Car is a 1991 Miata. I have an aftermarket version of the piece that connects the seatbelt towers behind the headrests. This obviously did not come stock on my car, but it is essentially the same thing as the peice that did come factory on 94+ cars. Don't think it helps that much anyway, but i mainly use it to strap stuff down on during road trips so i can still go top down and not have everything fly out onto the highway!

Could easily remove it in 5 min or less, so that is not a concern, just don't want to find out is illegal after it is too late!

Yeah, it's fine. I'm actually looking to make one or modify an OEM one to fit around the roll bar in my car.

Show me the rule that would allow this is STS2.

This mod is legal in CSP, but IS NOT legal in STS2.

What if it was used to attach a harness to?

Well, you can't have a harness in an open car, unless you have a rollbar.

Assuming you do have a rollbar, I would still question the legality of the non-stock brace bar, as it's a modification not permitted in the Stock or ST rules.

I wouldn't consider using that as an attachment point for harnesess even with a roll bar. If you have a roll bar that is SCCA legal, it will have a cross tube that is just the right place for your harnesses.

Before you do that, sit in the car, with your helmet on and the seat adjusted to the normal position. Have someone measure the distance from the top of your helmet to the top of the roll bar. If it isn't 2" or more, the roll bar is "too short". You will either need to get a roll bar that is higher (and likely compromise the soft top operation), or bolt on the factory hard top.

"SCCA legal" is a bit of a misnomer,as it applies only to the materials and dimensions. The additional variable is the height of the driver. What might be legal for me at 5'5" may not be legal for a driver who is 5'10".

Ya know, you'd think I'd learn my lesson and just stop posting in this sub-forum since I'm always wrong anyway. Oh well, at leat I'm wrong often enough that no one should be listening to me.

I was thinking of 14.8.J of the ST Rules that talks about allowable strut-bars. I failed to realize though that the Miata cockpit brace does not act upon any suspension points and couldn't really be considered a "strut-bar". So, it seems I will NOT be adding any kind of cockpit brace to my Miata. :(

And i'll be removing mine!

OK, I'm going to trot this old thread out again because I've got a question about it.

I've got a Had Dog Hard-Bar roll bar. According to Hard Dog it does offer true roll-over protection (not a style-bar) but it doesn't have any cross or diag. braces to it. Just a main hoop. I know that I can't add a cockpit brace to the car itself, but can I bolt or weld an additional brace to the roll bar?

Of course. To the roll bar. There is no legal difference if your bar came with a brace or you put it in yourself. Again, the rules don't care where it came from or who made it, they care what it *is*. Read the rules for your class and for roll bars. The roll bar needs to meet the rules, no matter who constructed it.
