Here is the info for the Hillclimb, 60 cars total with a maximum of 20 non-classic cars (a rusted out Civic is not a classic). This is a 70% event as in anyone entering must agree to drive well within their and their cars limits. It is NOT the place to go 100%!!! There are big trees, a hill on one side and a ravine on the other and the guardrail does not go the full length of the course. If you can't agree to that don't register. That said it is a fun day with a small autocross on the flat then the hillclimb. I don't want to post the contact info on this site, PM me and I will send it to you.
I hope to see some of you there!

I did this event last year, and thought it was a lot of fun. The autocross section was uber-tight, and the hill was WAY too steep for my little Cooper, but it was still a blast.
Definately one event to take it easy on, though! Ask Steven Beutow about the deer! Yikes.
But you get to see some sweet old cars, and you're fed a lunch. Not too shabby!

I recommend this, there will be snacks at each workers station & a free lunch!
Not to mention the display of old race cars this year.
Remember it's not a race, there was a Citroen 2CV last year, torque or not I think you'd beat that car...

Andy, who also has a white Miata for his daily driver. He was not last. There was a new driver in a misfiring MGA there, saving Andy from DFL. There is on my Flickr site a pic of Andy in action in the Citroen at the Healey Gymkhana.
I won't be up near at the top of the hillclimb list like I was with the Lotus, but I won't be near the bottom like the time I drove the eventmaster's Sprite.
The important thing to understand is that this is not a competition in the regular sense. Times are not posted during the day. The timing is done by radio and stopwatch. One car at a time, so the event moves at a *very* slow pace. This is the relaxed side of motorsports, so there will be no attempts made to make it move faster. You need to readjust your head from the 20-second starts you see at MAC events.
At the end of the day Tom hands out the FTD certificates (everybody gets one) in order from the most "contemplative" (and don't make fun of these guys in their pretty old cars; they are having a blast) to the most "impatient" (Salah and Lee have gotten the latter). If you put one wheel off the pavement, (even in the autocross section; ask me how I know), you get to sit out the rest of the event.
The bottom line is that this is an event for classic-car folks. If you want to get into the ambiance of this culture, you will have a really fun day. If you are looking for a place to drive ten-tenths in pursuit of a trophy, there's probably an autocross scheduled elsewhere.

I can't speak for the Austin-Healey club or for Tom, but it has appeared pretty relaxed in the past. There is only one car afoot at a time, so a spotter is superfluous. With the launch times of more than one minute, you don't exactly have to run to pick up the cone.

My usual rants about numbers don't apply at the Austin-Healey events. With launch intervals this large (the guys at the top of the hill literally write down the time for the car before authorizing the next launch), numbers are generally small paper ones that Tom supplies for you to affix to a headlight or the like. So don't panic that you can't get your Met Council number.
The snail-like pace of the event creates a relaxing atmosphere that just couldn't exist at a MAC event. The only anal-retentive thing I have noticed at their events is their national club's insistence that you have an insulator over the hot terminal of your battery. Duct tape is acceptable.

Comments from Tom H. (runs the hillclimb).
Corner workers can take all the photos/videos they want, as long as at least
one person at each station can still operate the walkie-talkie and have the
red flag ready to wave.
And if they're willing to share, I would be delighted to get copies of
really good pics/vids to use in a marketing presentation for future
hillclimbs.
Paul
Please PM me if interested in working & I will forward the contact info.
Or is it, first myself?

For those that volunteered to work day of event AND the MAC'ers that are driving:
I am in charge of the AX section & would appreciate any/all your help earlier in the day, maybe starting around 7:00 or so, I'll post closer to the event once I know more.
I will be scoping out the site (and the airport site as well) on the 11th with Tom Hazen, the lead organizer. Help will also be appreciated at the airport event as well.

I'm very supprised I haven't heard of this already being I live 20-25 min away. I will be registering for that event and I guess I can help out any way I can also.
This may be a shamefull plug but if your in need of portable toilets for the Amery event. My Family owns Raska Sewer Service and can take care of all your needs in that area PM me if interested.

Jason,
You should have no trouble getting the registration in on time, it will depend more on how many "non-classics" there are so far as 40 of the 60 spots are reserved for classic cars. I don't know how many "new" cars are registered... BTW, how did you get the reg info? I'm trying to keep track of MAC'ers as their cars are faster & they are used to going harder than we want at the hillclimb --- that way I can pre-screen as it were... Regarding the airport, it's the first time so there was nothing to hear before, as for the honey wagon, there is no such thing as a shameless plug among motorheads, that said I don't think it'll be needed but I'll ask.

