Registration is now open for the CVSCC "Grand Prix West" event:
http://www.myautoevents.com/pls/mae/frmEventDetail.Show?psevent_id=10650
Please note two things:
This event is being held at the West campus location, not the big lot on Clairemont. Use of the big lot on Clairemont is on hiatus until Fall '10 due to noise complaints from neighboring residents. :(
Even though there are very few neighbors near the West campus, there will be a noise limit in place for the 9/13/09 event. Any vehicle exceeding 95 dBA will be asked to cease their runs, if the car cannot be quieted down. Sound measuring equipment will be in place to enforce this rule. If you suspect your car may not meet this requirement, please prepare your vehicle accordingly prior to attending.
Use of the big lot on Clairemont is on hiatus until Fall '10 due to noise complaints from neighboring residents. :(
It's so nice to know that people care enough to spoil the fun of others. God bless them.

I feel compelled to point out that CVSCC voluntarily decided this. There were numerous complaints from residents to both the police dept. and the school. Rather than be told we can't ever use the place, we decided not to fight the issue and to give the residents a break for a while. Use of the lot will return, just not until the neighbors have had a chance to cool off a bit.
Everyone at the school are currently strong supporters of what we do, but given the way politics play around there, that support could easily vaporize if the fit were to really hit the shan.

I think CVSCC did the best thing in being pro-active
The West Campus is better than losing the site.

Yes, the West lot. which is workable.
I'll have to start over with the course design, which was already done. :(

Correction to the previous announcement regarding noise restrictions at the CVSCC autox next month:
Sound measuring equipment will be used during the event, however the CVSCC is no longer planning to enforce a specific dBA limit for this event.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Please don't go out of your way to make your car even louder, but there's no need to schedule an emergency visit to the exhaust shop. ;)
Question about passengers:
Can anyone ride with anyone? I think I remember that from last year.
We have a few friends that might make their debut.

No. CVSCC uses the same insurance as MAC.
Besides, this is a Met Council Series event, and to quote the rules:
6.3 Passengers are not permitted during timed runs.
That has to be my #1 least favorite thing about MAC events. :flame:

Yeah, I would really love to take my girlfriend with on REAL competition runs, but more people means more weight...
...And that I would have to run the DD over the race car.
Im usually pretty spent by the time she would get to ride along for the free runs, so its not much of a ride. But oh well..I just wish I had a passenger seat to plop an instructor in.

Not many clubs allow passengers to ride along during competition runs. :?
I guess we could become an SCCA club and increase our insurance costs by about 50% - which would have to be passed on to participants.

Bummer about a never ending fur-ball of ride alongs, but we DO have fun runs for that, which can in a way be easier for the co-pilot in that they can still have 1/2 a day or so to do what they wish, and show up to the event site around 3pm, catch a little of the action, and get in on a ride, time permitting. If we run late and no fun runs, a quick phone call to the co-pilot saves them a trip.
Maybe the insurance old codger in me thinks this, but I prefer more reasonably priced events, and with something as unique as what we do, I don't expect companies are lining up to insure events like ours, so maintaining a good working relationship at reasonable prices may be viewed as a pain when in gets in the way of an idea like unlimited ride alongs, but in the big picture of keeping on doing what we all enjoy doing, and keeping it affordable, this may be a little like a 95dbA limit on the cars- a bummer for some, but needed to "insure" that we can keep on with our hobby.

Not to mention paying for the President's high salary.
We have unlimited ride-alongs and more runs than you will ever need at our T&T events.
It is what it is. MAC does some special things and is a great club. There are special circumstances around our lot rentals and our insurance.
We put on events with 150+ entrants and six runs. That's pretty rare.
No ridealongs is still one of my least favorite things.
50% increase in insurance is approximately an extra $500-$1000 per event?
I suppose not everyone would be willing to spend the extra $5-$10 per entry fee.
Out of regional clubs that allow ridealongs.
The SCCLaC events are $25.00 for SCCA members with a current membership card, $35.00 for nonmembers. I understand that their lots are cheaper to rent and of smaller size / quality than our large lots.
WAI (not an SCCA club): Entry Fee: $30.00, Non Members: $40.00. I think they get a good deal on Miller Park rental.
Milwaukee SCCA: $30 for annual SCCA member pre-registration
$35 for annual SCCA member onsite registration
$45 for non-member/event membership onsite registration
DMVR (Iowa): SCCA Members - $25.00
Non-Members - $35.00 (Includes Weekend SCCA Membership)
Compared to MAC:
MAC: Advance Registration:
$20 MAC members
$30 Non-members
Note: Online registration closes at 12:00 AM Eastern time, on the Registration Deadline.
Day of Event:
$25 MAC members
$35 Non-members
Like I said, it is what it is. I'm not saying that it should be any different. Just saying I wish it were.
What about ride alongs for X-class?
MNbiker
08-18-2009, 11:26 AM
What about ride alongs for X-class? The Met Council Autocross Rules and MAC Supplemental Rules don't currently include an exception for ride-alongs in any class, during timed runs. I believe we have allowed ride-alongs for X Class vehicles on a few occasions in the past. Not many people sign up for X, so the issue doesn't come up very often. It's certainly something that could be proposed for either set of rules for 2010.

