Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4

everything was fine until I left from work today.

I started the car and it died. So I started it again and it died.

I started it again and held the gas and left for home always with a foot on the gas to keep it at about 1000 RPM.

otherwise it was perfectly fine - no loss of power.

Battery is good and cranks really well.

Any ideas?

Disconnect the battery, that will reset the computers.

I googled this (3000gt idle problem) and came up with a Throttle Position Sensor that is out of adjustment. apparently if the TPS isn't closing all the way the car will not idle on it's own. Try Google, it's full of great answers.

Oh, and good luck, I know how bad it sucks have a car that doesn't want to run. I had to sign a Subaru Factory Mechanic (who didn't speak english) on base in order for him to spend 30 minutes to tell me that my fuel pump had died. Which is what I thought it was, but people kept telling me it was the Crank position sensor or cam position sensor. </rant>

no check engine light

I will unplug the battery when I get home tonight and see what happens

Hope the reset works. If not, I second the vacuum leak.

I'm not a miata expert, but I'd guess that resetting the battery isn't going to solve this. I'm thinking along the lines of a TPS, but more likely a vacuum leak.

tried the CPU reset - disconnected the battery for about an hour then reconnected it - no luck still very low idle

looked into the 3000GT shop manual and found the engine idle adjustment screw and figured I'd give that a shot - turned it up and so far so good.

the engine idle adjustment screw is VERY loose - no resistance when I turn it.

Maybe it just needed to be readjusted.

thanks for all your input!

Good thing. It's not a Miata, it's the big Mitsu.

Not that I would expect this, but is this screw supposed to have a lock nut? If the nut vibrated off, that would give the idle screw no resistance to wandering about with vibration, and it is going to happen again.

If there is no lock nut in the design, maybe you could put on some blue LocTite.

Your car has one. ;)

If you want something archaic, I just set the ignition timing on my motorcycle... Spark advance is specified in millimeters rather than degrees, so you have to stick a dial gauge into the spark plug hole, zero it out at TDC, and turn the engine backwards by hand until you're at 1.8mm BTDC. The entire job requires a dial gauge, a set of feeler gauges, a multimeter, and an assortment of wrenches and screwdrivers. The same job on my Miata requires a timing light and a 12mm wrench.

Well, I am signing off now. Just because her TR4 is one wheel short of a set doesn't mean I can't take her to Square Peg for breakfast in the Saturn.

I think Phil hit on something. What a great vanity plate "The Big Mitsu" would be on the 3000GT!
