I'm new to the whole "R" compound thing & have streetable Kuhmo Ecsta V700's on the Sprite. My question is this:
On a 60 sec course how much difference would there be between the 700 and the 710 (or any other good R compound "slick").
I'm trying to figure out my tires/rims plans for next year. If it's a large difference I'll go with street tires & dedicated rims/slicks.
Thanks,
Paul
Sizes available is a problem in 13" and 14 " wheels.
Size!

If V700's represent a compromise over a V710 or an S05, I would expect a considerable differance in performance when compared to say Hoosier Slicks.
Which your allowed in DP.

Ah Paul if your gonna do street tire/race rubber thing why not use real slicks for the race rubber, your allowed.
Steve G. did say but I think he was refering to real slicks in those sizes and the multitudes they come in for 13 in's as he's been trying to get phile on them for a while now.

Pick whatever size you like that's available in the R25A compound.

Before I plan on spending the $$$, what would the time difference be on a 60 sec course...

1-2 sec over V100's or over street tires?
As I said at the start of the thread, this is for next year...

From what I hear, the difference between DOT R compounds and slicks is almost as big as the difference between high-end street tires and R compounds.

I think slicks are worth at least 9 seconds over regular R-compounds.
Now go buy they Paul :D

Hey Roger,
If I'm not 9 sec faster will you pay for the tyres?
I will be buying them, but not til February. That gives me time to figger what to get (the only 13" 710's are too wide, could cause interference...
The reast of this season I'll just be becoming one with the car as is:

Just so we are clear: both the 700 Ecstas and the 710's you are asking about are both DOT approved tires (officially street legal). On a 60 second course, the 710's are probably worth .3 to .5 seconds. True race rubber will be lighter and stickier and you will probably have more options for sizes. My guess is is that they are also probably cheaper.

Paul, here's what cha do. Call hoosier. Tell them about your car. Weight, HP, suspension mods, use- auto x and some lapping w/vintage groups. Ask them what the best SLICK would be to use. Also ask them what the optimun wheel size is for that tire. Extra wide may not be better, just heavier. As far as tires, for a lighter car, bigger may not be better either. You want as much grip as you can get, but for a lightweight, (thats a good thing, not a slam) like your car, to much tire and not enough weight will take longer to get to the "sticky" temps. Get the softest compound, the 25's, your car is l i g h t. Use your 700's as transport and rain/cold weather tires. On better days, put the slicks on and don't lift. You probably won't have to.

There are some Hoosier slicks that are set for 5.5x13 or 6X13 wheels (I have 6X13). I don't have a trailer, though. If I was MADE of money, I could buy a set for the LOG, as I will be borrowing a trailer for that.
Bottom line is that I drive to local events. Hoosier doesn't even want me driving on thier DOT tires. Since my car will never be competitive in its class on any tire, I might was well stick with the not-so-sticky Ecsta 700 and be slow.
