View Full Version : Cen-Div ROCKS!
Lots of fun at Cen-Divs today. Rain in the first heat. Some people on too new or too old tires. Cyborgs, aliens, and mere mortals. Five runs on day #1, more to come tomorrow! Team One Out killing it in a good way. Brandon beating Fiedler. Andres in the go-fast booster seat. DP leading XP, no SSM cars, Red Eye Beer and TAG-sponsored Beer Walks.

Looks like you guys are having almost to much fun.
Sadly I'll be missing the DCTC event today- dad had some things that needed to be done, and when your 80 yr old dad wants a day, you give it to him. I got Phil to be me, so the event is covered.
Charles: how soon till you get rid of that Audi SUV tow vehicle and get a proper machine, one that says "Prevost" across the front and back? And what up with the Miata? You have several S2K's to choose from if you need an auto cross car.
Are there any links to day 1 results? It'd be cool to see how everyone is doing.
Brandon: Whoa dude! Nice runs. Keep it up on day 2 and be the man!
How are Lee and The Stig doing? And the Heidi's?
I'll be able to check the thread later in the day- MORE RESULTS PLEASE!
Or if any of you have my phone#, give me a ring.

Nice driving from Brandon, .173 off the 2 day STU win, and quickest STU time on day 2. Way to go man!!
Congrats to Darryl and Neal, Pax'ed 4th and 5th.

In a quick review, looks like MAC drivers and those adopted/claimed as our own took 17 first and second spots, and 10 third and fourth spots. Looks like everyone brought some game- Big "D" in a borrowed car laying down the smack, Brandon entering at the last second and being second by less than .2 tenths! Glad you went? Ryan with a strong run in the EBS, the list goes on and on.
Way to go everyone!

Funny things that happened on the way home.
Saw literally 20 cops in speed traps on the way through Wisconsin.
Went to a rest stop along the way.
Cop was there. Pulls next to us and rolls down his window.
Cop: "Excuse me. What's SCCA?"
Murph: "The Sports Club Car of America."
Cop: :?
Murph: "We autocross."
Cop: :?:?
Me: "Here, I have video."
>Shows video of the Wrolson Wracing STX-mobile.
Cop: "Oh, he passed by a little while ago."
Us: "Please don't pull anyone with an SCCA sticker over."
Also along the way, woman with a flat tire. By the time we realized what was going on, we were half a mile past.
We pass by a minivan also with a flat tire. This time, we use our autocross skills and backside the rumble strips and back up along the highway.
They had a flat and a spare, but no jack and no tire iron that actually fit the lug nuts.
Murph jumps out with his impact wrench and breaker bar, I grab the race jack. They get a MAC pit crew and the family was

The FM Crue had a good time, but got to much sleep. The Best Western was cheap and crappy. The pizza and beer (thanks pat) on Saturday night hit the spot.
I got lucky that the FM field had a subpar weekend. The courses were a lot of fun, but only gave the FM cars 2 options for driving it. Powerslide or Coast! Powerslide was the fastest since you could stay on the gas a lot longer and dig through corners. I feel like I am doing the wrong thing when driving that way, but you have to do what the cars wants to do. Still a lot to learn in the FM car and need to get it done in 3. I improved my times by 1.5 seconds on run 4 & 5 over both days. I found that I drive my best after I botch part of the course and get upset become hyper focused and very aggressive
So anyone have any "Hokus Pokus Focus" spells and "Be Aggressive" pills?

Matt and Charles
I saw that you had stopped and was wondering what happened. We were in the fast lane with the trailer so we had no hope of stopping. We radio'd back to Keith to tell him you were stopped between mile mark 104 and 103. By the time he got there you were long gone. Cool that you could help and better yet you didn't have any problems.

