Is there another event the on the 20th? One must be a scca member correct?

Should be street prepared PAX, if it's like last year. So the LLN Civic will run in CSP.

What about "Street Touring" classes? Because the PAX index for these classes already reflects the use of street tires, ST, STX, STS, and STU cars will compete on their Street Prepared Index. For example, an ST 1989 Civic Si will compete on the C Street Prepared (CSP) index in the "F" class.

And yes, we'll be there (for the Sunday event too)! The poster looks cool.. nice work.

If people were looking for a good event weekend this would a good one, Bridgestone is great to have at an event let alone hosting one. Should be a great time.

You do not need to be an SCCA member for either of these events. Non-member entry is slightly higher (just like MAC).

For CENDIV on July 31 and August 1, I believe that SCCA membership is required (and according to the Milwaukee SCCA website, advance online pre-registration is also required).

As much as I find this an interesting event, it will likely eliminate one trip to Milwaukee for me. For those of us who run on race tires, the scheduling of this event eliminated one of the two-event Milwaukee weekends that make the trip worth it. :(
(and no, I have absolutely no interest in driving 5 hours to run a DP car on street tires...... :flush:)

ST has allowances that SP doesn't. For instance, aftermarket wings are illegal in SP, and would get you bumped to SM.

You could always co-drive a car on Saturday. After all, the cost per run on a car on street tires is close to nothing. :)

Not necessarily- as long as you follow all of the other Street touring rules you can always run an ST car in SP just by slapping on race rubber in the allowable size of ST (that's the way I've understood in anyways). If I wanted to I could run a big wing on my STX WRX in ESP- as long as I didn't exceed the 245 tire limit. I don't think it would be legal to up my boost though- since I'm following the ST rules. That's my interpretation anyways.

Mostly correct. Here's the exact wording from the Street Prepared rules:
Cars listed as eligible in and prepared to the current national Street Touring (ST) class rules are permitted to compete in their respective Street Prepared classes, with the additional allowance that they may use any tire which meets the requirements of 15.3 and fits on the ST-legal wheels and within the ST-legal bodywork.

But SM still isn't Prepared. Guess one size does not fit all.

Since when was Milwaukee Region not an SCCA club? :?

Since when was Milwaukee Region not an SCCA club? :?

Line of logic:
National Street Tire Challenge isn't an SCCA National Event, AFAIK. The parent club is an SCCA club, but they're offering an alternative event with a different title sponsor (not TireRack).

It might follow that if the event gains popularity, it might branch off into a separate event / series with different "cars to have" in the respective classes.

That's all speculation, but I'm all for supporting street tire events.

Sorry, I'm not following your logic that this isn't an SCCA event. Of course it's an SCCA event - the club sponsoring it is one of the larger & more prominent SCCA Regions in existence, with a Milwaukee Region member currently sitting on the National Solo Events Board (SEB) to boot.

I do agree it's cool to see experiments like this by individual regions. It's a great way to try out new ideas without making a large National commitment to something that's unproven. :)

Sorry, I'm not following your logic that this isn't an SCCA event. Of course it's an SCCA event -

That's not what I said.

It's a National event. But not run with National SCCA classing. PAX isn't an official anything. Of course Milwaukee SCCA is an SCCA group, but the event isn't a National SCCA-type event.

MAC isn't an SCCA anything and we have numerous national SCCA board members.

My point was that it's a smart idea to start "National Street Tire Challenge" under Milwaukee SCCA for branding, but there's nothing that requires it to stay "SCCA" if it gets popular enough to stand alone. There's already a precedence in WAI to have another autocross organization run at Miller Park.

Sorry Charles, I just can't see where you're going with this. Milwaukee SCCA is an SCCA club to it's very core. Thinking the region would purposely create some type of non-SCCA series seems pretty far-fetched to me. If it proves popular enough, I could see the event spawning related events hosted by other SCCA regions. Just from a practical standpoint, what organization bedsides the SCCA could actually pull off a national autocross series anyway? NASA has proven unable or unwilling to do so, and no other organization has the reach.

Sorry for continuing to to lead this thread off-topic. Lets get back to talking about the event itself. Anyone have a competitive street-tired car with an open co-driver seat for this event?

JCN
03-04-2010, 10:49 AM
On topic: I have a spare set of OEM wheels to run TBS in the CR.

Off topic: What makes Nats or Nat Tours popular? Competition, contingency and camaraderie.
National Street Tire Challenge is a good part of the way there. Last year they talked about the event being designed for people not going to Nats (hence the scheduling). This year, I'm thankful that they're allowing Nats-type people to play.

The title of this event would suggest they're trying to be a stand-alone event and not a model for other regions. Or else it'd be "Milwaukee Street Tire Challenge."

If we bring enough MAC members and Chicago Region brings theirs, we could have quite a solid showing.

The real purpose for this event....in my opinion...is to bring awareness to the idea of running Stock class cars on Street Tires. It's called "National" because I think they want everyone to know this is an invite...not a local deal. "Please travel to Milwaukee for this" I have various personal views on Street tire in Stock , but there's no denying that this is a good move for someone promoting this idea. You get a bunch of these going that are well attended by people who travel, and pretty soon people will start to be swayed that there is viability in this idea. It's more than anyone else has ever done for this cause...no one has gone much farther than writing e-mails on forums. So good luck...I find it very interesting, and am looking forward to it myself. (with my SP index)

Agree 100%.

So if in 5 years, this event is very popular with >500 entries and they say to the SEB, "Look, stock classes can be run successfully on street tires." And the SEB says, "Good for you, we're sticking with R-comps..." then what next? It would be a logical splitting point to have a parallel non-SCCA sanctioned series.

People thought LeMons and ChumpCar were silly, but they've exploded in popularity, supporting the notion that you don't have to spend lots of money to have fun in motorsports. I'm hoping that "street tire" autocross catches on as well.

Why not stay right in Milwaukee? There's an event the next day.

Couple of reasons:
I'm going for season points with the Chicago region
I have relatives about 20 minutes from Joliet, so no hotel stay, and usually a very nice dinner
I actually prefer the courses in the chicago region, as they often suit my cars strengths pretty well, although they are starting to feel pretty repetitive.

edit: oh, and chicago is on my way back home. I realize this wouldn't make much sense for all you westerners :P

Was a fun day yesterday! Pat kicking ass despite being saddled with an SP index. Chris DeLay doing the Lucky Lugnut proud. Murph and Meschke trophying. Jocelin as the second fastest woman through the morning and just getting nipped by Mary Bahr and Denise Cashmore on final afternoon runs on the stock OEM Bridgestone RE-070s. Alex Awsumb quitting smoking (everyone check in on him whenever you see him to keep him honest, please), Larry dropping chunks of time. John Mensch driving fast despite having to adjust to setup changes mid-event. I have too much "Spirit Animal" and made a few smoky burnouts on a few runs, but put a clean one in the books to take another round in the Charles-Todd S2000 battle... lost an oil filler cap on course, but thankfully a 91 CRX cap fits just fine (thanks John and Larry!). Co-driving with Todd tomorrow with his tires (and oil filler cap) and our car in the morning and his car in the afternoon for some testing and round three of our S2k challenge. didn't do as well as I had hoped but at least I did better than last year. It was a great confidence booster to be in first even if it was only for a few minutes after my first run :p Only dropping .640 between my first and fastest runs was the killer... seems like a lot of others not as used to street tires dropped a lot more and I just kept losing positions all day. Ah well, better luck next year.
