Has anyone ever made an effort to ask 3M about using any of there parking lots, either at the Maplewood head quarters or another site?

Two other questions that I have are. How much do we pay for a site and how much is insurance per event?

It's not that easy at 3M. I started the process, but was bogged down in red tape almost immediately. Not to say we cannot make it happen, but there are quite a few hoops to jump through. I have a contact and can re-energize the effort if people think it is worth it.

Question: My impression is that it was not much biiger than Midway. Is this true?

Pat you're right on the size, not much bigger than midway
Good parking areas though
Us "old timers" spent alot of years racing in that lot.

Yes we did. Timers much older than Randy, in fact. I probably ran there first in the spring of 1969, but maybe in the late fall of 1968.

3M lots were available to the 3M Sports Car Club, which was a division of the "3M Club". One of the things that killed the 3MSCC was that the 3M Club wanted to handle all the money. In short, the 3M Club wanted to change the setup so that instead of 3MSCC having its own budget as it had historically been done, the 3M Club would get all the entry fees from events and give money to 3MSCC when they proved they needed it. Besides the hassle, the 3MSCC folks thought they might end up subsidizing the other clubs under the 3M Club umbrella.

One of the other problems they had was similar to that of the of also-defunct University of Minnesota Sports Car Club: 3MSCC officers had to be members of the 3M Club, and therefore 3M Company employees.

The surest path to getting the 3M Lots back would be the resurrection of the 3MSCC. This would of course have to be done by 3M employees. What sort of issues there would be with the 3M Club now, I have no idea. It's been a long time, and the leadership there (elected by the members of the very-large 3M Club) has probably changed several times since then.

Not necessarily true Phil. According to my contact, we may obtain a conditional use permit from 3M without it going through a club. There are applications to fill out, forms to submit, action plans to produce, security plans to create, and some other stuff. Like I said, it is not impossible at this stage...just difficult.

Have the club give the word and I will run it through to it's conclusion.

Let me know what I can do to help. I can fill out forms/applications. I'd be real interested in running in an open lot. Maybe one of the real old timers can say whether or not the effort is worth it as I have not personally seen the 3m site.
Geez, my wife is going to have some things to say if I use the m3 after all the money I've been dumping into the nissan...

Steven,
Insurance last year was over $200 per event and rental was about $700 to $800 per event .

These are from memory but are pretty close...

I didn't say it was impossible. I said that the surest path to a permanent use of 3M lots is to have a 3M Sports Car Club.

Second-best is to have MAC members who are 3M employees submit the forms.

So who here is a 3M employee?

I was a 3M employee during my first incarnation as an autocrosser, and I was a full member of the 3MSCC (non-employees could be "associate members").

I was also the first associate member of the Univac Sports Car Club. I had an argument about that with a girl I met at a USCC meeting. She claimed that she was the first associate member of USCC. We must have enjoyed the argument. We will have been married for 30 years the end of this April.

Congratulations Phil and spouse. [can't remember her name, oldtimers disease]
Why isn't that girl out autoxing with us?
Bobbi and I celebrated 32 years in February. And you remember the incident that started and ended her career as an autoxer.
Who else out there has years of wedded bliss? We'd like to know.

Claims that I will be hard to live with when she beats me.

I feel terrible about that. I keep thinking I should have expected the other guy to do something stupid. She really ought not base her outlook on the sport on something as rare as this, but I can understand that she does.