The BMod crew did not have nearly as much fun as the FMod crew. On Saturday Muskrat came back after his first run and said the car was over steering a bunch, so I made a sway bar change went out and proceeded to loop it, twice! A "bunch of over steer" must mean that the back end is way faster then the front and has no intention of waiting around for that slow front end to go through the corner! I'll try to post up the video, it's rather entertaining. So we spent the whole day dialing out rear bar and finally adding front tire pressure to make it better.
Put together a plan on Saturday night (wouldn't want to work on the car after a couple of drinks, would we Keith!). Sunday morning came bright and clear and with plan in hand I started work on the car. We had decided to start the day with the settings we had finished with for the sway bar and tire pressure and drop a little toe out of the car. Set up the strings and check the toe measurements and I had 3/16 out, on each side, ouch! No wonder the car was so unsettled! I reset to the 1/8 inch total and had high hopes for the day. Muskrat headed out for his first run taking it pretty easy until he had a little heat in the tires. About half way through he said the car was feeling good so he started pushing it harder and was feeling really good, but then he lost power! They started pushing the car out of the way when he got it started and drove it back. We looked everything over and couldn't figure it out so I figured I would take it out and see what happened. Got to the starting line, they waived me off, reved it up let the clutch out and it died and wouldn't restart. Turns out the battery was low and couldn't keep the car running. So after trying unsuccessfully to install a replacement battery we called it a day. Thanks to the FMod crew who helped trying to get us back out there.
Even with all the issues we ran into with the car, Milwaukee was great. Watching some amassing runs, Tim Aro taking top PAX spot, then on his next two runs droping his time again and then again, amazing! And Darryl Wrolsen jumping in Jone's DSP and rocking the house, finishing 1st in class, 4th in PAX! Ryan Etheridge cone'ng away the class win, Brandon Ranvek finishing 2nd in STU, John Mensch taking STX, great fun! Alignment Guy beer walks, Red Eye Brewing taste testing, Pizza Man pizza (anyone else notice the tattoo's on the gentlemen serving?), and all the great people to chat with. What a great time!

laziness is the mother of... work? I just didn't want to do a bunch of walking back and forth. =]
I felt the same way, the line between "stick" and "slither" and "slide" seemed almost invisible to me this weekend. My fastest (raw) runs involved sliding like hell through all the elements in crazy un-smoothness. When I got it to a level that was smooth, it was godawful slow. Adding oversteer allowed the back end to slide as much as the front end was, which was better, but still not pretty.
I have a theory that I'm in the bumpstops in the front, but will require a little experimenting and then a strut rebuild to address. bah.
My driving notwithstanding, I had a really fun weekend. The event ran nice without being hectic, the weather was good, and the company was great!
Shane apparently got the best of me for the weekend by .004 seconds! I didn't realize it was that close, but you can be sure it'll be the last time *that* happens! :p

Someone needs to keep me up on which events are "Beer Walk" events because I don't follow the out of town schedule. I gave Matt the beer money twice before, but I forgot this time so Shane Donahue helped me out.
Jeff, Beer walk events are pretty much any 2-day event run with the SCCA, as the course is always setup for sunday on saturday night. it's just a matter of who's going.
Looking at the calendar on my desk quick, it looks like the next big beer walk event will be the Mid-Divs in Lincoln. Perhaps you should team up with Washburn next time, and order in some Red Eye!
Speaking of Washburn and Red Eye, Thanks a ton for bring such quantities of tasty, tasty brew! big props to red eye, everything i've had from them is AWESOME!
This whole week with the stig has been really interesting. i purchased a set of used wheels 2 weeks ago, and was so excited, as now i could have options. lee ordered in a set of the Kumhos, and the plan was to mount them early in the week, and scrub them in with some regular driving, to be atleast slightly prepared for this weekend. When we went to mount the tires, one of the wheels was pretty badly bent. Crap. so i'm thinking i'm screwed, and will have to sacrafice one of the dunlop shrouded wheels to mount the kumhos, but really don't want to, because i know the outcome will be that it rains, and i will be screwed. last min wed night lee brought up precision wheel repair in hopkins, about 15 min from my office.
i called them first thing in the morning on thrusday, begging, pleading. i was able to drop the wheel off at noon on thurs, and they returned to me a straight weel powder coated and ready to rock friday at 1. threw it in to the back of the suby, and headed out.
put the new wheels/tires on the car in the parking lot the night before. made a beer run, and came back. that was the entirety of their scrub in, and boy did it show. First two runs for both me and lee were atrociously sloppy and loose. 3rd runs were better, but still loose. dialed in some tire pressure changes, and things started to hook up. by each of our 5th runs, everything was pretty good, but still gettign faster.
day two started out alot better, and things still kept getting faster, but... we ran low on fuel. i've run dozens of events at a quarter tank and not had a problem. the tight right hander, and getting back on the gas hard there proved that the wrx has a fuel slosh issue. steve g and lee managed to round up some fuel in a hurry, and we got 2 more gallons in the tank. that was just enough to make it go away for 1 run each. i still squeaked out a faster run on the 5th run, but i can't help but think i lost 1-2 tenths due to that stupid fuel starve.
i'm still stoaked that the stig and murph's bwm seems to have swapped their standard positions, and i hope we can continue the trend :rockon
even with the tires and the fuel starve though, it felt like the suby was slithering quite well :D
Note to Self: buy 4 Gallon gas can, fill with prem at big events.

