Who's going?
I'm planning on it at this point, but my co-driver has bailed... maybe someone's interested in driving the subaru :p
Plans? Hotels? Etc?
I'm thinking a down Friday night, back Sunday afternoon? I'm kind of the ANTI morning person.

Any event would be good to start with. Two day weekends are the way to go down there to maximize what you get out of the trip.

Hey Larry, I'm in for sharing a room..
Cheaper is better in my book... it's pretty much just a "Sleeping Box" for these short trips.
i can try and find something if you'd like... Kyak.com usually has good rates.
EDIT: I found the howard johnson by the airport has some good rates, and seems nice enough to crash in for 2 nights.

How many runs per day? And what is the difference between the CenDiv and MidDiv?
We should get 6 runs a day. This isn't a divisional event, so it doesn't count for Nationals event.
miata#37
06-13-2009, 08:24 AM
How many runs per day? And what is the difference between the CenDiv and MidDiv?
The SCCA divides the country up into "divisions". Each "Division" is divided up into "Regions" like "Milwaukee Region", "Des Moines Valley Region", "Iowa Region", etc. Each Region can be compared to an individual club like MAC or COM. The Twin Cities and Milwaukee, and "Iowa Region" are in the Central Division, hence the term CenDiv for their Divisional events. The Midwest Division is mostly south of here and is made up of Des Moines Valley Region, Nebraska Region, and Kansas City Region, to name a few. Their Divisional events are called MidDiv's. There is a "MidDiv" championship event coming up later this year at the Lincoln Nationals site, which happens to be located in the Midwest Division.
oldtoyota
06-13-2009, 09:00 AM
If one was picking CenDiv or MidDiv it seems like someone located in the TC area is better off attending the MidDiv this year. Or can't you go if you are not in the region?
washburn
06-13-2009, 09:22 AM
You can go to any ones you like. Your probably right, if you're going to do only one Divisional and that will be your Nationals "qualifier" event, you are better off seeing what the surface at Lincoln is like. I like Milwaukee's just because they are way fun!

Two single day events, one Saturday and one Sunday. Yes, it's a long drive, and it involves staying in a hotel. Some people think we are crazy, but the competition is fierce, with all the best drivers from Milwaukee and Chicago in attendance. Also the site is huge, Miller Park has been called the best site in the midwest... always good for Nationals-style courses. So yes, we're going out there for two single day events, but for some of us, it's well worth it. :D

I can't speak for all the parties involved (or ANY for that matter), but I know there will be a few single driver STX cars there from this side of the chedder (cheddar?) curtain, and there's always the pro class for those that have 2 drivers....

...and there's always the pro class for those that have 2 drivers....
Is there an advantage to running Pro for two-driver cars?
More than 2 drivers per class just gets tough to manage. I don't recall what the official SCCA stance is on numbers of drivers in a single car/class it's just easier to toss a couple into the PRO class...

Anybody want a co-driver or three? Katie won't be making it this weekend, but Ivan, Gretchen, and I are eager to join the party.
Unfortunately, I can't leave until later Friday afternoon. But we may possibly be able to offer a cushy tow vehicle and trailer for one car, at least...

Would you and Ivan be interested in running the F500 in Pro?
I'd extend the offer to Gretchen too, but I've seen pictures of her in the car.

Another idea: The front plate may be bolted directly to the receiver holes in the front bumper (without a bracket). That's the way is it on our Honda. I put some felt in back of the plate at the contact points and it's just an easy on / off with the two bolts. The Wisconsin cops were INSANE last time we went through.

On the road they feel grippy but not as crisp as the narrower and bald RE01's they replaced. We'll see how they handle the course. This will be my first time out on the Chris' Kooks as well.

Work/life has been absolutely nutty the last few days (looong story), so I apologize for not getting back to any of those who has generously offered a ride.
After possibly not being able to go at all due to other issues, it now looks like I'll be reprising my role with the Wrolson Wracing Team for Saturday. But I still haven't had a chance to catch up with anyone about Sunday yet...
What happened to the TOO banana? Or is it a mystery?
Actually, they are still somewhat of a mystery. We're narrowing one issue down to a cooling problem. The other sounds like a bearing in the drive line. Hopefully just a throw-out bearing (somewhat known problem on the RX8, I think?), but worried it could be in the transmission or rear end...it just kinda echos all around the car under slight load.