Hmm. No trophies to be given, but it might still be hard to sell as a non-timed run when the runs are being timed and the results published. So X cars show up on the Pax list?
I would be in favor of not publishing the X times and just showing them on the display. That way it'd be consistent with fun runs and Test and Tunes.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I don't think class plays into it. I'm pretty sure it boils down competitive event = no passengers.
I believe Steve addressed it in his post above. X class does matter because you're effectively removing yourself from the competition... a la Fun Run... Except in the middle of the event.

Per the current rules, X Class times are recorded & published. Note: X receives a PAX factor of 1.

I was totally disgusted by both the sheer volume of some of the cars and the horrible farm-truck sound that came out of some of them. Buy some mufflers guys cause that deafening "BLAAAAAAAAAAT!" sound is not good! You can get 95% of the performance benefit with a good aftermarket catback and at 50% of the volume.... as a bonus you actually end up with exhaust that produces more than one note too.
I brought my son with me to CVTC and tried to enjoy the fun with him in a lawn chair but we ended up leaving after just 20 minutes because of the ridiculous noise level.
Just stupid loud and totally uncalled for at a city parking lot competition.
Glad to hear there will be some noise police in the future. Hopefully the Clairemont lot will be available in the future in spite of total lack of respect shown by a few people...

I have to say I take offense at you saying a few people showed a total lack of respect. Especially without even knowing who these people are or what contributions they have made to the club and the sport.
I was at this event. The event where the complaints occured was the Solo Pro Advanced Driving School. This was not your standard event and each car was getting more runs in then normal. Many of the drivers attending this event have purpose built autocross cars that are used solely for this purpose.
Your self-described parking lot event is basically what almost all autocross events are run on currently around the country
The loudest car at the event was slightly over 100db which is certainly louder than the proposed 95db. But a far cry from what I would call ridiculous.
As to the performance benefits being almost equal with a full catback system, from a flow persepctive perhaps but certainly not from a weight perspective. In a low horsepower car weight is everthing.
By the way my car was at 80db during this event.

How old are you? I think you were having a "Brain F..t" , when you wrote this.
Are you the same person that wrote this?:
" Great time
I knew this would be fun, but I had an absolute blast! This was my first autocross and I was very impressed with size and fun factor of the track. I pictured something much smaller and slower and it was great to work up some speed out there. Granted I stunk it up, but I had fun doing it and learned a few things along the way.
Maybe I had low expectations but the 4 run thing didn't bother me a bit. The legistics of 150 cars running 30 seconds apart with almost 2 minute runs is pretty crazy. Then you put timing problems and reruns on top of that and I am not suprised it took all day. Like someone mentioned before just the chance to see all the neat cars there and talk to the other owners was just as fun for me as running. The social aspect is definately a big draw for me as well and I will definately be joining as a member for next season.
The weather was perfect, nobody got hurt, everybody I talked to was having a good time, I'd say it was a good day!
A big thanks to all who made this event possible! "

Honestly, you could have made that statement a little better.
That said, yes there are a few cars in the club that are/were obnoxiously loud. I won't comment on sound quality, as that's just opinion, but volume wise, there are a few cars (mine included) that need better mufflers. If for nothing else, to save the corner workers ears.
There is at least one person that has already done something about it.

Sound control is getting more and more to the top of the list of things to do for many clubs. Get used to it, we already know it's coming.
The main issue with the Eau Claire Events is that we asked too much of the good neighbors. Three days solid...THAT was the problem, not necessarily the noise IMHO. I have a police training lot near my house. The engines are quiet....it's the screeching tires that I hear at my house. Three days of that and I would be pissed too frankly. It's good to quiet things down a little, but I guarantee you the complaints would still come if you did it for three days in a row. Quiet engines or not.
Hopefully, we can retain this site by not only tightening up engine sound limits, but by also being good enighbors and limiting our activities to one day a couple times a year.

Agreed 100%. I had some 2nd and 3rd thoughts about this 3 day thing when it was initially scheduled. Perhaps we need to be a little more respectful and have only 1 day events at this site, with reasonable sound limits, and this will be the happy medium that we all, drivers and neighbors, can live with.

I've read the transcripts of the noise complaints. The primary issue was not the noise itself, it was the multiple days of noise.

So currently there are 23 people signed up. I know that not being at the big lot does weigh in on our decision-making.
If there are only 35 people going to the event, how does that change the schedule of the day?
More runs? Guaranteed fun runs?
With so few people, are there going to be "breaks" between heats or a lunch break for setup changes so that we can do a little test and tuning?
At the SCCLaC events with about that number of people, it's rapid fire work-run. Sometimes with a break for lunch.

No idea, I've never been a part of organizing that small of an event. I'm hoping we'll get at least 50+ people but it's looking a bit slim.

The surface is much newer and more grippy, and the size is about 30% larger than Midway. Rectangle rather than a square.

The west campus was an excellent site last time it was used. Runs were quite a bit longer than we usually have at Midway. Do you know if there will be food available at the lot again this year? That was a big plus last time. If so, I hope entrants will support the group selling burgers, chips, pop, etc.

 There weren't any cars that were THAT loud. I think you are being a bit dramatic about how loud some of the cars are/were. You have to remember you are going to an automotive racing event, it may be a bit noisier than watching cars in the walmart parking lot.
