I've got a quick question about tech inspections.

It seems that the battery in my car isn't quite the size that it was designed for. My battery is tied down, and not going to fly off, but there is definately some wiggle in it. Enough that I'm concerned about it not passing tech.

So I was considering putting a couple thin strips of wood under the battery to effectively make the battery taller so that it won't wiggle any more.

So, WOOD this pass tech? (sorry guys, I couldn't resist)

Your reply was wooden, using the same pun twice, if you can't do better than that you should leaf well enough alone --- or at least branch out a bit...

I have seen a few cars pass tech with wood blocks/shims holding their batteries tight. I think so long as the wood is not the only thing holding down the battery it should be fine. I saw a new STi on satuday using a wood block to hold his lightweight battery in place, looks pretty safe and secure to me.

I used a small piece of wood to hold my battery tight.

In my former life as a Lotus Europa hacker (and this one had been hacked by people even hackier than I), I was faced with the fact that the battery had no hold-down whatsoever and the logical place to put the battery was occupied by an optional right-side fuel tank. I could see a good place to install the battery next to the tank, but there was a fuel line in the way. After fabricating new fuel lines, I built a riser block from cedar with a channel for the fuel line. The block was secured from underneath with screws through the body. The battery went over the cedar and was held down with two pieces of ready-rod and a length of angle wrapped in wide electrical tape. The result was the most secure battery I have ever seen in a Europa. Since the wood was invisible to me as well well as to tech inspectors, I wanted to make sure it didn't rot, so cedar was the logical choice.

Wood used in compression should be fine in a battery mount. Wood under a battery is essentially no different than the plastic spacer blocks that are included with some replacement batteries.

It's too bad this is a "PG" forum, 'cause I've got a great comeback, but it's just not quite appropriate for this venue. :D
