I have decided to run in SM for the rest of the year. As much fun as it is to compare times to an open wheel car running R compounds that weighs less than a ton, I miss competing in a class.
I have a replacement bumper beam in the front of my car. It allows the mounting of a front mount intercooler in the first model WRX cars. Back when the first model WRX was introduced in japan it had an EJ20G motor and an air to water intercooler. the AWIC is old and tricky to keep working well/safey on the car and it was replaced with a front mount. None of the typical subaru top mounts adapt to the throttle body of the EJ20G engine. There is an old STi one that does, but its about half the size of hte intercooler on a modern WRX and is seldom used now and expensive for what it is. ARC also makes one that costs $2000 and must be ordered specially from japan... Most EJ20G WRX's have front mounts now because of this.
So the deal is at valleyfair most of the SM drivers at some point came up to me and asked why i wasnt running my car in SM. I explained why, and none seemed to think it was much of a big deal. So I decided to register for SM at central parking.
My car has a lot of mods on it but is far from a fully prepped SM car. I run it on street tires, it has outdated cylinder heads and a exhaust manifold that steals a ton of power but keeps it quiet enough for me to live with when I drive it on the street. It's leaving a lot of change on the table in terms of prep, and I plan to over time build it up more. I spent most of this winter prepping it just to be driveable and safe, and plan on spending a lot omre time money and effort on it to make it into a good SM car, including adding an SM legal front bumper
I hate to mention this, but this is exactly the kind of thing I could have just kept my mouth shut about and just entered it into SM, but I beleive that we all must follow the rules and be honest if we are to be respected. I'd rather just let people know about it and let the other competitors decide. So that's why I'm making this post. If anyone in SM wants to challenge my car, feel free but please consider what i've written first. i don't want to steal any trophies from anyone or anything, I just want to be able to compete in a class with some of my friends, who feel the same way I do about this.
