone earn the race.
In the end if you are an aggressive driver with people you shouldn't cry when they are aggressive back. I have tried really hard this season to not get carried away with things and just have fun.

Haha, I'll admit, it did help. :) I let the race come to me, would have been on your bumper patiently waiting to make a move, if no opportunity presented itself I would have settled for third.
So what are the sub rules exactly? Just one sub per week? Cause I forgot to ask about one yesterday, after the quattro club ice event got moved to 20th, and now Salah has asked for one too.

Seem to remember there being multiple subs in past years... an individual can't have the same sub multiple times.
Anyways, I'll be in the area on Sunday morning. Can sub for you if you need one. Won't hurt my feelings if you get someone else, as I haven't karted yet this season.

If I'm allowed to get a sub - sure, you can sub for me, offer your service to Salah though, he asked for a sub first :)

Looks like he found one... I'll be there in your place.
Oh... so apparently today isn't the 20th
Tim was kind enough to inform me of that when I showed up there at 11... Nice morning for a drive and a Perkins breakfast anyways, lol.

I can't believe I missed it last week!

And I showed figuring someone wouldn’t, that was you… Started DFL, picked up two spots… I had the fast lap and the best kart, #21, but everyone’s lap times were within 2 tenths, nothing I could do… Mid pack in LCQ… Sorry, but a couple points are better than 0 points…

How are the points working out for the series? Are we dropping one race, or can we allow subs on the final weekend? Katie and I are going to the Dixie National Tour on the 24th, so we'll miss the final weekend... :(

I'm not sure, but thought it was you get a sub for one week. I used mine up during the last event. I had tickets to see Elmo. What do the standings look like? Have funny at the Dixie tour.

Congratulations to everybody, and thank you all. I had a great time and really learned a lot throughout the league.
Here's the final results.

also attached is the .XLS version for those of you who want to play the "what if" game :D
Also it should be noted that today Nick's (screen name Zurno) sub was mistakenly awarded points when none of the other subs for today were. After speaking with the Gentleman who ran the league (can't remember his name off the top of my head), we determined that this was in fact a mistake and should be corrected. I removed the three points he was awarded in Rd1 of Wk6 which resulted in a tie between myself and Nick. I took the liberty of putting my name first though :p
