Info below. For those of you that have not done this before there are several caveats:

This is a Vintage event, different culture and emphasis.
This event is NOT ran at 100%, more like 70% - if you are
expecting more that that this is NOT the event for you. If you can't agree to that don't register. That said it is a fun day with some neat cars to see. Hazards include big trees, ravines and an inside hill --- you are expected to drive well within you/your cars limits. No times are posted during the event, after the event is over ALL participants get a certificate with their fastest time.

Not only is it ran at 70%, any wheel off on the hillclimp part of the run is an immediate end of your day. If you hit a cone in the hillclimb portion you are on Double Secret Probation***, if you hit another you are then done for the day.
These rules are due to the site and it's dangers, however you can still have a good time out there at the lower speeds.
***Not so secret as I found out at the first hillclimb.

Corner workers can get some awesome shots, just a bonus for volunteering (hint, hint, hint)

Just as an FYI The Austin Healey Club is also planning on TWO Airport Speed runs at Amery this summer.

Healey Hillclimb VI

Saturday, June 2, 2007

that rises 250 feet in just over 1/3 mile.

Drivers will run in the order their paid registrations are
received. We will try to give everyone four runs, more if
time permits. From 12:30 to 1:30 we will take a break to enjoy
the optional barbeque buffet luncheon served in the ski chalet
($10 cash or check, pay at the buffet).

8am to 5pm will receive a free buffet lunch! Space is limited,
so call Tom now to reserve your coveted place among the cones.

Phil,

How do you know?

Paul

I put a wee bit of a front tire off the lot once. Wound up only 3rd overall. Hmmph.

Seriously, it's a good rule. I didn't complain, just picked up my camera for the rest of the day.

It is a good rule.

I have a friend who put their Sentra SE-R spec V over the edge there (not at a hillclimb). The car didn't live.

I'm still looking for several all-day volunteers for the hillclimb. As a volunteer you get VERY close to the action. You get to wave flags, blow whistles, and talk on the radio! Woo hoo! You will also receive free refreshments and free BBQ lunch. Please call me at 612-237-1883 if you are interested.

Thanks!

The funny part is that I didn't do it in any of those dangerous places. It was on the level parking lot not near a ditch or spectators. I started into a carrousel and the LSD in the Lotus worked its evil spell. The car went straight. The right-front went off the edge of the lot as the car came to a stop.

I've always been really careful on the hill. I really would not like to go off the road at 70 in a Europa.

Does anyone have any info on these events? I've heard this is an AX that spills out on to the runway forming a ~1/2-mile finishing straight. More info please!

These threads from last years event, as that was the first event there will be a several changes this year:

The airport has requested that we "shut down" sooner, giving more room for run off (Vipers & Ford GT40 were ~ 130 MPH at max)

I will design the AX course a little "looser" both in layout and course length.

Elapsed Time will be for AX section only as you have the radar gun readout to know the top speed

2007 Airport Event planning won't be finalized until after the Hillclimb is over, one thing at a time...

It's a taxiway, and its not a half mile. The taxiway was that long when we did it at Grand Rapids and I easily got the TR4 to 100mph. At Amery I only got the Miata to 87 MPH. I surely would have been faster than that in the Miata at Grand Rapids. Fastest radar speed at last year's Amery event was a Ford GT at 128.

Unfortunately, at this year's Rendezous, the Jaguar club couldn't get the airport, so the autocross will be at the Grand Rapid high school instead.

They want more pre-1980 cars for the Hillclimb and the airport events. Yes, Mike, they will take your replica Cobra.

You folks with the newer cars might want to be workers for the day. Yes, there is a free all-you-can-eat lunch for you if you commit to stay all day. Entrants have to pay for lunch. Call Tom at 612-237-1883.

The Hillclimb is June 2, and preregistration is required for driving, so don't dawdle.

Thanks for the plug, Phil! Yes, modern car registration is almost sold out, and I still need four corner workers who can commit to help from 8:00am to 5:30pm. As Phil said, workers get free refreshments all day and free lunch. You also get VERY close to the action and my everlasting gratitude!

Quick question.

Let me know if it is not allowed on this forum. I have done this in the past with the MNSubaru group and it was very helpful.

We were recently approached for a new business pitch that involves "automotive enthusiasts" and understanding the online community, would it be kosher for people from my work (two of them) to chat with you guys during downtime? By chat it would be less than five minutes and would be simple stuff like, "where do you buy car parts," "how long have you been involved with cars," etc. Very baseline stuff.

If it's not appropriate let me know. I completely understand.

Like I said, we did this before with MNSubaru, approximately 50 some members who we met in a Firestone parking lot at 10pm on a Friday night.

Looking forward to the drive on Saturday!

At 45mph TOP speed it takes too long to get anywhere. (It took me three long days driving it back from Vermont.)

How were your kidneys after that trip?

How did that trip compare to the Michigan "drop off the Marcos and watch Paul puke" trip?

The M-37 has a compliant suspension (which is partly why it does so well off road) so there were no issues there. It was a fun trip driving across Canada and at 45mph; you really get to see the great scenery. Sometimes driving s l o w reaps great rewards. The conversation was better on the Michigan Marcos trip though. Paul puking has other rewards.
