That's not a bigger diameter pipe then? Would the difference from a stock setup just be in the muffler? Any idea what type of hp gain?

I'm really not too familiar with the non-M cars but here is what I know (or think I know!). The 96+ M3 exhaust is a larger diameter pipe, the 95 is the same size as yours. Regardless, they all are the same size at the joint, the 96+ pipes step down at that point. Therefore you can run any year E36 M3 muffler and pipes on any year E36 non-M 6 cylinder car. The difference between yours and an M muffler is the M has a heat shield attached to the pipes just in front of the muffler, the M muffler is less restrictive, it has dual polished tips, and the system is stainless. The M setup does weigh a few pounds more. Most of the comments I've read regarding this upgrade claim around 5 hp and if it matters, much better sound. It seems to be a pretty popular upgrade based on demand.

If yours is a fer-der (4door), double check to make sure this will fit. I know the m3 sedans are thinner than the coupes, but overall length I think is real close. Just make sure the pipe routing is the same.
It won't turn your 328 into an m3, but it'll make it sound like one. It's hard to find an exhuast that 'helps' an m3 as the factory did a great job designing the stock system, so this makes a great upgrade to the non M cars. I have a friend who did this to her 93 325is and she noted the exhuast note and commented on a perceived increase in power.