We were driving in the slow lane on I-90 to Milwaukee when a van pulled slowly alongside and started pacing us. I was working on my Minnesota Passive-Aggressive "look straight ahead" when I noticed the passenger with his face pressed against the glass. I turned my head and it was 3/4ths of TOO in the Vannel. Killer competitive weekend in Milwaukee so far!
Darryl and Ivan separated in STX by *one one thousandth*.
Gretchen and Larry going 1-2 in STS.
Tim Aro leading PAX by like 4 tenths, beating FM.
I finally got my car to rotate, causing Bob Clarke to spin it. :P
13 of us in STX, I'm sitting in 6th, at 50th on PAX. ow. Getting beat by an RSX. I changed rear ride height five times today.
Not sure about the rest, Pat and Chris seem to be chasing unknown setup gremlins, Nikki and Matt seem to be enjoying their first Milwaukee experience.

Well that was an experience. It was fun to see so many familiar faces so far away. It made it feel a little like a home event away from home. The operations of the event seemed very familiar as well. They run a tight ship and put out a great product. I see where MAC get’s a lot of its inspiration.
Talk about jumping into the deep end. I convinced Chris that we should enter in the pro class because I wanted to see what it would be like running with a group of National contenders. It turns out I don’t enjoy being pummeled. The Pro class in Milwaukee is a quick crowd to say the least.
I haven’t decided yet how to rate my driving. Chris was pleased with his driving and I was close to his times so I should be pleased. Overall I suppose I drove pretty well, all things considered. Still it was disappointing being beaten so soundly. I’m not so sure I’d insist on Pro class next time.
I got my first taste of the Hankooks. It took me some time to get used to the response being slower than the much narrower tires I was used to. Now they feel like the new normal. They do have serious grip. Sunday morning Chris and I mounted up my new AD08’s and gave them a work out. They actually seem quite similar in feel and maybe performance to the Hankooks. Only the data logger, and soon Chris (the data doctor) Bienert know for sure.
I was introduced to the Saturday night beer walk by Pat. It is a social gathering where you bench race, drink boutique beer and walk the next day’s course. Very cool. Thank you Pat. I don’t really like beer but his was pretty good.
Thank you to the Milwaukee folks for the fine events.

The joy of "pro" class in Milwaukee... the deep end indeed! I was happy to be 13th out of 19 in Pro... the benefit of the class, for me, is the AM+PM format which MAC has also recently adopted. Basically, I had a decent run in the morning, but in the afternoon my first 2 runs were dirty. Coming into my last run of the day, I absolutely HAD to put down a clean run, and hopefully not too slow. This is where the pro class begins preparing you for national events... not just the competition, but the added pressure. ;)
I'm surprised Sunday results are posted but Saturday's are not... Pat and I did quite poorly on Saturday, a problem we believe is tire-related. We had brand new tires and they didn't seem "ready" to work yet. They got better with every run. Today was much better, as the tires started to come in, and we also borrowed Chris B's Hankooks in the afternoon for testing. Something tells me we are going to be testing tires all season, and maybe forever and ever.
The competition this weekend was fierce. The best indication are the PAX results, which are so stacked it's hard to believe. MAC had a very good showing, with Pat W., Darryl, Mensch, Steve J., Neal making top 20 today. Pretty amazing with the level of competition out there... Matt M. and myself just missed the top 20 but close enough... ;)
I'm tired now and ready for sleep.
Red Eye Beer FTW!

great event but frustrating.
We corded 5 and maybe 6 tires and had to go begging for tires.
On Saturday, before we corded I was a couple tenths behind Harry Aro (with Tim Aro coaching him) so I was in the game but then the tires were gone. We limped around in the afternoon runs and did not have any tire left while Harry and Tim had put a on a fresh set. TIm went on to PAX #1 in a CSP car, no small feat.
It was my first really hot day of this summer and I was pretty drained by the end of the day but I did make it back for beer walks and was chided for drinking "imported" beer by one of the locals - Corona
On Sunday, I put on a couple old spares on the front and Harry was very nice to let me run a couple of his older tires. We had a good morning and I was within a tenth of Harry (but coned it somehow). In the afternoon, it seemed like the grip fell off a bit for both CSP cars and for our 5th and 6th runs our front tires were just starting to cord. My last run I pulled of a pretty good run and pulled within .4 of Harry, not bad considering I was running on cored front tires :). Barry got better and better driving my car and was driving well but he didn't think so.
The PAX battle was very tight, if you picked up a .1 you could jump 5 places on the board

