*** MODERN CAR REGISTRATION SOLD OUT ***
********************************************
I still have room for vintage (1979 or older) cars, but as of Friday night, June 8th, the modern car spots are filled for the "Amery II" event on June 23rd, sorry.
You can register for "Amery III" to be held on August 25th. Phil Ethier is already signed up for that one!
************************************************** ***********
You are cordially invited to the
Second Annual Amery Airport Autocross and Straight-Away Speed Run
Saturday, June 23, 2007 (rain date Sunday, June 24)
Registration opens at 8:00am, closes at 10:00am
MANDATORY DRIVERS MEETING 10:00am
If you are not present and registered by 10:00am, you will NOT drive the course!
Turn quickly through the orange cones of the autocross, then straighten 'er out for the 1/2 mile taxiway top speed run. Our state-of-the-art and precisely calibrated stopwatch/walkie-talkie system will measure your time on the course, and a radar gun will capture your top speed.
Drivers must be 18+, sign waiver, pass on-site tech inspection, wear helmet (Bring a Snell 85 or newer - we'll have some loaners)
The course is entirely paved. Drivers will run in the order their paid registrations are received. We will try to give everyone four runs, more if time permits.
CORNER WORKERS NEEDED! Want to get close to the action but not drive? Like to wave flags and blow whistles? Free treats and free lunch provided to all volunteers. Space is limited, so call Tom now to reserve your coveted place among the cones.
Directions: The simple route is 94 East into Wisconsin, take the Baldwin Hwy 63 exit, turn left heading north on Hwy 63 which eventually becomes Hwy 46. The airport is on your left before you get to Amery. For a more scenic drive, from the northeast corner of 694, take Hwy 36 East into downtown Stillwater, turn right and take the old drawbridge over the St. Croix into Wisconsin, following Hwy 64 East. Stay on 64 past Somerset and through New Richmond, then turn left onto Hwy 46 North.
BRING THE KIDS! Helmeted passengers 16+ will be allowed on all runs.
Breakfast and lunch will again be served by the highly acclaimed Girl Scout Troop of Amery.
Important Legal Notice: Despite all precautions taken, this event remains dangerous and may result in property damage, serious injury, or death. Drivers, spectators, and workers enter at their own risk.
Advance registration (deadline June 22) $30 per driver. $15 for Austin-Healey Club members. Make check payable to the Minnesota Austin-Healey Club and mail to Tom Hazen, 130 East 18th Street #202, Mpls, MN 55403. Or pay via PayPal adding $1 service charge to myliberty@comcast.net. Day of event registration will cost $10 more. Sorry, no refunds.

By the way, according to maps.google.com and the ruler I used on my computer screen, the Amery Airport taxiway that we will be using is about 2800 feet long, or just over 1/2 mile, when the "ramp" or plane parking area is included. After the autocross section of the course that Paul will design, we will have a straight-away acceleration section of about 1600 feet with the rest reserved for braking and cool down. If you know what your car will do in a 1/4 mile which is 1320 feet, the extra 300 feet or so should add some fun.
Last year Paul did a great job of setting up a course that really rewarded drivers on the straight-away when they took the last turn correctly. I'm sure he will have something similarly ingenious this year.
I instruct at high performance driving schools at full speed road racing tracks, and we all know that the turn just before the longest straight is the most important one on the track!
We won't be using the main runway because it needs to stay open for plane traffic. In fact, I have two friends that will probably fly in during the day. Check out the flier on page 8 of the link above to see one of them!

I'm blushing...
Just a heads up that the AX part will be a little more open this time around and a bit shorter as well as the goal is to focus on the high speed part more and to have time to allow more runs as well. I believe that we will only time the AX section this year plus the radar gun readout for the top end speed portion.
I'm looking for 3-4 MAC'ers to volunteer and come early to help set up the course, same as last year - the ones that help will also run the course a couple times during setup while I observe to refine the course. Please post here if interested...

I'd be happy to show up early for setup!

This sounds really fun. Are there any special safety precautions we should be taking for higher speeds? Tire pressures, good night sleep, etc.

Doubt your Me-Ta-Ta will get going too fast in a 1/4 mile + 300 feet, however there are a few night before items you might try:
Ankle extension exercises (to push accelerator harder and faster). The more weight you use the faster you'll go the next day!
Visualization exercises (imagine yourself with the certificate stating that you were the fastest driver of the day)
A good nights sleep without the hot toddy to drift off.
Hope this helps!
Paul
PS. Showing up early to set up wouldn't hurt either.

I would like to stay under 60 cars total with at least half older than 1980, so I will probably cap modern car registration at 30. We are a vintage club, after all.
I also have it on good authority that a certain Lamborghini Murcielago will be joining us for the fun at Amery. Just a little more eye candy for ya.

Let me be clear that REGISTERED = PAID. I have to receive your PayPal or your check. Words mean nothing to me, sorry. I am confirming everyone's registration via email. If you think you're registered but you haven't received an email from me, you're probably not registered yet.
When modern car registration is full, I will post the news. But all is not lost. Amery III will happen on August 25th!

