SCCA Pro Racing returns to Brainerd International Raceway

BRAINERD, Minn. - Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Pro Racing is returning to Brainerd International Raceway when the 2010 Trans-Am Series headlines a race Sept. 4-5 on BIR's new 2.5-mile, 13-turn Competition Road Course.

Details of the event will be announced later, but fans can expect the same thrilling wheel-to-wheel road racing that has made the series so popular over the last 42 years and attracted some of the greatest names in motorsports.

The series features a wide variety of high-performance sports cars, including exotic cars such as the Qvale Mangusta, Panoz Esperante and Jaguar XKR, which won six of the last seven series championships. But fans will also see domestic cars, such as Mustangs, Corvettes and Camaros, as well as imports like Audi, Nissan, Mazda etc.

"We are very excited to have the Trans-Am Series back at BIR," said Gary Curtis, BIR Racing Series Director. "The series has a very colorful and storied history at BIR that dates back to the late 1960’s. We still have a lot of race fans who remember those events and have asked us over the years when we're bringing back Trans-Am Series racing. Well, that time is now."

The last year that BIR hosted a Trans-Am Series event was 1989, but it was an annual attraction for 20 years prior. BIR's 1974 series event, called the Uncola Nationals, attracted 17,000 people. Household names like NASCAR's Ken Schrader and Jimmy Spencer were among those who raced in the series at BIR, as did Indy 500 racers Tom Sneva, Bobby Unser and Al Unser. Actor Paul Newman set a lap record at BIR during the 1977 Uncola Nationals and then won races in 1978 and 1979. He won his first professional race during the 1982 Trans-Am Series race at BIR.

"The Trans-Am Series has played a major role in making BIR what it is today, a world-class racetrack," Curtis said. "It's wide-open racing with high-powered cars that are piloted by extremely talented drivers. And they'll be competing on a very challenging road course that promotes a lot of passing. That's a recipe for some outstanding racing."

BIR was able to attract the series after completing an SCCA track certification, which opens the door for future SCCA events. "We hope that now BIR will become the preferred destination for a wide variety of professional and amateur SCCA events," Curtis said. "We have worked very hard to not only certify the track but also to develop an SCCA training school to provide certification for all levels of drivers to compete in SCCA-certified events."

BIR also uses its road course for instructional purposes, having developed a Performance Driving School for drivers of all skill levels, StreetSmarts, an advanced defensive driving course for teenagers, and SafePursuit, an emergency vehicle operators course for law enforcement.

Now in its 42nd season, Brainerd International Raceway is one of North America's largest race tracks, featuring a world-class quarter-mile drag strip, the 3.1-mile 10-turn Donnybrooke Road Course, the new 2.5-mile 13-turn Competition Road Course, 300 acres for rustic camping, 164 full-service RV sites and 12 on-site condos. The Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals drag race in August is the largest annual motorsports event in the Upper Midwest. BIR is about 120 miles north of the Twin Cities. Check out our new Web site for more information, www.BrainerdRaceway.com, or call the BIR Ticket Office at 218-824-RACE (7223).

Hi Phil, this is the same weekend as the Muscle Car Shootout Drag event. Quite a combination, eh?

"Murph - keep the July 4th weekend open........."

I wanted to be a race driver before I was 40. Maybe I'll run my first race ON my 42nd birthday instead. That would be almost as good. How many days is that for prepping a CRX and taking the two schools needed? Do the ex Donnybrooke/BIR schools count towards an SCCA or NASA license?

The ordinary BIR Schools wouldn't count towards a comp license - but BIR will have an SCCA accredited comp school starting in 2010. It will be priced somewhere between the cost of an SCCA Region-sponsored school and a Skip Barber type school. Gary should have dates for this soon.

The CenDiv SCCA school is always the last weekend in April.

Seems doable to me for Jeff to race on his birthday :-)

During this Trans-am weekend, how many races are there? How long does each race last?

i.e. - if I come up and spectate, what will I be watching all day?

We do not have a detailed schedule in place yet.

I would plan for the main TA race to be Sunday afternoon and probably a hour long. There will be other support races including other Pro Series, a Vintage race and maybe even a Pro-IT race (for Jeff and I).

We are working to make it a full, entertaining schedule.

And if you don't like what's on the road course you can go watch the drag racers. They can run both at once now.

Tom and all-Congratulations on bringing SCCA racing back to BIR. I attended almost every spectator event (Trans-Am, Can-Am, Continental/F5000, SCCA Nationals, and many Regionals, as well as IMSA, Kelly Challenge, and ASA) from the opening of the track in 1968 until the end of SCCA and pro racing at Brainerd, plus VSCR events since that time.

Note the July 4 weekend planned for SCCA Club racing is also a "Show and Go" with shows and drag racing at BIR. One of the goals with the new 13-turn track was to be able to run drag racing events (which we know help pay the bills) and also track events at the same time. It will be interesting to see if BIR management allows spectators to have access to both areas for one entry fee, or if Security will ticket each event by itself and limit interaction between the events.

Cool! Makes me wish I had a "race" car I could bring to a school like that. I'm sure that'd be a lot more fun than HPDEs.

Matt,

The good news (aside from hauling and storage) is that a track car is about as expensive as the mods on many road cars. I seem to see good cars under $4000 fairly often. (I have less than $1500 into that CRX.) These stick out in my head:

http://www.racingjunk.com/category/86/Production/post/1664677/ACR-dodge-Neon-Race-Car-Factory-Production-.html

http://www.racingjunk.com/category/84/Improved_Touring/post/1705463/-985-VW-Golf-GTI-Bilstien-VW-Cup-Car.html

I don't remember if there is still a NEON race car for sale on this forum too.

Or just have a streetable track car so you don't have to haul it; A VW, Honda, ??? with a fourpoint bar, seats and belts.

I remember Pro Race weekends as being a three ring circus. Maybe World Challenge, maybe an S2000 race, and some other hijynx as well as the headliner race. Probably no rollover contests or trailer races though. It would sell tickets, but I'll bet they don't do it.

Was that your jag parked near the luther auto cars?

This was the first time iv ever been able to sit down and actually watch racing. My friend had a great battle ( jon b in the black vee vs. Jeff e in the mgb, and an eau claire native in another mg)so I was really excited to see that. In the final straight jon took them both for 4th.

I have a handful of pictures I will post in a bit. Just with a PNS so nothing extroardinary