Ouch...what does "dead " mean? Sorry to hear...welcome to Modified! Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
As Chris said, Saturday was just plain crappy. Just like when I showed up in Chris Deutsch's Evo in new Yoks and sucked it up. Same thing apparently. Between heats on Sat, I did re-check the rear alignment and found that Robert Goulet had come in the middle of the night and messed with it. Had to reset camber and toe. Car felt better, but not good enough. I ended up 29th in index and Chris was top 50 I think. That hurt. Oh yeah, found out how to make Jason Franks instantly do an index winning run: Just put your data-logger in his car!!
Sunday felt much better as the tires were starting to "come in". They seemed much better and apparently did need that scrubbing in to get good. Thanks to Chris B, we got to do another back-to-back test with the Hankooks. Both Chris and I liked these better again, and it allowed me to at least get within a half second of the index winning Jason. (BTW, I did have a huge sideways moment on that run thet Max says cost me 3 tenths...so it could have been closer. I think I could have caught him given more runs.) Much better. So we're back to where we started in terms of how far back we are from the top. More stuff to do though, so we are trying not to get discouraged....we are still in the early learning stages in this car.
Great fun as usual...it was great seeing everyone there!! Matt and Nicky seemed to be enjoying their first trip, as was Jay. Sorry I didn't get to hang with or talk to a lot of you....there's almost too many people to keep up with, and do your competition stuff too! That's why I always enjoyed the gatherings after runs are done and people get cleaned up. Let's us take the time and visit with everyone. I feel bad not being able to stop and talk for awhile when everything is happening and I'm busy trying to get somewhere. I hope we can do that for the CenDiv event...we usually set up "Little Minnesota" and all gather back there at the site for bench racing, fun, and beer walks!! I love hearing everyone's 'stories' of the day. They will be bringing food in for Saturday night, so it's a great opportunity to do this. Depending on whether I bring the motorhome or not, there may some grilling and beer tasting too!!! Gotta fuel up for the Tri Pod Challenge!!!!

Hey, how about that! I trophied both days, and Nikki trophied on Sunday. That's pretty cool.
Any chance someone could get those for us next time? That would be great.
First trip to Milwaukee was fun, and at the same time, amazingly draining. I think Saturday's scorcher wore me out more than I suspected. The courses were really fun, wide-open, and fast on a nice flat surface. Don't know how well suited the ITR is for my "driving style" where I could have used a little t-o-r-q-u-e low in 2nd gear coming out of a couple of those turns.
What would I like to have changed? Hmm. I would have liked the weekend to be longer so I could have at least fit in Pat's beer walk. Maybe tone down the sun a little on Saturday. Otherwise, great weekend -- we're saving our pennies to do it again soon. It was really cool to see so many MAC people there too -- felt like home. :)

The courses were among the most fun I've driven. Typical Milwaukee layouts, with plenty of fast transitions & big sweepers. Ryan kicked my butt on Saturday, and I returned the favor on Sunday. The car worked flawlessly all weekend, and the latest spring rate change finally got the front/rear balance just right. Our PAX rankings were nothing to write home about, but we were on some pretty well-aged Hoosiers that were far past their prime - especially on Sunday afternoon. Driving on fresh tires at CenDiv's should be amusing. 8)

Well I had a BLAST! It's always great fun to have a big crowd from home at the away games, and I can't remember a time when we had more folks show up!
Kerry had a good time throwing the Mustang around (I think I might need to beg a co-drive in that thing again soon), and was making big improvements through out the day.
Darryl, Neal and I played around the BMW (well OK, it was mostly Neal), and it was killer fun as always. I had to settle for 3rd on Saturday (after Darryl "SLAPPED" Ivan back to second by a scathing .001 seconds!), and even though I lead Sunday at the mid day point Darryl found another flyer (that was good for 10th in PAX!) and put me on the trailer, but I stall made 12 in PAX, so it's not like I went home unhappy!

