I recently bought a Miata battery comparable to this one Westco (http://www.westcobattery.com/miata.html), only to find out 5 days later that Optima is making a 51R battery that I can use.
I bought the Miata battery because I wanted a sealed battery that would fit my battery tray (sized for a 51R battery). The Miata battery is physically smaller than a 51R, so it fits.
If there are any Miata owners out there who are thinking about replacing their Miata's battery, maybe we can help each other out. I haven't even put this battery in the car yet.

Uhhhh, Jim. Is this the special Miata battery that lasts, well just about forever?
My wifes '94 Miata 's battery is original, and I would like to have one on hand.
How much?

I'd say it's a comparable replacement.
The original is a Panasonic Battery that uses the same technology, Absorption Glass Mat (AGM).
Here's a write-up (http://www.sandiegomiataclub.org/SDMC/Garage/Battery.html) about Miata batteries, if you want to know more.
I bought this one because I wanted a narrower battery than I had, but it had to be spill-proof.
Then I found out that I could get a longer, same width, higher CCA, spill-proof battery in the Optima 51R, so I want to sell the Miata battery and switch to the Optima.
I don't think the Optima will fit in a Miata, but you might want to check. :)
I paid $69 plus tax, so I think $50 is pretty fair.
It's a brand new battery after all.

Another big advantage to the Miata battery is weight. How much does this new 51R battery weigh? I think my Miata battery is at about 14lbs, maybe 18; I don't remember.

The battery has been sold.
