Okay, so I've got an 1986 8-valve GTI bone stock and I think it still runs in HS. The tires I've got on it are Bridgestone Potenza RE930i's. I'm assuming I'd be in HST, but am not too sure. I'm hoping to run on Sunday now that I'm finally employed starting Monday.
It looks like I still have #69 reserved. Anyone have a good source for magnetic #'s locally?

Well welcome back!
Just as I'm thinking about doing some more rally-cross.
Do you want to run for a board position?
How about chief of ...............?

I get mine at

Midwest Sign
45 E Maryland Ave
Saint Paul MN

8-5 M-F
651-489-9999

This is just west of I-35E, west of the K-mart. Sits back off the north side of Maryland in an industrial park.

Any sign-supply company will do. These guys are well up the wholesale chain. I'm sure you can find such a place in any good-sized city.

I use the heavy-duty white magnetic background and black 3M ControlTac film.

I print on my printer at home in Helvetica Bold or similar simple sanserif font and use the outline style. Roughly cut out numbers, leaving a half-inch or so of paper outside the outline. Punch holes in paper numbers with a paper punch.

Lay out the rough-cut numbers on black film. Put a square of scotch tape over each punched hole.

Cut out the numbers with scissors, following the lines on the paper.

Peel off the paper outline and throw it away.

The 3M ControlTac film allows pretty easy repositioning until you really press on it. Even months later, I have found that it can be removed with patience and fingernails. Putting it in the freezer first helps.

Using a white background insures that the numbers will work on any color car. Studies have shown that monochrome reflection contrast is the only thing that really counts. Color-contrast is essentially worthless. The best contrast is, predictably, black and white.

Large magnetic pieces stay on the car better than numbers cut out of magnetic material. I have put large magnetics on cars bridging over rubber trim, and they still stayed on the car at autocross speeds.

Practical numbers are a must in this sport. You can get them either by making them or paying a professional to make them.

The Mazda GLC iceracer/HS killer was sold to a guy who was going to build it up into a Club Rally car. It 's in Texas from what I understand. The 323SE is still running strong with 222,000 on the odo. I won my class at a rallycross in WI last July by a bunch. Paul and myself were talking about bringing the Forzda RX-GT7 iceracer (Mazda RX-7 with a 2.9 liter Ford Ranger GT engine) out until he lost his job and went to computer school. He still has the Neon and A-X tires. Don't know if he sold off the MAC timing bus, though.
I'll have to run with tape or shoe-polish #'s as I'm kinda broke right now after being unemployed for three and 1/2 months. See you tomorrow.

I have black numbers on my white magnetics. Works really well on the Lotus, with the addition of some white masking tape. Get back a ways and you can't see the old adhesive on the magnetic (I really need to remember to clean those) or the tape, and it looks like the numbers are painted on the car.

Combination of what's left of the LSD in the Europa with the hard old tires meant that the car refused to go around the 180s at the MOWOG. Back to reality after doing so well at the LOG autocross.
