So, I just picked up a Sony Handycam this weekend (got a helluva deal on it, too), and was wondering about camera mounts. I know I've seen a gent with a Miata toolin' around with some suction cups, and another forum I belong to has a homey depot special design that I like a lot.
Any suggestions from a rules/safety standpoint? I mean, when I build stuff, it's usually built well past any margin for "oops".
This is what they built, bolted to floor, screwed to rear body with a ratcheting tie down looped over the camera to the outriggers.

The mount you show a picture of would likely be OK, but it looks like it might be in an annoying location for the driver. Generally, you can get by with a fairly lightweight mount, as long as the camera is also tethered.
This guy offers a pretty wide range of mounts. Maybe you can get a few good ideas: http://www.chasecam.com

What kind of car is it going into?
in my saturn, i just drilled a hole in the rear deck and bolted the camera to it. it took awesome footage. the thing didn't move a millimeter.

I've seen someone who drilled a couple holes in a board - stuck the headrest posts through it on the seat - and mounted the camera to the front of the board.
The camera is not going anywhere if you do it that way, but I dunno if it'd pass tech. ;)
EDIT: ...although, I don't think my RX-7 has headrests...

People sell mounts like that on ebay and stuff, but they always seem to result in really shaky video.
think of how much your seat shakes with no weight in it.

Providing your camera is light enough, the best place for it is on your head. Autocross cars, more than race cars, are usually pointed a different direction than they are going. Our corners are tighter. Drivers, especially drivers who have been to McKamey/Evolution, "look ahead". The best autocross tapes I have seen have been taken from the right side of the helmet.

Agreed. I'm planning to pick up a bulletcam for this type of use. Mounting is simple - All you need is a little velcro.