While on vacation this weekend I haven't been able to get online. So this morning a coworker of mine told me about the two events being there close to home for me. I believe he just found out today or yesterday on his VW forum. The hill climb just sounds like a good time so we thought we'd check it out. As far as going to fast I don't think that will be a problem going up the hill I'll probably be to scared to push the car to fast anyway. Being I heard the ditches are pretty steep anyway. Its all for fun and not to wreck are cars!

it was not as bad as i thought it would be, for falling almost 100 yards down. He got lucky as hell though, because he "pinballed" down rather than hitting a tree head on. It took 2 trucks to get it back up from the bottom, would have been easier if we could have cut down some trees, but high speeds and bald tires don't mix on damp pavement.

I don't think this friend has yet grasped the concept of cause and effect. That was the second of three cars he totaled in about 1 year. The third put him in an (induced) coma at regions for 28 days, followed by about as long in the ICU. Now at 22, he's got more health problems that most 70 year olds I know.

Several of you asked about working the day of the event (and if you could take pix --- answer is yes) and were given contact info but only one MAC member has contacted Tom so far...
If you can work/are planning on working please contact Tom (PM me again for contact info if needed) as soon as possible, he is still short of workers.
Remember, you can take pix & you get a free lunch as well.
Is anyone else is interested in working (Sat July 8th, rain day Sun July 9th)?

FYI:
All hillclimb participants should have received an informational email from Tom Hazen yesterday (Monday 5/19/06). If anyone didn't please PM me your email address and I'll forward it to you.
Setup:
The setup starts at 5:00 AM
Tom and I will be there putting up the cones and testing the course before the registrants start arriving (7-8:30) . It's way early (yawn) but if we could get 1-2 MAC workers or entrants who live closer to Afton here by about 5:30 to help that would be great. The rest between 6:30 and 7:00 should be fine.
Please post here what works for you.
NUMBERS:
The email stated 12" numbers!!! After talking to Tom I was able to get that reduced to SCCA spec (8" numbers), those of us lucky enough to be using our MAC numbers can now use them.
Add'l entries:
As for anyone else interested in running:
Pre-registration is officially closed to non-classic cars as the original cutoff of 20 cars has been reached. The definition of a classic is loose, just has to be pre 1980...
There may be day of event openings however as we are at 45 entrants out of the 60 limit. We will accept current cars day of event if there is room, however classics will have preference day of event.
I will post the number of openings available a couple days before the event.
For anyone interested in stopping by to watch, for a bit or all day:
The drivers meeting is at 8:30 (earlier than MAC!!!), if you're not registered by then you will be SOL...
The road to the base of the hill is the course so while it's hot there is no in or out of the site. Plan on showing up by the drivers meeting at 8:30 if you want to get in without having to wait to enter. We will run in three groups of 20 so expect the course to be hot for ~30-40 minutes at a time.
Currently there are seven vintage race cars entered and there will be a display of vintage racecars there as well.
For the first time there will be a couple of carts:
Rotax Rocket 125cc kart
Rocket 125cc shifter kart
They should be fun to watch
HELP!!!
We are still looking for 4-5 corner workers, from Tom's email:
I still need about five corner workers. People I can trust to come early and work the course all day, and who know their way around cones.
Remember that the corner workers get free lunch & that the stations will have snacks/water at them, Tom treats his corner workers well.
Currently we have two MAC'ers signed up to work the event:
 Jess Meyer & Adam Buhr.
PS. Average age of car?

