Borrowed the car out last night and the person who drove it kinda made it sound like he missed his shift or got it stuck somehow. :( Anyways now 1/3/5th gears are all funny and won't hold you have to keep it there before it will stay 2/4/R are the same way they have always been. Any ideas??

Thanks

check the shift linkageI had a similar problem with a bypass valve that was in the way of the linkage

I'l be checking the shift linkage tomorrow hope the cables aren't messed up but then again a 250+ dollar shift linkage sounds better than pulling the tranny.

Any other ideas keep them coming. It has cables/wire for the shift linkage.

I lost 1st, 3rd, and 5th temporarily when I installed an intake in my car, turned out it was the intake tube interfering with the shift linkage like Steve said

well the problem with that is that the older civics had shift RODS and came very close to the exhaust piping, especially if you have an exhaust system AND a short shift lever

Jason,

Triple-check the linkage or anything else that would contribute to the issue: Engine Mounts, Header/Exhaust mounts, etc.

I think this is another symptom of the 2nd gear popping out problem you have been having.

This is a different car this is my Prelude, nothings changed on the Civic as of late.

One other thing the Prelude uses wire for it's shift linkage Civic's use shift rods at least the older ones do and I'm not sure on the Integra's, the older ones have shift rods, not sure if they were changed to wire at some point but, I'm sure Tim would know.

I'll be checking the shift linkage starting today after Nikki brings the car home from work, she's loving this 2/4 shift thing( NOT ). But, It's the only car she can drive to work at the moment, until we go get another EF for her Wednesday Morning, might get one for myself too. Hence the ablity to compete in either HS, STS, CSP, or SM in an EF for ValleyFair Weekend.

Probally CSP, though gotta like the 13's with the 235 rubber. I don't have good street tire Rubber, otherwise you'd be dealing with an 89 Civic Si in STS. :D Maybe I'll come up with some goofy mismash and enter SI as I've never ran it.

Ah, the Prelude...

Ok, look for something binding the cable when you make the movement to 1-3-5. Most likely this would be a broken cable as you are pulling on the cable to get to those gears.

Make's sense to me Tim, kinda what I was thinking now I can only figure out what the heck he did, I can only guess jammed it in a gear he wasn't trying for.

Here's a post I made to preludeonline.com

With the car off you can push it in to gear it doesnt have the acknowledgement like the 2/4/R do, what it does instead is you can push it up and it will gently push it self back back a 1/2 in or so, you push in it feels funny kinda queasy like and then you let go it goes back in the neutral direction about a 1/2in. I had the center console off when I was doing this to check it out.

Anybody know of a good place to pick up new shift linkage, and how much of this do I really attribute to the person driving the car when he did whatever he did, he himself had a hard time explaining it.

Thanks

Jamming it into gear and missing the shift is probably what happened. It was probably just inexperience with the throttle/shifter combination. I still mung up shifts on the TSX...

Thus, the cable broke or stretched. It could also be a bent connector on the shifter end or trans end. Also, make sure all of the clips (u-shaped) on the trans end are still firmly attached.

Your only hope for a part is probably at the dealer. $325 list for the entire assembly (at least for a '99 lude). Ouch. I found it online for $243.98 at www.hondaautomotiveparts.com.

That's OK the kid that did it says he'll pay for it. As he knows it didn't shift like that before he did whatever he did. He knows the price, I'll check everything out first. Although I think the thing that will hurt them the most is Nikki likely won't be loaning out the Prelude to anybody anytime soon. And for good reason, my brothers and their friends absolutely love the car, and Nik has been nice enough to let them use it from time to time, to take girlfriends out, cruise broadway in rochester, goto the fairs, etc. If were that nice to my brothers I think my kids maybe in for a treat when there old enough. Yeah sure son take out the NSX or whatever, oh hey that'd be a good idea no backseat.