Just sign up for the August 25th event. You'll be fine.
My 1980 cut-off has been in place for several years. Once Reagan got elected, something intangible changed in the auto industry. 1979 was the last year for the MG Midget, MGB, and other cool vintage cars.
But yes, you should get an older Vette. Everybody knows early 70s Vettes are WAY cooler than the 80s models. :)

I had never considered the effect of Reagan on the British auto industry. Generally speaking a US President has little effect until years into their term. That said, the election of Reagan did have an effect on the Iran Hostage Crisis, so one must consider the possibility. If it were me speculating then I'd have to give due consideration to the usury rates under Carter (Jimmy Carter killed my small business in 1980). My knowledge is limited to the US though, and I'll have to do some digging to see what was going on in the UK.
Back on point - if Reagan is the cut off, then I submit that he took office in January 1981, and therefore 1980 model year cars should be allowed as a "cool vintage car". Or if we look at the election then cars made prior to November 1980 would be allowed, meaning the cut off would be the 1981 model year.
Argument #2 - the Corvette had the same chassis from 1963 to 1982, and therefore under the skin they all have very similar capabilities. The older cars have a slight weight advantage due to not having steel I-beams in the doors and no bumpers to speak of. Therefore since Corvette's made 1963 through 1982 have a chassis designed in the late '50's they should be considered "vintage". Maybe more archaic.
Argument #3 - Since my car was made in late 1979 as a 1980 model year vehicle, then I submit it is within the cut off for cool vintage vehicles.
As for older 'Vettes being more cool - it's all in the eye of the beholder. For me its 1963-1973 are cool, 1974-1979 not so much, then 1980-1982 back to cool. That droop tail look just leaves me uninspired.

Your arguments, though erudite, have failed to convince me to change the policy, sorry. The Minnesota Austin-Healey Club is a vintage car club with vintage car insurance. Our events need to maintain a vintage flavor to qualify for that insurance. I get enough grief from the old guard for letting in anything other than Austin-Healeys, let alone other British sports cars from the 50s and 60s, let alone other vintage European vehicles, let alone modern European cars, let alone modern Japanese and American rides, let alone modern racing go-karts! The modern/vintage line is arbitrary, of course, but it had to be drawn somewhere, so I have hereby decreed that the 70s and earlier are vintage, the 80s and newer are modern. Now if I change that for you by one year, someone else will ask for a two year exception, then five, then pretty soon the insurance company will cancel our policy because we're not running vintage events any more. I can't take that risk. They are happy with the current rules and so am I. Sorry you're not.
Also, registration for this event has been open for several weeks, and info about it has been posted on this forum for several days. 30 other modern car owners managed to register before their class sold out. Sorry you didn't make it in time.
I encourage you to register for the Aug 25th Amery Airport event before that one sells out. Still lots of space for modern cars there. Same deal.
Feel free to show up at the airport on June 23rd (rain date June 24th) to spectate, pick cones, catch rides, and eat great Girl Scout food! If (and it's a big "if") on the day of the event I don't get enough vintage cars to fill the 60-car roster, I will re-open registration for modern cars on a first-come-first-served basis.

Reminds of the hassle MSRA had with the Back to the 50s. Event is for 1964 and earlier model-year cars. People were constantly bringing in Mustangs claiming they were 1964-1/2 cars. Solution is simple. New literature says:
No scooters.
No bicycles.
No skates.
No lawn-chair parking.
No burnouts.
No flame-thowing.
No pets.
ABSOLUTELY NO MUSTANGS.
Sue and I are happy that 1962 Triumph TR4 cars are IN. Ours is the white one, not the blue one.

Just a quick note to say that I still have PLENTY of room for VINTAGE (70s or older) car registrations.
Modern car guys who weren't able to register before the sell out: Keep watching this thread for cancellations. My "no refund" policy means anyone who needs to cancel will want to sell their spot to someone else.
There's also a possibility that on the day of the event I still won't have enough vintage cars registered, and will therefore re-open modern car registration on a first come first served basis (no waiting list) in order to fill the roster. Can't say for sure how likely that is at this point. It depends on how many of the vintage car guys decide to show up on the morning of the event. They could fill the roster, or they could leave me with 15 open spots.
If you know for sure that you can make the Aug 25th event, I would highly recommend registering for that right away. Several modern car owners have already put down money for August. Don't delay, and don't whine when August modern car registration sells out before you get in. You have been warned!
Good luck!

Do you mean "in Daisy Dukes" in the biblical sense? In that case, no. It would distract the drivers too much.
Seriously though, I need hot girls (don't we all?) The flag girl's job is actually quite important, more than cosmetic. Upon receiving my secret signal, she will wave the green flag that starts a car, once every 40 seconds or so. I've put the word out to my sistas in the Minnesota RollerGirls, but you know how fickle they can be.

I don't have an exact address, but if you input "Airport Road, Amery, WI" you should find it. The airport is located just south of town on the west side of Hwy 46. If you're coming up Hwy 46 from the south it's a left turn. If you get into Amery proper, you went too far. The directions I emailed to all drivers are very specific. I don't trust mapquest any more. It has led me astray too many times.

I think 94 east to 63 N (Baldwin exit) to 46N (road stays straight as 46, goes east to Clear Lake as 63) is more direct than going across on 8 and down on 46, less time off the interstate too. The airport is just south of town on the west side of the road

Call that good looking chick from the show setup and bring her out there.I'll be so distracted I doubt I'll find or care about the course.(hehe)

Just print that out and tape it up strategically on your windscreen, and you won't care who it is actually waving the flag.
I was going to put Pat's head on the picture, but decided he'd already suffered enough recently at the hands of The Powells.
And, yes, I'm quite sure the picture won't stay up for long. Just whine and complain enough, and I'll edit the post to delete it. Let's just at least leave it up long enough for Rick to see it.
Stuart.
