I ran the novice school this weekend and it was great; thanks to everyone who made it possible. I am hoping to do more events this summer, starting in SI, but would like to plan ahead for future classing.

I have already removed the stock STi wing and put on the smaller WRX wing. Where does that land me? I still have the stock wing to swap back if need be.

I am considering upgrading the springs and tophats, but those would be my only additional modifications. What class would that put me in and what kind of competition would I be facing? (I dug through the SCCA 2005 pdf for an hour but am not going to hazard a guess here in "public"...)

Finally, I would be running street tires; I think I kind of get the "handicapping" for the street tire class, but how would the spring upgrade affect that?

Thanks all...

The springs will take you out of any of the stock classes, so with street tires your looking at ESP(race rubber) or ESPt(street tires) or you could run the STU class that is for street tires and allows mods such as springs and other items that are fairly common. I'm not positive on the wing deal but, I think it mostly matters if the stock had the 3rd brake light the new one needs to as well at least for STU anyhow not sure with about ESP. Play with the boost and you'll end up in SM.

Steve with the SM2 Miata knows quite a bit about setting up WRX's especially on street tires. You should look him up.

Removing the stock spolier creates a bit of a classing problem for you. Since Street Prepared (SP) rules allow you to add, but not replace, a stock spoiler - your modification would bumper your car all the way to Street Modified (SM). Unfortunately, you've crossed the bounds into an area where the SP rules are pretty restrictive, to limit "creative" interpretations of the rules.

If you replace the stock wing, the suspension mods would put you in ESP.

Personally, I'd just leave the wing on and run SM, once you're ready to move out of SI. There aren't many prepped SM cars in MAC at present. Except for Neil & Katie's SM Scirocco (and maybe at some point Jason's Civic), even a stock STi would currently be VERY competitive in SM or ESP at MAC events.

Steve do we run the STU class at all?

Yeah it'll be awhile before I'm even close to full prep, currently aiming for 80 to 90% before the start of the next season, this season mostly working on major kinks like would really like to pick up some koni's and gc coilovers in the right spring rate, and the biggest kink of ALL the DRIVER, going for as much seat time as possible this year. Gotta get the other half to unlock the coffers. hehe

Just look at the Nordstern even we were all pretty close, Neal done so much prep that rocco of his that it's a fight for 2nd in just about everything else(civic, sti, evo, etc). It really comes down to driver.

Steve do we run the STU class at all?

No, we only support SCCA classes with full National status. As a result, MAC is not presently offering STU or STS2.

thanks for the info, guys.

I'm kind of wondering why an A stock car goes to E street prepared (rather than ASP) but perhaps it is futile to try to follow the logic behind the SCCA rules...