As Paul mentioned, advance registration for modern cars is sold out. We still have room for about 12 vintage (pre-1980) cars. Modern cars are welcome to arrive at Afton day-of-show but they will only be allowed to register if we don’t get enough vintage cars to fill the 60-car roster. This is a vintage car event sponsored by a vintage car club with vintage car insurance, so we need to keep a significant majority of vintage cars, okay?
As Paul also mentioned, I’m still in need of more corner workers, two to be exact. I’m looking for:
- People who can keep both Saturday, July 8th and Sunday the 9th open because we won’t know enough about a possible rain postponement until Friday the 7th.
- People I can trust to arrive no later than 8:00am to help set up and sweep the course, then stay until at least 5:30pm to help clean up.
- People who have experience working at autocross events.
- People who like to talk on the radio, wave flags, blow whistles, and eat free snacks and free barbeque buffet lunch!
Oh, and if you know any cute girls who are willing to show up by 7:00am wearing bikinis, I still need a couple more to help with check-in. Bonus points if they’re on roller skates.
A few clarifications:
- We will have two cars on the course at any given time. It takes about one minute from bottom to top, so cars will be starting at about 30-second intervals.
- My corner workers are the only people who get free lunch. Everybody else pays $10.
- I have never heard of a Sentra getting totaled at Afton. I assure you it didn’t happen at my hillclimb. The only accident damage that I recall at my four previous hillclimbs was when a guy in a vintage Lotus broke a suspension link and scraped against the cliff rocks on the hill. The Minnesota Austin-Healey Club has an excellent safety record and I will do everything in my power to keep it that way. Phil and Paul are correct to point out that this is not a 10/10ths event. I will err on the side of safety and kick out anyone who I believe to be driving or acting in an unsafe manner. Fellas, this ain’t a huge parking lot with nothing to hit for miles. It’s a freakin’ narrow road up a hill with an unprotected 50-foot ravine!
- That said, the Amery Airport Autocross and Straight-Away Speed Run on Saturday, July 22nd (rain date July 23rd) IS a 10/10ths event, until you hit the cool down zone, that is. And with a radar gun pointed at the ½ mile straight, we are sure to see some fun numbers. Last summer a certain Japanese sport compact hit 116mph on the slightly longer straight up at the Grand Rapids, MN airport.
Yours in Speed,
- Tom

Tom, I think that happened in ski season, just like all the school buses that have wrecked there.

Tom has made a clarification that car numbers be at least 8 inches tall for the hillclimb.

Unfortunately the Taxiway is somewhat shorter & you only get ~ .3 mile for accelerating, rest is cool down. The radar gun will be shooting at your back as you go by the designated "shut down" area.
I've heard that the guy setting up the course will put an element in just before the speed run that if you do it right you'll enter the taxiway faster, if you don't you won't. I would expect the MAC'ers to do it right (I mean that guy expects the MAC'ers to do it right...).
Also regarding the Airport event, no restrictions on car age and day of event registrations are welcome!!!

If not to run, just come and check it out for a while, lots of MAC'ers there & a display of vintage race cars too. Drivers meeting at 8:30, hopefully all drivers will be there by 7:30 or 8. If you miss the meeting you lose (and no refund either). If you're there to spectate remember that the course is closed during the event, they'll run 20 cars up the hill & then open the road to two way traffic to get the cars back down, repeat, repeat, repeat all day with a break for lunch.
MAC'ers at the event:
Workers:
Jess Meyer
Cullen Murphy
Adam Buhr

An '89? Those are the rarest of the Mk1s. Very similar to the '87s and '88s except the third brake light is LEDs set into the spoiler rather than having an afterthought of a box hung off the back of the spoiler. Very slick looking.

This late breaking news from the Coordinator Extraordinaire, Tom Hazen:
If I don't get enough vintage cars to fill the roster by about 8:15 or so, I will allow modern cars to register. I actually have three drivers on a modern car waiting list who have already sent checks, and several modern car owners have called me about day-of-show registration.
I'm telling all "hope-to-register-day-of-show" people to arrive early,
definitely before 8:00am if they want to have a chance at a spot on the
roster.
Chances of getting in with a modern car are slim,
but it's worth the trip just to spectate.

No "Moderns" allowed unless there is room after day of registration classic car entrants (that is you!). Plan on running it if:
1.) You get there in time
2,) The CAR get's there in time (I'm assuming it's British/the Mini...)

nope, registered as a 1975!
even has collector plates, so i doubt they'd fight it. probably most of the other minis there are the same, most are imported that way. It is legally a 1975 austin mini.

So just how long do I get to acclerate then if that's .3 mile accel right? and I already get some entry speedhow much? anything above rolling and I should be well over 116.
what day is this exactly the speed run and ax? I'm hopelessly lost.

Yup .3 miles to accelerate, entry speed depends on you/your line & your foot/gas pedal interface. Knowing you your interface is
Won't talk about the layout as I won't know for sure til I set it up & you're not supposed to know ahead of time anyway. Let's just say a MAC'er should have an advantage...
You're welcome to come early & help set up the course though...

You are fine with a classic (10-foot-long) Mini regardless of year. It will be considered vintage at the hillclimb.

Sweet, can't wait to see the pics. It sucks I couldn't make it, but we had a meeting today that was rather important. :D How long of a course was it?
And spectated.
Which is better than not being there at all.
However, the competitive juices started flowing real fast as I watched........