ugh... My first time there and Milwaukee chewed me up and spit me right out. I've just never driven a course like that! I'm used to maybe 2 or 3 challenging spots on a course but that course was just one after the other. And that super fast section through the middle?!? OMG, I was lifting everywhere no matter how hard I tried to force myself not to. No cones or spins all weekend was the result, but so were some pretty lackluster times...
Either way, it was a good time at least. Thanks again Mark for bringing my wheels/tires and other crap, and of course thanks again Matt for the coDrive. That car is a freakin' blast I just couldn't adjust to it as fast as I needed to. Beer and Pizza saturday night was amazing too! We left around 7ish and I was in bed by 8 :D
see you ALL there for the national street tire championship in a month!

....... but... we ran low on fuel. i've run dozens of events at a quarter tank and not had a problem. the tight right hander, and getting back on the gas hard there proved that the wrx has a fuel slosh issue. ........ that stupid fuel starve.
Note to Self: buy 4 Gallon gas can, fill with prem at big events.
At least you can run @ a quarter tank- anything less than 1/2 tank in mine I get fuel starve. Happened in the same spot as you (3 of the 5 runs).

Half tank? I'd kill to be able to run with only half a tank. In the RS, I need to run 5/8 tank at a minimum, or else any sustained (or high grip) right hander will leave me sputtering. Okay, the engine will be sputtering; I'll be swearing. Great job getting as close to John as you did, Mike! At least Darryl was off beating up on some other class for a change.

Well I had a wonderful time running with the STS crew. OK, Charles and Andres aren't officially STS, but we'll claim 'em for this weekend. I showed up with a radically changed chassis setup. Charles was kind enough to come along for the ride and help debug the new setup. I was really happy to see how well the crew drove. Charles and Andres had a great battle going and I could see the light bulbs turning on for Larry as he started testing the limits of his car.
The beer tasting and pizza "banquet" on Saturday night were a lot of fun too.
I also saw the newlyweds on the trike on my way home. They looked to be having as much fun as we were.

Great weekend in Milwaukee… Great see all the regulars + a few new folks…
Steve’s car is the sharpest of sharp tools…
John did a great job in STX… Larry was quick for his first time in the car…
I’m told the STX bimmer was the loudest car, 109db, ouch…
Steve Wynveen’s course(s) ROCKed…
Neal,
When you pickup that Sawsall on the way home grab parts for a non-sunroof, 2.8ltr BMW motor, a built one that is, piggyback, bondo, paint and 18 weekends this winter…
FWIW the STX bimmer runs right down on empty...

Awesome driving this weekend by Darryl, b****slapped me into another time zone. BTW, you might want to read the fineprint on the contract. The suicide watch is off now and upon reflection I thought the courses rocked, very challenging. Still not sure what I couldn't figure out but I had fun, especially ripping around the middle section of the course.
Lots of good battles all around the MAC group too. Good food, great beer.

