View Full Version : Another Austin Healey hillclimb
Well the Minnesota Austin Healey club wants to do another hillclimb. So here is the note I received from Tom Hazen, the President of MN A.H. club.
It's going to be a busy 'rest of the season'
Dwight
Hey Dwight,
That's great news about the pylons. Thanks so much. For the second
hillclimb on Sept. 13th, we will be using the entire parking area from last
time for an autocross course, and probably adding a chicane or two up the
hill, so I'm sure we could use as many of the little orange fellas as you
can comfortably bring. Basically, the more cones we use, the better the
course will be marked, and the safer it will be. We could easily put 100
pylons to good use, but again, just as many as you can comfortably bring
would be great. We will be making several safety improvements, such as the
use of water-filled jersey barriers, moving the finish line down to before
that last turn, and adding chicanes. But the trees will still be there, so
the course remains much more dangerous than your typical autocross parking
lot.
Looks like registration rates will be as follows: Advance registration: $10
for Healey Club members, $15 for all others. Day of show: $15 for Healeys,
$25 for others. Your kindness with the plyons will allow MAC paid members
to enjoy Healey Club rates. You can put the word out, and I will honor it.
One favor though, please caution your members that we will still be cracking
down hard on safety violators. The focus of the day is good clean fun and
socializing, NOT hard charging autocross. The course is just too dangerous
for that!
Regards,
Tom

For those of us who weren't at the first one, how 'bout some more specific details (exactly when, where, etc...), or where to get them.
Thanks!!

Damn! I want to go to these, but they keep getting scheduled on top of other events! Oh well, the Swift wouldn't look too good with a tree as a hood ornament anyway. :)

Patrick,
You mean "The tree wouldn't look too good with the Swift as another branch"

Okay Guys,
Here's the lowdown for Healey Hillclimb II on Sept. 13 (rain date Sept 14). As a token of my appreciation to Dwight for agreeing to share cones, MAC members can register at Healey Club rates, which means $10 for pre-registration before Sept 10th.
Couple things to remember: First, in order to maintain a managable number of cars and a vintage character for the event, I'm limiting it to 60 cars total, only 20 of which can be 1980 or newer. I'm president of the Austin-Healey Club this year, and our culture is different than the MAC. So, the first 20 checks I receive from non-vintage car owners will be the only newer cars that get to run. Fair enough?
Second, I know you've all heard it before, but I need to stress the safety factor again. Our inexpensive club insurance, the ability to come back to Afton next year, and my little white butt are all on the line here, so please ease up and stay in control of your car. The good folks at Afton Alps have made it abundantly clear that if they see anybody go off course, lose control, or hit a guardrail, they will not allow us back again...ever. We had one incident during the July 12 event, and it was only by sheer luck that Mr. Afton Alps wasn't watching at that time. So remember, THIS IS NOT A MAC AUTOCROSS EVENT! You do not have carte blanche to kill cones. You will be immediately black flagged for the day if you lose control. We are making several changes to make the course safer and slower, but the ultimate responsibility still rests with each driver. You are welcome to attend, but please come with the attitude of staying safe and having a fun run up the hill. No times will be revealed until all runs are done (I don't know they leaked out last time), so forget about FTD and just enjoy the day.
Okay, I'm off my soapbox now. Here's the text of the flier:
