I may run my wife's RX-8 in an event or two this year and was wondering what class it would fall into. It is completely bone stock with the exception of a Mazdaspeed strut tower brace replacing the factory one. Would the car still be in BS or does it get bumped?

The strut tower brace bumps it to ST, its not allowed in stock as it is a dealer installed option.

Its pretty dang easy to remove though, so you might want to consider taking it off and running stock. It's not exactly a part that is doing a lot to make the car faster anyways.

edit: wasnt sure what ST class

Technically, the replacement strut brace bumps it out of stock. I'm not sure which class it bumps to - I don't think the RX8 can run in any ST classes... STU maybe? I imagine it's probably an ASP car if you have to run SP.

If the strut brace is an easy swap, I'd just change it back to the stock one the night before the autocross and run it that way. Or just run it in BS and ask your competitors for forgiveness ;)

Edit - Zak, RX8's aren't allowed in STS or STX. I'm not sure about STU...

Michael,

The car would be legal for STU with the aftermarket strut tower brace and street tires. The PAX multiplier is actually slightly lower for STU, versus B Stock - so you might as well just run it there.

Now, if you can just convince the wife that coilovers, a big front bar and Azenis will make the car a better daily driver. ;)

Switch that bar and come play in BS. I would be good to have another 8 in the class. Although this will probably make me 3rd out of 3 in most events! :-)

Since it's you wife's car, I doubt she will let you mess with it much ;) Therefore your best bet is to remove the optional strut brace and run it in the Street Tire Index class. During registration, Select BS as your class and simultaneously select the "Street Tire" option.

You will face less competition in the Street Tire class than you will in BS, where your competitors will be driving on race tires.

Thanks. I needed a good laugh. I have tears in my eyes from laughing. You want competition? Come to the T class, and Salah will shred you!

Still, he's correct. BST is probably the wisest choice for a competive class. Come and join us. We have a lot of fun.

I'm not so sure about that. I don't know about Scott, but I think Mus and Andy are running on street tires.

Salah you crack me up.....

In the first three events of 2006, you beat the top B Stock finisher by 5, 4 and 2 seconds - on Index (which means the actual time gap was even larger). ;)

Salah, when are you going to get some extra rims and 710's and start going REALLY fast?

Salah was impressed with the grip when he drove Adam A's sticky-shod Miata in fun runs. His solo times were quite a bit quicker than his street-tire ride and comparable with the fastest times from the day's competition.

I rode along on his last Miata trip. When you ride with a master, the speed seems natural and serene. I am reminded of riding with Todd Freeman.

My quickest run in Adam's Miata during fun runs was a 32.9xx but with a silly cone (as in one that didn't save me any time but i hit it anyway ;) ). With Phil in the car I ran a 33.3xx but I lost a chunk of time in the left hand sweeper immediately following the u-turn at the midway point of the course. In an attempt to finally find the Miata's cornering limit, I came in too hot and totally blew the exit with terminal understeer.

Anyway, I hardly have any experience with RWD cars under non-street conditions and I don't think i made full use of the available grip in Adam's Miata, except for the corner that i blew.

I have to say Adam's Miata is really fun to drive and quite easy to drive as well.

Having driven the Evo RS, Evo MR, Evo Base, and the STi, I can confidently say that the RS is the most fun-to-drive.

I think my Evo was fully capable of turning in mid-33s if i had not made serious mistakes in each and every run that day. I just dont think i drove at the level i am capable of. Also, the course's nice flowing nature while making the course fun, does not allow the Evo to make use of it's explosive corner exit speed. In MOWOGs 1 & 2, which had a few more point & shoot elements, I was able to give the top Miatas of Adam and Randy a run for their money, but at MOWOG 3, the same Miatas were MUCH faster.

BTW, I was EXTREMELY impressed with Andy's second place finish in a Mazda3, which i believe had OEM all-season tires.

You're right Salah,
there were no real hard acceleration spots on the course
hence the "great Miata" course was born

You are correct about the tires, and Thank You very much for the compliment!!

Yep. Kumo ECSTA on mine, but definitely not R compound. I'm not sure mus Mus is running now but he was on stock tires with the BMW and I don't think he changed them on the Porsche.

Yes, Salah, your RS is tons of fun to drive. I loved the no ABS (no ice mode on wheel lift) and fantastic steering response. The power wasn't bad either!!!
I'd like to try an STi out...I've only ridden in these.

I ran a clean 33.9 in Salah's car with STU Todd dude on board. That was perhaps my best run of the day. The car was on the fun meter up there with the NB Miatas and Steve's BSP M3. The only downside was a bit of power-on understeer which could probably be dialed out with some tire pressure adjustments.

We may have to talk Salah into running my Miata at one of the Mowogs this year to further spice up CS.