Great fun with some great folks once again. Had a good time running with all the STX folks (less Darryl, but it looks like he managed OK off in the other class...) again. It's always fun to hang with everyone. I had a lot of fun, and Larry did a great job in his first ride in the WW machine. Not bad for a guy that hasn't competed in a rear driver in what, 5 years? Great job Larry. I could go on and on about all the great battles that went on, but I'm at work, so I should cut it short. Thanks everyone that made it for making it, and for making it a great happening.
And even though I did have one wardrobe malfunction, I try to limit those that it might effect (You're welcome Steve...)

I wish this had been a better weekend for me but what can ya do.
GREMLINS! :flame:
We got a half way through our runs on Sat and then the car would just sputter under power. We checked our connections and settings but everything looked OK. We tried a couple more times but could only idle around course after the first turn.
After my issues at the Peru National tour, well, I'd just had enough, so I packed up and went home. I am bummed that I missed out on the festivities but I was too far gone to let it go and enjoy myself.
So I get home and start thinking about what it could be. So I figure that I should start simple and cheap - replace the fuel filter.
For those who don't know, on a 1990 Miata, it is located under the car by the rear axle. Go get the part and start changing it out, gas dripping into a pan from the gravity, and I am trying to get the hose off the top inlet (the bottom is already off) when I twist juuuust right so the bottom hose kisses the bottom inlet and shoots a nice, tight stream of gasoline into my left eye.
Run into the house, flush out my eye for ten minutes then spend the next two hours in the ER. The good news, I am fine. The bad news, they want you to pay your portion of the visit ON THE SPOT. Just remember to bring your credit card when you need emergency care.
So I drained out about a gallon of gas during this adventure. Get it put back together, turned off the ECU auto-tuning and it runs fine for about ten minutes and start sputtering again. Look at the fuel gauge, and now it is below E.
Run to the gas station and put about 4 gallons in and start sputtering home. When I get back to the house it starts running a bit better so I go for a little drive around the neighborhood and it starts running fine. So I keep driving, pushing a bit here and there to see if it sputters but so far so good.
Then I get brave and decide to let it run and take it on the freeway. I stomp on it and it runs like a top. I went back and forth on 494 a few times and I had no issues. I drove for over an hour and now it seems OK.
Aaagghhhgg. So I guess it was a clogged fuel filter and/or bad gas and/or the ECU setting to adaptively tune or all of the above.
I will probably be taking the car for evening drives so I can reassure myself that I have actually fixed the darn thing.
Ya know, I did take off that green Milwaukee event sticker after I fixed the fuel filter, hmmmm.....

You'll get 'er fixed, some how. Just get to as many events as you can between now and Nats to work out the kinks!
As far as my weekend was concerned, I just can't believe how freaking awesome the courses were. Right up there with the best ever. Fast and flowing, with a few tough sections to keep you on your toes.
The RX8 loved it, even with old tires. We were trying some new shock settings that we haven't run before, and though it did create a couple new issues it seems faster and more balanced overall.
With no competition in BS or BSL, TOO decided not to use our new Hoosiers, so we started the event on 45-run Hoosiers, and with four drivers we knew we would be putting 20 runs on them each day .
It definitely took a few extra runs on Saturday to get them good n' sticky, but they came in surprisingly well. Wouldn't have done very well if it were only three runs, but by the 3rd run the car was working really well. I really can't say for sure that new tires would have been much faster. Sunday was a bit of a different story. Starting 4th heat Sunday with 75 runs on them, the tires were definitely "off". But I'm still very happy with the results, and I think Ivan would have been too if he hadn't coned his good runs :x . The times don't show it due to his Sunday cones, but Ivan and I had the closest battles we've had in a while on both days. That was fun! Katie and Gretchen seemed to be having fun battling back-n-forth too.
It was so much fun to hang out with everyone, and that was just about the most fun I've ever had announcing. STX and STU were THE classes of the weekend to watch. We need to make sure that Darryl/Steve and Harry/Tim are farther apart in grid though. It sucks having both cars on course at the same time...which one do you watch??

