What makes a good AutoX steering wheel? Better to have larger, or smaller diameter wheel? Thicker, or thinner rim? Leather, rubber, wood? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

A smaller than stock wheel will feel quicker, at the expense of somewhat higher steering effort. I prefer a wheel of 320mm-330mm diameter. Quite a bit smaller than most stock wheels, but still fairly substantial. 350mm diameter is quite popular for cars that see a lot of street driving. Thickness & covering material are really a matter of personal preference. I just picked up a 330mm Momo Model 78 for the Miata - a very popular steering wheel for rally cars. It's suede - which is great if you wear driving gloves, but will wear quickly if you drive without gloves.

Whatever you get, don't go cheap. I had a cheap eBay wheel in the Miata that broke after 1 season. :x

Your suppose to have a loose grip on the wheel, not crush it like the neck of an insubordinate step-son
He's right on that though. Cheap is never the way to go when buying car parts. What size wheel you drive should be based on how your car is setup. If you don't have powersteering like me, a smaller wheel would make it an extreme challange to turn. If you have powersteering, you can go smaller. But how much caster you have will also play a roll in the wheel you choose.

Another reason to go smaller is for leg clearance. A lot of autocross drivers (myself included) like the seat pretty close to the steering wheel. In some cars, this can cause the legs to interfere with the wheel. I have this problem with stock Miatas & Minis. A smaller wheel significantly reduces the problem.

Which is why a wheel is on my wish list.... :)
