third gear wasn't a gear, it was a wheel.

Oh my god. That is a little frightening.

Were JDM WRX boxes any stronger or was I just not shifting hard enough to frag any gears?

some of the JDM ones were stronger....
The 04+ uses wider gears, so it's stronger too.
His gearbox was never meant to handle as much power as there was.
it was a 1.8L NA gearbox, mated to a JDM EJ207G engine with custom management.
He was putting out WAAYYYY more power than that gear box could handle.
i'm still stunned it was 3rd gear and not 2nd.

1 and 2 were WRX gears, 3,4,5 were "L" gears.
That's why 3 basically blew the **** up.
The JDM gearset by and large don't drmatically differ from the USDM ones unless they're RA sets. The 04+ has wider gears, but they wouldn't fit in my case and let me go ito reverse, so i ended up with an 02 set (rated at 225-300chp) so I might be pushing the top end of what these gears can hold too, only time will tell. I really had my heart set on an RA (race altered) gearset with some huge tooth roots and tiny ratios, but theyre just too hard to get at this time of year and probably wouldn't have fit well without some trickery.
And shane, there is no such thing as an EJ207G. It's an EJ20G =]
the EJ207 is the version 5 -version 6 engine. I have a version 1 - version 3 engine.

Zak,
Are your new '02 gears cryo-treated?

nope, didnt have the time before i needed them put into the car. Probably next winter would be the best time to do that, i'm probably going to get 4 new rotors and the gearset done at one time. I'll probably keep it around 200whp or so until then.
