Nice pics.

No wonder I didn't have a single cone penalty, I was nowhere near the cones :)

I almost cry when I saw how sharp these pictures get. What camera and lens did you use, Richard?? Please share the setting too if you don't mind!

Professional quality!

if you are looking at a pic, there's a "more info" button (mouse over the pic) and that will pull up EXIF data.

Nikon D80 with I'd guess a 200-400mm lens? 1/125, f18, iso 100

Thanks everyone :)
I have a Nikon D80, with a 70-300 zoom

I found that 1/125 is a good speed for most shots. Setup 100 ISO with auto-aperture. Head on, there is just enough blur to show motion in the tires. The side panning shots are also just blurry enough to show motion.
As for "How did I nail the panning shot?" question.. well, did you see the other dozen that were blurry? :) I'm glad your shot was one that worked. To get it, I followed the car, and made sure that the background I got was in front of me, as I followed the car, I hit the shutter and kept following. Practice and a bit of luck.

BTW, feel free to download and print. On the site, there is a "buy a print" button or something like that. That is smugmug's doing, not mine. I don't get money or credits or anything from that. I just do it for the fun of it.

I'm going to try to bring my DSLR next time and try your settings and techniques. Well, I won't be taking as many as you do as I also need to concentrate on my runs and work assignments.

I just got this set a couple weeks ago (My first DSLR):
canon T2i with 55-250mm IS zoom.

I used Sx10 IS half SLR to shoot a couple from the other thread, and since I set my shutter 1/60 and my aperture can only get as small as f/8, so my shots are mostly overexposed. I was also trying to follow the car too, so I think that affect my camera to focus as my shutter speed is too slow?

Thanks again for the tip!

Proof positive that I look at least 10 feet ahead at all times, however, I could recognize that cone in a line-up if asked.

I guess the wing isn't really that large after all and no I didn't hit that cone, surprisingly.

Great shots, thanks for sharing.

How do I make this large and not just a thumbnail though/

I just found this out today. If you mouse over the image you've attached there should be a brush icon in the upper left. Clicking on that lets you set properties about it, like how big you want it to be.

There might be an easier way but....
When in the gallery view there is and the picture is in view on the right there is a button above it that says "share" click it and select
"get a link", and it brings up a list of links, click the appropriate "copy" button. Paste the link and change [Url]s to [img]s.

It looks like it might only happen in the advanced message editor, not the quick reply? I see it there after I've uploaded the picture with the insert image button. It also might be a pencil, not a brush. I haven't yet played with the manage attachments bit.

I've attached an image of my editor box, showing where I click to get the fancy image options. I've left it a bit smaller so as not to confuse people, but click it for full size. You also have to trust that it makes the image bigger (or preview your post to see that it does), as it won't make the image bigger in the editing area.

1/60 seems a bit slow in my opinion. Since you are already overexposed at f8, go ahead and reduce the speed to 1/125 or 1/250.
My wife has a camera similar to yours, and the focus can be a real hastle. I haven't tried any action shots with her camera, so I don't have much to add.
On this last batch, I focused on a cone, and waited for the car to come to it. A DSLR will help with the timing, the Sx10 will have a significant delay in comparison, but give it some practice, and you should be able to time it right.
The 55-250 will be a great len to try at the track.
To help with the exposure, try to find a corner with the sun at your back. If you can get a neutral background, that will help too.

I'm not familiar with this forum, and how to post pics.
Smugmug allows you to share pictures with different sized links. I think somebody already showed how to do that. (Share -> Get a Link -> choose your size)
I've set it up so you can download the picture to your home computer, and then upload it the way you usually would.

Wow, I'm doing something radically wrong then. I never see the stage where you are making the change. I use the attachement manager and it only lists the picture as an asset. It does not show up in my edit box at all.

I just poked around the attachment manager to see how that might work. Once you have the image in the lower area, clicking the insert inline button in the bottom right looks like it will paste it into the edit box, where you can then alter the size properties.

Also, sorry for jacking the picture thread. Again, cool pics.

Ok guys, here's the trick. Right-click on the picture. Somewhere in the menu that pops up will be an option like "Copy image location" or "Copy image address" or something similar. (NOT COPY PICTURE -- we want the code to the URL of the picture, not the picture itself.) Then, come here to the forums, and put that url in between tags. IE [img]your.image.url.here

Okay, let's just do it this way.

Here is a view of the album, page 38.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk223/Chippy569/Photobucket%20Demonstration/Screenshot2010-05-12at31209PM.png

If I put my mouse over the big picture on the right, the little side bar pops up.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk223/Chippy569/Photobucket%20Demonstration/Screenshot2010-05-12at31217PM.png
(If you want to save the image to your computer, use the "Save Photo" picture on the bottom to download it.)

Now, if I right-click on the picture, a menu should pop up. I am using firefox, but other browsers should have a similar feature. Select "Copy Image Location" or something similar.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk223/Chippy569/Photobucket%20Demonstration/Screenshot2010-05-12at31223PM.png

Now, come to the forum, type "", hit paste, and then type ""
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk223/Chippy569/Photobucket%20Demonstration/Screenshot2010-05-12at31848PM.png

That should do it.

Ted: do these wheels belong to your codriver?

I thought the car looked sick on Saturday, and it's captured so well in this photo. If you ever decide to sell the Miata, I think you should put this pic in the ad. The fun just jumps off the screen!

Thanks for posting these! I need some better looking numbers...

http://rumley.smugmug.com/Cars/20100508-Autocross/DSC3109/862301444_e7Pbz-M.jpg

Derek: for some high quality magnetic numbers, hit up www.izoomgraphics.com. Many on this site use them.

A set of fancy 10-inchers will cost you $60-80, but there are a huge number of choices, and the product is worth the price, IMO. Then again, your paint is so beautiful, maybe you don't want to use magnets!
