View Full Version : If I could drive anyone's car I would want to drive?

All this talk about Dave's NSX made me think. If I could drive anyone's
car who's would it be?
The first car that came to my mind was John Boos' Corvette, but I'm not
sure if I am man enough to tame that car. From my brothers experience
he made it sound like everything feels like a Geo Metro after driving that
beast. Then I was thinking about Peter Hsu's M3; the Engel's Supercharged
MR2; Salah's Type-R; Adam's 88 CRX Si (best damn car I ever owned); but
in the end the car that I would want to drive the most is Ron Marx's
Corvette Z06. That car is a beast and is about to get a hell of a lot faster.
John Boos' Vette. I can still remember how he cleaned our times by over 5sec at one of the vette events.. tell him to ship it to Laguna Seca at the end of the month for my track day so i can clean everyone else's times :). other than that, I'll drive anyone else's Z06s if offered the key!
i've driven Peter Hsu's M3 and loved the power. that got me started in this power thing. Understeers quite a bit at low speeds but i'm sure it's a compromise for those high speed track sweepers. Sweet car!
Engel's MR2 in an autocross, that damn thing can really turn.

I think I would only enjoy a Z06 on a road course then in an autocross, I wouldn't mind Engel's MR2 tho.

How are you going to feel about haveing him in your class?
I seem to have read somewhere that the MR2 Super is being moved to CSP from ASP.

I thought Jeremy's car understeered quite bad. I drove another MR2 like his, and the darn thing would transition from understeer to snap oversteer in a hearbeat. The fact that Jeremy can wheel that thing around as fast as he does shows he's a great driver.
Steve, I thought you wanted something fast...how about the Swift? Data from an 1984 issue of Car and Driver: 0-60 in 4.3 (better with my gearing - definately under 4), 60-0 in 84 feet, 1.26 lateral G. (again, probably better now with newer tire technology and on Autocross compounds.) *All* cars truly feel like trucks after a season in one of these!
I get disappointed in some cars. I got lucky enough to take a run in a Ferarri 308 once, and I hated it! What a slug. My Neon would have kicked it's ass. Some cars are really suited for high speed cruising, not autocross.
Boos's car would be great, Z06's sounds like a hoot! One car on my list, aside from the famous A Mod Phantom, is a Lotus Europa in SP or Prepared trim. (Something with a little more power than yours Phil E.) I've always had a soft spot for that car! Or maybe the triple rotor Sprite running in E Mod...what a rocket ship! My brain hurts.... I can't decide, I'll just take em all...variety is the spice of life!

One of the things I enjoy most about autox is the variety of interesting cars that I see at the different events I attend. Narrowing down the list to just one car isn't possible. I'll have to pick two:
1. The Engel's Lotus Esprit. I know it's a bit vintage, but the first time I saw it at DCTC I was amazed that anyone would take something that exotic out and actually DRIVE it. The amount of body roll it displayed while skipping very quickly between pylons made me re-think what I thought I knew about rock-hard suspension systems being the only way to build a sports car.
2. The other car hasn't been at a MAC event to my knowledge. A gentleman by the name of Bob Maur has a Ralt RT-4 SuperVee that he runs with DMVR. It's a black and white formula car with all the wings and ground effects of a modern CART car. It's also powered by a VW water-pumper engine. It's the fasted VeeDub I've ever seen. ;)

Man, you don't watch the list for months and all of a sudden your car is a known topic. Kinda cool...
Don't know what to say other than I am glad that so many people want to try the MR2... I guess now I won't leave the keys in the ignitition at events anymore. :p
On a side note, the car is still dead. I have yet to yank the motor, this next semester should be and easier one with more free time to play with cars.
And to solve the Understeering problem that Pat mentioned, the battery will be relocated to the front trunk while the engine is out and a new lighter exhaust system will be installed. BTW, the car terminally plows at low speed, really really sharp turns (like the course Pat drove on) and snaps you around backwards on fast turns. Or in others words there is a happy speed that both the front and the back slide at the same time (DCTC was great for this) and there are speeds that the back sticks and pushes the front and then there is that third speed that lets you get a look at what was behind you.
I am still undecided about power upgrades. The main pulley has to be replaced and it would be just as easy to buy a new pulley that adds 40+ HP.
Not sure about going to CSP though... I do remember hearing that the AS MR2 super was going to CS, I thought that for SP it was still in A. Although if I up the boost that will but me into a prepared class that at the last time I checked was unlisted.

Why Phil, whatever would make you think that I would be so crass as to correct the obvious, glaring, painful, egregious, blatant, and erroneous spelling of one of the simplest words in the language? That's right, you know me. HAVING said all that I have to say on that topic, I can't wait to see how the Dutton will do against all the new hardware.

Pat,
I won't drive a car withput AC and a Radio. Just Kidding. The biggest
fear I would have about driving that thing is from racing at Pro-Karts
with Mike (aka GotBoost). He slammed me into the wall on all three
of the races. Hopefully therapy will help fix that though.
As for cars. I still am trying to figure out how John crushed everyone with 2
or more doors at MOWOG 6. It was a super tight course and he pounded
that big boat through it. For you that don't know about Ron's car. It has
a ton of Doug Rippie mods and will beat John's car in the corners, and will
run neck and neck with John's car in a straight line until John turns the rev
limiter up a few hundred RPM to get a jump in each gear. I heard that
Ron's car might be getting a badass motor in it that will make it one of
the fastest C5 Z06's in the states and could be hunting Vipers at this years
One Lap of America.
Brian. From the language used, I would swear you sound like a lawyer!
But thank you for the humor, I really needed it this morning.

Hay Steve, what about my car?? Remember I have that cool sequential ratchet shifter you like soo much? Hahahaha. And I havn't seen any votes for the car I drove in Mowag 5, or was it 6? A mint 2001 Ford Crown Victoria. Very sweet. Did you look at my 1st time and compare it to some other 1st times??? Not too shabby I would say for a 4000lb car on street tires. Thank you very much. Hahahaha. And I didn't even get to walk the coarse or anything. And it made cool sounds. Okay, I'm done stumping for the Crown Vic.

I would have put the Crown Vic on my list, but hey...what are the chances.... I thought we were trying to be realistic here!

We are always hiring, Patrick. It's not too late for you. I think it might be for the Mosely brothers tho, hahahahahaha.

I would have to pick Randy's 318is. I am curious how much I would improve, driving the same car I own PLUS $14000 invested. I think it would be fun to compare my driving skills with the two extremes of the same car.

What do you mean Bob? I may have been charged, but I was never convicted. As for the racket shifter. I'm a fan, but Chris loves them. His Camaro had one in his Camaro. God that thing was fast, to bad he never got it to run right. :(
Take care Bob, nice hearing from you and please don't pull me over anymore.

I would drive that white Porsche that dude had out about two years ago... that thing looked like fun.. Too bad it hasn't been running right this last year... Ohh well, the Saturn was fun though!
Hey, a rummer I heard is this dude has the fuel system purchase ready to go-- just waiting for a few final details.

Jon,
Don't be jealous of the guy in the Porsche!! I would rather drive the
Saturn then work on the Porsche anyday. :)
Good Luck and I hope that guy comes back out with White Lighting.