Wow, thanks Neal! But, now I'm blushing.
When we first threw down the course on Friday night, I wasn't so sure about it. I always try to throw in some new looks for those same maneuvers we see over and over (the northwest corner was one of those new looks). I think it even threw my psyche for a loop, but it drove just like I intended. I rather enjoyed on Saturday morning how many groups of course walkers would get to that corner and just stop and stare for a while, or debate how to drive it.

p.s. Murph maybe we need to call ourselves "Team Good Samaritan"? On the Friday before M1/2 last year I had all my tools/jack/autox stuff loaded in the Miata 'cause I was staying at a friend's house near VF for the weekend. I heard a coworker talking on the phone to her husband saying she had a flat; I offered to help and thanks to the floor jack & brearker-bar had her tire changed in ~5 min.

It was an interesting corner for sure. I felt like saturday was easy enough to figure out, but man sunday was a mystery. I feel like the "right" way to take that corner was the "CP" way, jam it in and powerslide out!
I spent some time watching that corner during heat 1, and I saw a few people parking it and managing an ok exit, and some people carrying speed and ending up late to the wallom, but nobody that I really thought did it well. I tried to strike a balance, but it was a tough balance to find, and I don't think I did it well all sunday.

I loved the different "visuals".
I think Pat nailed it on that one. It was a very right-brain design. Call it inspired by the "impressionistic period" of course design history. Nothing was quite square or in a nice line, and everything was twisted or off-center. Very few cones conveniently placed on the real apex of the corner, and nothing drove in a "textbook" fashion. It seems like whenever course designers try to get that all creative, they just get all choppy. But if you read it properly on the course walk, and then really looked ahead well on the run, it really drove fast, smooth, and flowing. Even the two tight sections allowed more speed than I thought possible.
It really required you to THINK about the line. Everywhere. After 12 years of autocrossing, I bet I could have someone else from TOO walk the course for me, and simply come back and report the elements and the angles/distances between them ("first you do a 6-cone, 20-pace slalom, then 100ft into a 90-deg sweeper with a Chicago box after that...etc). I could probably drive it at 90% the first try without even looking ahead very well. But that wouldn't have worked on this course. None of the elements were "unusual" or "non-standard" elements, but still somehow almost none actually drove like they normally should. I don't think I'd know how to talk someone through that course.
The Chicago Box on the Southeast corner was the best example. It was placed at a really odd angle and twisted just enough that it combined with the elements before and after to become a thread-the-needle, medium/high-speed sweeper...didn't drive at all like any Chicago Box I've ever seen. I thought there was a chance it could be a unique experience on the course walk, but it still totally threw me for a loop on my first run.
Not saying I dislike a good Karen Babb course now and then, but Steve: When are we going to see "Course design by Windscreen" on a Nationals map???

And a Jeff Fastmore course...
I asked Steve when he was going to design a Nat's course back in June and he said without all the lights and Islands he wouldn't know where to start... I said, start by drawing in Islands and light poles...
Like I said in my other post, those were great courses Steve... Makes the trip worth it and keeps us coming back for more...
Wynveen, I loved the course. If you got the entry to the Chicago box wrong, it pinched off all your exit speed. There were multiple ways to "not be fast" on the course. And even after figuring out the course (kind of), there was still the little manner of executing.
I walked the Sunday course with Tim Aro and he was stumped by the back left corner. I liked the way he finally came up with. I was able to execute it only once. At the end of the straight, set up left and dab brakes to get around the first section and then brake hard to super-backside the setup to the wallums. It felt like dab-turn-BRAKE-setup-GO-GO-GO!
Awesome courses.
Intellectually and technically challenging. Steve G, some of those elements might make for good Canterbury fodder....

