View Full Version : New season, new car?

The 2003 season is coming up soon, so does anybody have a new car they are going to run this year? I myself am going to run my CRX at bigger lots, but am going to run my Protege at smaller lots like Midway probably in HST. It is a suprisingly responsive car and I look forward to driving something different. It is a '93 model, 5 spd, DOHC motor and I think it makes for a top notch HS car. I think I'm going to order some AVS intermediates for it as they are only 41 dollars at Tire Rack. Sweet! Per Schroeder from Grassroots motorsports once named it one of the best handling front wheel drive cars around. This is surely stretching it a bit, but it does seem decent for an econobox 4 door.

I picked up a '91 CRX Si and prepping it for CSP. I'm transferring the Koni yellows from my Civic, have new H&R springs and poly bushings to install and 13x7 Revolutions with R1's. With any luck I'll be ready by MOWOG 1, otherwise I'll be back with the HST Civic.

Phil,

That CRX is going to be killer. :)

I'm hoping to have a new ride for each event! I do not want to bring my Swift FF over to Midway since there simply isn't enough room to drive it. I am hoping to be a "guest" driver for selected events. (Meaning the ones I can make.) I'm accepting offers!! ;) (wink, wink)

Pat,
I'd be more likely to offer if I hadn't seen all those posts about your propensity for flat spotting tyres :p :p

Can you behave/be trusted with the MINI?

I'll wait for answers from those who've loaned you a car in the past...

Pat tried REALLY hard to flat-spot the tires on my Type-R at the Evolution School last year.

Fortunately, my car comes with ABS so he go away with it ;)

Paul,

If you don't have rear drum brakes you should be fine.
ABS is always a good idea though.

As for new cars. My brother and I might be racing a '03 WRX sedan
in either stock, SP, P, STX, or SM. We might also be racing the GSR again,
my brother's SE-R if he doesn't sell it, and for sure my Beetle Turbo in
some prepared class. I was really hoping to race the old mans '96 Corvette
Gran Sport, but I think he is scared to lets us drive something with a real
motor.

I just want to drive something that is rear wheel drive instead of
wrong wheel dirve. If anyone knows of a nice RWD car for sale let
me know. I'm currently looking for a BMW E30 325is or Gen2 MR2
Turbo. If you see either of these for sale let me know. I am not in
a hurry, but if the right car is for sale I would have to buy it.

Pat,
Since the MINI has anti-lock brakes and active suspension control and the guys in the posts above stuck up for you I will extend an offer of a drive---but not for MOWOG1 as I've already offered Dwight a chance to co-drive then.
Paul
PS. If your 1st run is faster than mine you might not get a 2nd run :D :D :D
PPS. Yes the ASC can be turned off.

You guys are killing me here! :) I can't count on both hands how many people flat spotted my tires, but I can count on one finger how many times *I've* done it. 8-P

I drove the 2003 9th Place Nationals finisher Mini owned by Jim Harn last fall and placed it in the top 4 PAX in Milwaukee. Loved it...really neat car but inside wheel spin is awful. How about this...You ride with me and every time I lock them up, you can wack me on the back of the head?

whack you on the back of the head

AFTER

you take your helmet off :p :p :p

Also,
I want to make it to Milwaukee this summer, I'm thinking of taking a 3 day w/e (come back on Monday)---can you give me a link to any schedule/calender/info on the Milwaukee Autocrosses so I can plan ahead???

Thanks,
Paul

Hey Paul,

How about letting me drive your Mini-me? Last time you let me drive it, we were running in ASC mode and NEITHER one of figured it out until the end. I honestly thought your fuel-line was shot.

Ill let you drive my Type-R so you can experience a FWD car that can exit a corner without doing a burnout! :D

BTW
Will one of the moderators please get rid of this account. I have another one called SalahK. I have already PM'ed Jon and Applebit but with no response.

Salah,
Sure, I'll ride along and maybe pick up some FWD tips too.
That'll be all the "guest drives" for a while tho, I don't want to overdo it...

Randy,

Your 318is is the reason I am turned on to BMW E30's. It is the nicest one I have ever seen, but I really need something with air, and really really really want the 2.5L inline 6. I have time on my side since the Beetle lease is up in March 2004, but the E30's 325is's are hard to come by. I still really want to drive a gen2 MR2 Turbo, but they seem even harder to find then nice a nice 325is. Oh well!!

Chris,
Thanks for the heads up. I would like to find something a little newer, since I will be using it as my summer car, but please keep your eyes open for me.

Hmmm, I'm doing just the opposite for a change.

Not only will I be driving the SAME CAR at each event I manage to attend this year, but I even OWN IT too!

Fitz,

Did they re-gear the V-spec for 2003? I heard some rumours that Nissan was considering this do to concerns of the short gear ratios. Also, are you able to get any significant neg. camber on the front-end of your SER? Are the rims 7 inches wide?

A different C4 (Vette) for me this coming season. Mucho different this time, I get to modify this one a bit :D

Unfortunately there are engine intake modifications already done to it that push me out of SP, so I'm stuck in BP without a ton of hp :(

Guess I'll be getting taken to the cleaners by someone... :sarc

Planning on having fun though!

Dave
Is it spring time yet?

I can't think of any intake modification which would push you out of Street Prepared except for supercharging. What's up?

Neither one of these would be somthing I would describe as "intake modifications".

Maybe I would call matching the intake ports to the intake manifold an "intake modification", but that's legal for one inch into the head, isn't it?

Sorry Phil It is very much part of the intake of an engine, maybe not the manifold BUT still part of the intake.

Hi Phil-

Intake work on the car is as follows...
-base manifold has been ported
-runners are aftermarket big diameter version of the original
-throttle body has been opened up too
-adjustable fuel pressure regulator
-cold air intake on the front

The funny thing is that other than the cold air intake, it all looks very stock. I've held a stock runner up next to the aftermarket one and you can't tell the difference.

I can't (legally) run these things in SP can I?

Dave that's very legal for SP as long as the heads are stock for that engine with no more than match porting of 1 inch into the port.

Yeah I ended up selling my Green 1995 civic w/ the JRsupercharger and all the RICE crap done to it. I ended up buying a G2 integra. Thought it would be a fun car and I kinda took a liking to them... Slow as can be right now, thinking some suspension can make up for that. So I guess I'll see how the G2 does this year...

Yes, you can. You can take off the exhaust manfold and throw it in the dumpter, slap on aftermarket manifold (or one you make yourself), using any kind of injection or carburation you like. You can't supercharge it, but various types of ram air are allowed.

>cold air intake on the front

You didn't have to cut or throw away any of the body to put this in, did you?

I guess I need to read the rules... Looks like BSP for me!

Good thing braided steel brake lines are legal in SP too.

Thanks

So are slotted and/or drilled rotors as long as they're the stock diameter. Finally;)

First and second gear and the final drive are all taller, which is good because the 02's (yes that's plural) I drove last year were always running out of gear too early. I think the 03' will be much better. I haven't tried anything with alignments yet and will no doubt be running the relatively crappy OEM Continental tires on the rather heavy stock 17x7" rims all year.
