How would an exhaust cutout affect classing? Right now my car is bone stock, if I installed one of these after all the cats and resonator would it be legal. I know you can put on an aftermarket catback but not sure how this would appply.

as far as i know, you HAVE to have a muffler to be legal in ANY class.. as per the met council rules

The mufflers would still be there and some of the exhaust would go through them, but most of it would just bypass them. Is this rule mostly just for noise or due to a performance gain?

I took both mufflers off while installing a trailer hitch and started it just for fun. I was surprised that it was not that loud, due to all the cats and resonator still being there. Most of the ricers with 5" coffee cans sound louder than my car with no mufflers at all

Jim with the STi didn't have a muffler, I don't think Steve's WRX wagon did either. I think as long as it goes under the DB rules it doesnt need to have one in certain classes.

not sure on this though. I just was pretty sure neither of those cars had mufflers.

I'm hoping I could get away with the cutout. The boxer just sounded wicked without the mufflers, definitely not your typical four banger. I am used to V8s, but the little boxer really surprised me with its sound.

Yeah, I love the way Subarus sound without that much muffling, I had an APEXi N1 on my '94 WRX and it was pretty loud, but it had a nice growl to it.

If i had one of those, I'd have to be careful where i pointed it.

My exhaust currently shoots fire. don't want to burn anything!

It would aslo be a massive headache. I don't have any cats, i can imagine it would be earsplitting.

Exhaust from the cat back is open...you can do anything you want. The good thing is that if someone says your too loud, you only have to flip a switch!

sometimes a loud exhaust doesn't help.
Sometimes it can hurt. Best thing to do is dyno it with and without. You just might be surprised.
High Performance Arts, [Blaine] Co. Rd 242 just west of Hwy. 65 Has a real nice dyno.
$90 for three pulls.

heh. some of us have four wheels pushing our cars dwight...

I'm gettingt dyno tuned next month at LSE, which has a new 4wd dyno. RS motors has one too. I'd put an exhaust cutout on sheerly for the scaring the carp out of people factor more than the performance factor.