That's really interesting. I'm curious how other people did it.
I did all my braking before the element, after the big wall on the left. That helped me back-side the entry to the slow part. But I managed to carry just enough speed that the car did a bit of a pendulum swing as I moved the wheel back around to the left. As soon as the car started rotating around the left turn, I got on the gas. It shot me out wide a little, but never enough to hurt my ability to get into the walloms well. Kept me high enough in 2nd gear to not consider downshifting.
That was largely the result of over-cooking it on the first run, and the car actually over-rotated a bit on corner exit. The slide scrubbed speed, probably, but it did indicate to me that the car wasn't going to understeer too much exiting under power, so I just tried to do it again but smoother...
I'm not sure I could have carried much more speed past the right-hand turn to enter the maneuver, as it seems you and Tim were suggesting...but I didn't try it either. Hmmm...maybe there was my missing second-ish...?

I did some heavy trail braking into the right, gave the throttle a slight blip, and dabbed the brakes again just before turning back to the left. That was my best effort to follow the Aro advice Charles passed on to me. I'm not sure how a brake dab would slow the car enough to make the first right. Maybe a change in driving line would have made the difference.
edit: That's how Charles drove it too, but w/o the little throttle blip.
Disclaimer: I didn't get a chance to talk to Tim afterwards to see how his actual strategy changed after he got on course. I guess the actual execution would depend on the hp and tire combination. But his initial point was that he wondered if he couldn't keep a few more mph going through the short section before the hard left to the wallums.

Looking at the data logs, I was wussy-footing the whole course both days. Apparently I have forgotten how to use a gas pedal correctly. Thought I had that little problem whooped last year... I guess I need to start over. Two steps forward, one step back as usual!
Katie and I had the closest competition we've had in ages. We both had a great time dicing back and forth both days. Having five runs was a a blast (especially on Saturday, it allowed us to get a dry run in!). I liked the flow of Saturday's course and I especially liked the offset walloms on the end of Sunday's course. Both courses had very basic elements used in very interesting and challenging ways. Great design and level of difficulty!

2. The Wrolson Racing BMW - loudest MAC car at 107dB
3. Steve's DSP BMW - less than 1dB from the SCCA 103dB limit
4. Harry's CSP Miata - consistently over 100dB
5. Keith's FM car - less than 1dB from the SCCA limit
6. Mosley FM car - consistently over 100dB
FWIW - The Del Long/Cashmore EM car was the loudest of the weekend, with a top reading of 111.3dB.
Looks like the BMod car can join that list, 98.6 on it's one and only Sunday run. Althought it could have been the codriver screaming like a little girl!

Don't forget that decibels are an exponential scale. I wouldn't call it "quiet", but I'd contend that 98.6 is probably a reasonably safe distance from 103.

I was under the impression that locally we were shooting for 95dba.

I was under the impression that locally we were shooting for 95dba. We don't currently have any local sites with noise restrictions. However, we are planning for a 95dB limit at future Eau Claire events.

Not sure about that readings... The car is loud but all other readings were a lot less...

Not sure about that readings... The car is loud but all other readings were a lot less... Your car had other 105 - 106dB readings, so it's LOUD - even with the one higher reading. I already fixed my car - now it's your turn. ;)

Looks like I got my car down to a reliable 97.1 Db, which is still too loud for Eau Claire if we institute the 95 Db limit.
Looks like I need a better muffler if I'm going to attend an Eau Claire event.

Hey, the Polish Civic isn't too loud at all, comparatively speaking. Only ~93 dB
Good thing Jason and Craig fixed their car already... they were around ~95 last weekend.
My favorite comment is on Sunday, heat 2... next to Bob Clark's car "1 DS":
http://www.scca-milwaukee.org/solo/2009/E5/Heat%202%20Sun.pdf
it says "vacuum cleaner" ... then on page 3 it says "electric car"... then again on page 3 it says "solar powered"

Nah, I just wanted some fresh photos of the car, and neither photographer appears to have taken any.

The first set had some of your car with Ryan driving it, I guess those don't count

is this guy really angry because he knows he's about to destroy that cone or does he always make that face driving such a mean car :D:D

That's just Darryl Padberg. He's one of those guys who looks really grumpy, but is actually about the nicest guy you can meet. I suppose you just have to scare off your competition in CP...he's been National Champ a couple times, IIRC.
