Last Sunday's MOWOG was definitely not the course for the Europa, either. The old tires, the remains of the LSD I have attempted to chemically neuter, and the endless succession of tight 180s combined to make Grace virtually refuse to go around the course. The only thing she liked was the slalom. She always likes slaloms.
I was looking around for cars which seemed to like the course. One that was looking good was the yellow bugeye.
Course dependency can be a very weird thing.
Ironically, at the Lotus Owners Gathering last week they set up the course to appease the owners of Esprit Turbo cars who had been complaining that past LOG courses were too tight. Of course many of the past LOG courses were set up in whatever hotel parking lot they had. This time they had the MGA Research center, a proving ground built by AMC to serve the Kenosha plant. We were on the skidpad, which was bigger than Canterbury, had better traction and was CLEAN enough that you didn't get a "consensus line".
The ironic part is that the Esprit Turbo guys did not dominate. They surely had more fun than they would have on a tiny course, but vintage cars were faster.
FTD was a forgone conclusion: Larry Shauf's D-Modified Europa "funny car". Tube frame, carbon-fibre body shell, slicks.
Second overall was Jeff Ivers' beautiful Elan which he has brought back from the dead and been campaigning in SCCA Solo2 ASP.
Third overall was Grace N. Violence, the same scruffy little Europa on 1996 tires that wouldn't go around the MOWOG course on Sunday. Most of the LOG course was middle-to-top of second gear for me. One section was wide open and I ran through most of third gear.
I have a ton of pictures and scans therefor. The scans are high-res and run about a half a meg each. I can post these somewhere or email pix to individuals. If you saw anything you liked in the pile of pix I had at the MOWOG, let me know.
Here are the overall results from LOG autocross. The classes they used were somewhat "approximate", so I didn't type them in here.
