seriously look into NASA.... www.nasamidwest.com
I have been to and instructed at a number of high speed events.....and bar none NASA has the BEST program taking people in at all stages of expirence and bringing them up as far as they want to go.....they have four levels of lapping, great instructors, then you goto Time Trials (think auto-x/lapping hybrid, essentially it is qualifying), then when ready you graduate to a real door-2-door/bumper-2-bumper racer.

Yeah, not sure a bunch of F-bodies are what I want to share the track with...
Thanks, I'll make sure to check out some of their events this year.

I wouldn't be so quick to stereotype.
They actually do a REALLY good job! And most of the cars are NOT F-bodies. I've gone to their events to both spectate and drive my Stealth TT.
They give you a lot more freedom (don't need an instructor all day, ride alongs for spectators, etc) then some of the other options (BMW club) but still are conscious about safety.
Yeah, not sure a bunch of F-bodies are what I want to share the track with...
They probably feel the same way about Bimmer Boyz. :p

I was just thinking from a perspective of annoying each other on track. They'll be faster in the straights, we'll be faster in the corners, so since the passing zones are always in straights, I'll spend half the day backing off mid corner or just after a corner.
I liked that about the BMW club, most cars were about the same in most places on course.

A quick pit usually takes care of that.

A quick pit usually takes care of that.
Yeah, that's:
A) Not good for your car, a cool down lap is good.
B) Annoying, I'm not there to practice my ace "pit" maneuver.
Especially at an open lapping event like this, without much structure, this would be happening constantly. It was bad enough at BIR's school with lots of different cars, I can't imagine a club dedicated to F-bodies. I didn't know what I was missing until I ran with the BMWCCA.
Racing with cars of different strengths can be a lot of fun, if you're actually allowed to pass in the sections you're faster. If not, you have to wait for the guy ahead of you to realize how long you're on his ass through a turn, when he's likely pretty occupied by something else, isn't required to have an instructor, and can easily pull away once he's going straight. (and you've had to slow down for him on corner exit)
It's easy to say just slow down early, give him some space before the turn, then use the exit speed to beat him at the beginning of the straight, but with a 100+ HP differential, he'll likely just think you were not on him before, won't really be forced to give the pass, and won't. Doing this a few times can be fun. Constantly would be annoying.
Maybe I'm just a stereotyping judgemental ******* about F-bodies, maybe this group has it totally figured out and have found a revolutionary new way to convince drivers of when to give the point-by, but I'm guessing not.
This has been my "Alex Lowe Post of the Week". (tm)

They do run groups by experience level and how "aggressive" of a driver you are. Most of the cars that show up do tend to be higher horse power (at least relative to a non-M BMW) but I had a buddy take his Integra up a few times and never had an issue and he never complained. It was fun watching him and a Ford Lightning dice it up!
They only allow passing in certain sections of the track and when I ran with them I had no problems with people holding me up. Everyone was quick to allow passing in the run group I was in. Road America has 3 major straights so if you're out horse powered there will be plenty of opportunity to let them by and generally you won't be able to constantly catch up to them in the corners either.
If you're looking for track time this is a good group of people to run with. They get a lot of regulars that come back to this event and at least as of a couple years ago most people were super nice.

I found out today that RA is allowing F-body another month to get their minimum registration. That's great news as I'm sure the holidays slowed things down a bit. They're almost half way.

The list you are referencing has not updated for weeks. I'm not even on that list and I paid two weeks ago. Talking with F-B yesterday I heard that they have several more reg's coming in and with the three more in our group...I optimistically say almost half.

Do you have to drive a Porsche to go lapping with Nord Stern?

That was the current count as of 12/28/09. They said they had two additional registrations since then. But if you're liberally rounding, then I guess so....

Correct, plus you are supposed to be a PCA North America member and a Nord Stern member which both involve paying dues.

I wonder if BIR's "Driver's school" would count as a surrogate for the Nord Stern "Driver's training."

Possible, but I would just spend the weekend doing the first fling at BIR. You will get the training out of the way then. I remember even though I instructed with Suburban Corvettes (including a guy in a Gallardo) I still had to go through the training with Nord Stern. It is not bad and a good way to meet the club members. Tyro usually goes up there.
(Edit posted before seeing Tyro's response)
Isn't the first fling the weekend of MOWOG 1/2?

No idea. Personally First Fling would be more fun. They also have a Fast Fling in June usually that you can get the training also. Nord Stern has a lot of track junkies so it is a good group to get involved with.

I might just go to the Friday Nord Stern driver's training at BIR, do M1/2 at Valleyfair, then back to BIR Monday. I could probably leave the autocross brake pads on the car Friday-Sunday and swap to track pads Monday.
They're up to 42 people registered with about a month left to get near 80...
Up to 51 people each day.

Correction to my previous post:
Nord Stern: "Just catching up on emails as we have been out of town. We do allow non PCA members at our track events, they just have to pay more. We have a non-member rate which is usually about $50.00 more per event. Prior to doing any Driver's Education event they must attend a day of Driver's Training just like PCA members. It is mandatory that all participants sign a PCA waiver whether a member or not. Ed - you are correct that the Nord Stern membership is optional. "
There is a www.NorthstarBMW.org at Brainerd in the middle of May. I know Craig Lovold and team are going there to prepare for Chump Car.
You edited your post, but the previous version stated that you had to own a Porsche to become a PCA member. But then you could run a different car on the track.
So technically, you could gain membership with something like a Cayenne and run a Honda at the events, right?
Some of their events fill up with PCA members, so looking at options.
Here in Elkhart Lake with Jocelin, Kevin, Gary W and Jeff Janes!
Pictures tomorrow...

Damn, color me jealous.
It was a really fun time! The F-Body club really put on a top notch event. The instructors were very supportive and excellent quality.
Kevin was blazing and hunting down Z06s. Jocelin did great, I did okay. :D Kevin's friend Joey really did well and it was so much fun hanging out with them! I have more "casual" shots on our personal cameras and phones.
Ask Gary about "green vaseline..."
We would totally run again with this club anytime! Hoping to make it back next year.
The only issue...
Our car blew a hole in the oil pan... still not sure if it was because of the engine dying or because of the spot welded baffle on the aluminum pan itself...
Will know more tomorrow.

What a blast on a really fast track. The instructors were fabulous, we all improved with every session. The only real drama came as I blasted through a wall of white smoke while chasing a corvette and a CTS-V at 110mph. Unfortunately, the smoke (and associated oil slick) was generated by Charles blowing the hole in his engine. Before this, the s2000 with either Charles or Jocelin at the wheel was quick. Charles was also able to definitively confirm that a supercharged four is stronger than a normally aspirated six between turns five and six (thanks again for "lifting"(?) after waving me by ;-)).
