I have some time today so my husband (who used to autocross a few years ago) asked me to see if his class has changed since he quit. Seems like he's thinking of getting back into it. He drives a stock 1986 VW GTI.

Thanks!

HS. The 16V's, last I knew, were still in GS, but they didn't come out until 87 or 88, so his car must be an 8V engine.

Thanks! It is a 8. I think that puts him into a more "favorable" class than he was in when he last raced.

he must have been "out of it" for quite a while, then! I think the 8V's have been in HS for several years. They were in ES when I first started autocrossing (like, uh, 7-8 years ago), if I remember correctly!

But yes, HS is now the slowest class in all of autocrossing, except maybe a couple Junior Karts classes ;)

I swear he told me his class had changed before (or maybe other cars were reclassed that were faster than he is). I think the last time he raced was 2001 or 2002. If you've been racing for a while, you may remember the car - a black GTI with red pinstriping down the sides that says "GTI". His name is John.

John Lyon? He was always entertaining to watch (and talk to).

That's him. I have only seen him race a few times, but I love the whole up on two wheels thing. I actually did some runs with him up in St. Cloud and had to get out of the car because it was making me carsick!

I am trying to get him back into autocross and I'm thinking of trying it too.

hi sara, hi john!
that'd be cool if you showed up on occasion-it's a very entertaining car/driver to watch. and it's a sweet classic car.
if you want to go faster than John , just buy my SE-R since it comes with all the items necessary to start (see my ad posted in the for sale section). that would frustrate him to no end.
totally unrelated, i was looking at old results that are posted and was reminiscing about the good old competition we had when we were on the steep part of the learning curve on street tires.
john overdrove his car more than anyone i ever saw, but his times always seemed decent!
When we started we were in D stock together and then E stock. now the SE-R is in G stock. not sure if his car was there too for a year, but as pinhead said, it's put into the slowest class now (HS). unfortunately, the class isn't so slow with mini which probably have as much hp as the old gti with infinitly better suspension. and someday the old SE-R may get bumped down into that class.

So, where do gals who think like this all come from? Are you all hiding somewhere out there? Too late for me, since I'm at around 20 years of wedded bliss, but you young guys should maybe see if Sarah has any like minded friends! ;)

Pat,
I already found my like-minded girlfriend, she's an F/A-18 Engine mechanic :D

Hi Chuck! I'm sure it would frustrate John if I beat him in your Nissan, but it would frustrate him way more if I beat him in my Neon. ;)

>That's him. I have only seen him race a few times,

Autocross. We don't race. Sounds picky, I know, but we need to stay out of the the habit of using the R-word. Lawyers, insurance companys and site owners just flake when they hear the R-word.

>but I love the whole up on two wheels thing.

Harnath Holmes used to autocross here in a stock VW Fox on stickies. One of the smoothest drivers I have ever seen, he regularly cornered on two wheels. Haven't seen anything like is since.

>I actually did some runs with him up in St. Cloud and had to get out of the car because it was making me carsick!

This is my wife's problem. I can't take her on fast rallys or do fast touring on the milk roads.

>I am trying to get him back into autocross and I'm thinking of trying it too.

I expect that the car-sick thing won't affect you when you are driving.

Sue won't autocross. She says it is because I would not be able to handle it when she beat me. I don't see it that way. I'm prepared to believe that she has more talent than I. Heck, most people do.
