Some of you may know about my infamous oil dripping problem. It was all fun and games, you know just a VW 'marking it's territory', until the oil started getting on the clutch too and making it slip.

So I pulled it apart this weekend and I found the problem. There is a cover plate that goes around the crankshaft where it exists the block. This plate houses the crankshaft seal. This is on the transmission side btw. It turns out that this plate cracked in half! It is pretty thick aluminum but somewhere along the line it cracked and thus causing a pretty good drip. It's not a loading bearing part so no harm done, I just had to install a new clutch. Hopefully next time around I will just have a few small drips and no puddles!

I don't know how or when it cracked, but you would think that I would've noticed something like that when I had it apart for the last time I did the clutch.

Thanks to Neal Tovsen for borrowing me the 'engine support beam', very sophisticated design. I love how VW guys stick together.

Glad to hear that your problem was clear and easy to see. The worst thing is when you can't tell for sure if you fixed the problem.

But wow...you cracked the seal carrier?!? I can't think of any reason why in the world that would have cracked...maybe you got a little rough trying to line up the output shaft when you installed the transmission last time? There's just simply no way any load should ever have been placed on that bracket. Wierd.

Glad it worked! You know, I had to have those two holes custom drilled in that 2x6 lumber by an experienced craftsman. Very tricky stuff!

Maybe the flywheel mounting flange or whatever is in there is slighty bent. Hitting the seal housing when under a specific load/heat/somthin/somthin?.? Or just gave way after all those years inside that engine. Or you could have a thrust bearing or sideplay issue with the crank?.? Umm...

Could RallyXing be a contributing factory to this problem???

I have never heard of this happening before. I'm just going to write it off as a freak metalurgical failure. It's completely dry and non-dripping now though.

I'd be more excited by a dry paddock and track HEH, as I don't share a garage with Doug HEH...

That's why I didn't go to the last autocross, to spare you guys my drips on the track. But now it is dry so no complaining! Are you coming to Valleyfair Doug, what are you driving?
