Please help spread the word about this excellent event by posting the following announcement on various automotive forums and other relevant websites.

Thanks!

I'd say... yup.

I think our initial concept was a good one- a teen driving school, put on by our club, in the memory of one of our members, a school for the club, by the club, with drivers referred to the school thru the club. Perhaps we (the board and the Paul school team) expected a little to much in the follow thru by club members and their (family and friends) kids. Maybe we (the board and Paul school team) thought there was a greater base of support and interested teens contained within our own ranks.

MY initial thoughts were to take a new, in-experienced, perhaps timid driver and get them behind the wheel in a safe environment, and help them see what they and their car really CAN do, if needed, and how to avoid needing to do it is even better. Fatten up the "area under the curve" for real world experience.

Opening up to the mnsubaru and mnsportcompacts crews is maybe one of our better ideas. Shane and I discussed this and I thank him for getting the word out to them. What is a greater peril on the highway? A timid driver, or one in a high powered car that has no clue what and where the edge of sanity is, thinking they are young and rule the world with their right foot. Perhaps a mix of both in our school is a good thing, to help both ends of the spectrum of new drivers realize thru practical experience that awareness and respect behind the wheel will get you a long ways.

I like the idea of online posting to other clubs and message boards. It would be hard, for example, to pick just one or two high schools to promote this in. But that may be the way this goes in the future- this year this school, next year, a different one. This is our first time ever doing this. The work to organize the school and create material is endless. What we learn about promotion, organization, classroom and instructor manuals, will all go towards a better school next season. Maybe next year we need to explore site dates a little farther away from graduation for the Sr's. Some of our target group may be busy hanging with friends to sign up and show up. Who knows. But I know we'll put on a heck of a school for next to no $$$ and take what we learn to be even better next year.

Now... Lets fill this school!!!!!

I am recruiting a few I think at work.

One point of clarification. Do permitted drivers count, or do they need to have thier "final" drivers license? I am sure I just missed that point of info somewhere, but I am at work just had the question come up from someone.

K i think I can nominate two ppl if room is still available.
I have a question though. I just turned 18 a while ago, have had my driver's license for about a year so i'm still getting used to my car etc. I'm starting auto-xing this year but I was wondering, am I eligible for the event?

Driver permits are good to go. They will have a licensed driver with them when behind the wheel, so it's not a problem.

If you have done our novice school or even an event or 2, you're skills are likely above the level we're intending to teach to in this school. We don't want one really hard charger at the event to perhaps intimidate the rest of the drivers. Its not a test and tune for the car or driver.

With that in mind, get your 2 friends involved, and show up the morning of the event with them. If we're not full, PERHAPS the event master and head instructor will agree to add you to the event. We want to exhaust all options to get our target group involved first.

Initially permit drivers were not on our radar- they should be gaining some skills driving with mom and dad, and thru drivers ed. We didn't want to confuse or overload the influence of the drivers ed program they may be a part of. As the school has been slower filling than expected, (we need to re-visit promotion and event dates for next yr), at the last club membership meeting we decided to, for this season, open to permit drivers.

This event is just around the corner. If you have any friends/family that are just kinda thinking of signing up, now is the time! Still holding at 15 students, we have room for 24, so talk this up at work today and tomorrow.

Anyone in the know,

Will the Teen Driving School still be held if it's raining on Sunday? Or do we have a rain-date?

Thanks,

Looks like online registration is closed. Can students still sign up? I have a driver with a permit (taking her drivers test on Tuesday) who might be interested.

Looking forward to this!

I just extended online registration through midnight tonight. We should also be able to accept onsite registrations (assuming someone brings a few copies of the mail-in registration form).

Waivers are in the registration box in the MAC truck. The box is clearly labelled. Just like any event, make sure EVERYONE on the site signs the waiver sheet and gets a wristband. I believe there are Minor Waivers in the registration box as well.

I'll be driving the truck and trailer. Everything we need should be there. I'll try to arrive around 7-7:30 if that works. Let me know if you want the truck there earlier.

Mark, You may want to just leave the trailer at the storage site. I don't think there's anything in the trailer that's required for the event, and you'll probably end up unhooking it to drive the truck around anyway.

Now that I think about it, the trailer might be a nice place for the registration/waiver folks to hang out if it's raining tomorrow morning.

We can hold registration/waivers in the classroom building. There's a nice hallway between the class and kitchen.

I'd highly recommend getting waivers signed before you let anyone through the gate. If you don't put someone by the gate to limit access, it's too easy for people to simply wander onto the site. You could just post someone with the waiver sheet at the gate, then send everyone to the classroom building for check-in, etc.

On a related note - make sure you put someone by the gate all day to limit access. Just have the worker park just inside the gate - it will give them a place to sit & stay dry.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to make it for conehead duty. I think I ate something that didn't agree with me, or is trying to kill me. If I'm not busy puking in the toilet, I'll be there.

Steve G and Mike: thanks for being on the ball to double check some of the details of the site organization. I think even w/out Ryan, if he's still under the weather, that Steve B will have a surplus of help, and could probably offer up a guy for gate duty.

Good luck to all involved.

thanks-

David

Is this just for cars, and not trucks or SUV's? I have a feeling my dad's Jeep Wrangler could roll a bit easier than you guys might like for some of the maneuvers.. if not then I'll hope to have my own car by then.

On another note, I just learned to drive stick today, without ever stalling the engine, 5 days after getting my permit 8)

You will need something non-SUV, and not off road 4wd. Any car that will pass the tech inspection will do, does not need to be a "sports car", so you have plenty of time to find a car or line up one to borrow.
