View Full Version : Dyno Day at LSE Performance
RedlineToy
06-25-2007, 10:17 AM
Talked to Aaron and the first day they have open for a group is July 28th. We would need 10 people to have a day for us and that would get everyone 3 pulls for $50 versus the normal $75. They can handle more then 10 people, that is just the minimum number.
I am happy to organize this so just let me know who would like to come to LSE on the 28th. They have reserved that date for us.
They have a grill we can use, would anyone be interested in some burgers for lunch. I will pick up the necessities if those eating can chip in a couple of bucks.

I would love to be involved to compare my new sentra to my old (dynoed at LSE last year)...but something tells me that my fiance wouldn't like me spending the saturday before our wedding gone all day for my car instead of helping her tie up loose ends and keeping her calm. Keep me in mind if another one gets set up, or if the date changes.

You'd better warn LSE that they'll need to put in a 3rd ramp on the dyno. Or a couple of burly chaps could just lift it on, I suppose.

I'll just drive it up (rear wheel off) and they can dyno it in reverse!
Wouldn't need to be too burly...

Hey Nate, cool #'s to know on the ol' S2. I did a Gtech on it before the air to water went in, was using water injection to cool the charge, and of 5 runs, tossing out the best and worst, and averaging the remaining 3, was 168 whp. I don't recall what Josh tosses out as the "fudge" factors to compair his dyno to others, but if it was 15% for the dyno, and 15% for driveline loss, you're making over 200 at the crank! Good to know the AFR is nice and lean too. Did you try any of the other chip settings? That might be interesting to know as well, how they may affect the HP/TQ/AFR. Maybe that will be the next dyno day...

I don't think LSE uses a fudge factor. There are so many other variables that any arbitrary index that raises the numbers only serves to massage the ego of the car owner.

Hey guys! Great time on Saturday--I was glad to hang out with everyone for the afternoon!
I had the red 1992 VW Corrado. It made 175.3 whp and 168 ft-lbs. I was feeling a little down until I saw what other people were making. I think the Dyno Dynamics is kind of a heartbreaker. If you want to see larger (and possibly erroneous) numbers, the Dynojet may be a better route. :D
My mods:
Bored to 3.0L and filled with JE pistons
ARP hardware
standard head rebuild with 3-angle valve job and new springs/seat/seals/keepers--no porting (yet)
mkIV VW metal headgasket (raised compression to 10.5:1)
high volume "Euro-clone" upper intake manifold port matched to the lower intake manifold (2-piece design)
ported exhaust manifolds (Jet-Hot coated)
big bore throttle body
Turn2 cold air intake
balanced OE injectors from RC Engineering (gave them 9 and used the best 6)
GIAC "cam chip"
Autotech 262 cams
Techtonics Tuning stainless steel high flow down pipe (Jet-Hot coated)
Techtonics Tuning high flow cat
Techtonics Tuning 2.5" stainless steel cat back with Borla muffler
Unorthodox Racing underdrive pulley set (crank/alternator/power steering)
Lightened stock flywheel (11lb)
Stock Sachs clutch
Peloquin LSD
Setrab oil cooler with t-stat sandwich plate
PCV catch can
poly motor and subframe mounts
I think that's about it...

Hey guys! Great time on Saturday--I was glad to hang out with everyone for the afternoon!
I had the red 1992 VW Corrado. It made 175.3 whp and 168 ft-lbs. I was feeling a little down until I saw what other people were making. I think the Dyno Dynamics is kind of a heartbreaker. If you want to see larger (and possibly erroneous) numbers, the Dynojet may be a better route. :D
My mods:
Bored to 3.0L and filled with JE pistons
ARP hardware
standard head rebuild with 3-angle valve job and new springs/seat/seals/keepers--no porting (yet)
mkIV VW metal headgasket (raised compression to 10.5:1)
high volume "Euro-clone" upper intake manifold port matched to the lower intake manifold (2-piece design)
ported exhaust manifolds (Jet-Hot coated)
big bore throttle body
Turn2 cold air intake
balanced OE injectors from RC Engineering (gave them 9 and used the best 6)
GIAC "cam chip"
Autotech 262 cams
Techtonics Tuning stainless steel high flow down pipe (Jet-Hot coated)
Techtonics Tuning high flow cat
Techtonics Tuning 2.5" stainless steel cat back with Borla muffler
Unorthodox Racing underdrive pulley set (crank/alternator/power steering)
Lightened stock flywheel (11lb)
Stock Sachs clutch
Peloquin LSD
Setrab oil cooler with t-stat sandwich plate
PCV catch can
poly motor and subframe mounts
I think that's about it...

Since i have a awd car an work with those most dyno readings are taken on Dyno Dynamics, mustangs or dynojets so i see more cars to compare them to. Those numbers are VERY respectable for a corrado however.
you want higher numbers go over to RS motors and use their mustang. I regularly have read ~15% difference between the two dynos for AWD.

I hear ya. I am pretty happy with the results considering the dyno and what other people are making. It would just be nice to be able to compare apples-to-apples with other people. I guess that's the only setback with Dyno Dymanics dyno. But for tuning, I don't see a better alternative anywhere!

This is what I ment about a "fudge factor", just the difference between the way the different dynos calculate the HP based on the run they have been given.

its a pretty standard conversion used by people to compare the dyno at LSE vs the RS one etc. I found that it was almost exact on the car that I had dyno'd at both shops.
no idea if there is a difference between AWD and 2WD in the conversion however. its mostly used for comparison purposes across a single model type of car though, 2WD usually puts more power down overall due to less differential and driveline loss, therefore the crank HP can read as lower on a dyno on a 4wd vehicle because it does not account for the losses due to driveline.

Though I am designer, I have to work with my fellow en-gin-eers, or as we call them behind their backs, "Box Makers," I would say Dyno them at several shops and take the average and there is hopefully no outliers on the bell curve. I have a friend who's instructor in college was the designer at ford and designed the GT40. That dude was all about what looks good, a car with style, but deep roots. Designers make cars look fast, because you can't actually see it moving in a sketch. karman gia, 914, opel GT, Pauls killer bug eyed killer, That's what makes a car fast. It just looks that way standing still. Yeah! give it up for spinners!! Created by a MN designer at MCAD as senior school project. That's qualitative.
Hey Nate I don't think we should feel proud that spinners originated in MN

Thanks for coming out everyone.
Like it has been stated we will not use a multiplier in an attempt to give a "compariable" number. Different dyno's read differently, the importance is to use it for tuning and comparisons while using the same chassis dyno. That way you can all see how you stack up compared to each other.
there is a SIZE joke in there somewhere?