Happy to see another well-prepared non SpecCivic ST car--please come back often!
Had I not coned away my 6th run, I'd have been in 3rd--just a few ticks off of Mike. Knowing your/his car's history--and knowing I have less than 100 runs in the Escort, makes me feel fairly good about where we are at this point. This was the first decent-weather event in the ZX2 with a setup that actually gave me some confidence in the back end of the car (only swapped ends once :D). Our forward bite is still lacking--but we really did not know it was as bad as it is because the back was always wanting to pass the front until now. Such is life when you try and do something off the beaten path--still lots of fun for sure!

I ended up 29th in index and Chris was top 50 I think. That hurt.
Don't sell yourself short... you were 28th! ;) Yeah I was 36th on Saturday. I found that the results are out there, just not linked from the main solo results page. check it out:

How come there is an A-Stock Evo in 'rear drive street tire'? (11th finish)
He was driving the S2K CR and did not change his car that was listed.
So a point of clarification for my own knowledge:
I never noticed before, but T-class (and in Milwaukee A-F-R classes) get PAX'd on their sticky tire multiplier, correct?
So people who PAX at number X, might actually be a lot better if they got indexed with sticky tires while on street tires and vice-versa if people PAX'd #Y, they actually could be Y+20 since some really excellent street tire drivers did proportionally better.
Is that correct? Is there a street tire multiplier for PAX?
For example: Alex Moss in an 08 CR did very well driving in R-AS. He's listed at 77th in PAX with the standard AS 0.843 multiplier. If you subtract the 2 seconds that Hoosiers would have saved him, you get a corrected time of 46.27 which would put him in approximate 29th PAX spot.
And conversely, Tom Weaver in ES was PAXed in 33rd spot... would actually be bumped lower by as many as 6-10 people if you correct the top drivers in the street tire classes.
I was really impressed by Todd Cochran's AS driving this weekend and wondered why I hadn't noticed him at the top of the leaderboard in MAC standings... in retrospect it's the "PAX penalty" of the uncorrected street tire that kept him off the radar (and maybe made me think I was doing better than I was... by inflating my MAC mid-PAX results).
Just a thought.
Nice driving, Todd, Neal, Ivan, John M., Darryl, Chris B., G. Jay! Lots of fun seeing the MAC crew there! Congrats on the trophies Nikki, Matt, Larry, and Gretchen! Congrats to my favorite co-driver, Jocelin who kicked my butt on the last run!

Can of worms!

No, there is no street tire multiplier. You say 2 seconds for Hoosiers, but is that true? Do we have any proof, and does that same 2 second penalty work for all classes? I don't want to get into it, but this topic has been discussed ad nauseam on a number of online forums.
Yes, the street tire classes are indexed against one another appropriately based on their class, (once you get over the fact that PAX/RTP index assumes a 100% prepped car). And it's true that a guy like Chris Fenter, who was on street tires in "R" class, normally would be in the top 10 PAX if he was on race rubber. But he wasn't on race rubber, and so he wasn't in the top 10.

Oh, BTW -- Thanks Brookfield, WI for having a low crime rate -- we didn't have the car stolen once all weekend!
(Though, driving through the multiple middle-of-the-street drug deals north of Miller Park on the way home from Wendy's was a little exhilarating.)

Sorry man, this stuff doesn't work on a TYPE-R. People who steal Type-Rs usually use flatbeds.

Thanks, Erik.
I was pretty impressed by what you did in your car, especially considering the limited amount of time you've had to get it dialed in.
Now go get yourself some Toyos to improve that forward bite. :)

Well, i had a great time this weekend!
i've been holding off posting, as i had my new little camcorder in the back, and i wanted to wait until i had them edited and uploaded (or atleast a few of them)
Saturday, Ivan was left without a ride as the Banana seems to need to be refrigerated properly... so i offered Team Stiggles pride and joy, the WRX. Ivan seemed to take to the WRX like a fish takes to bacon. wait. is that right? anyway, he drove the wheels of the damn thing, and i felt like a proud papa! after 1 run, ivan managed to put the car into the lead, and fought back and forth with daryl and john for the lead. Daryl managed to take it... by one onethousandth of a second. that's .001 seconds.
The car can do it, i can't..... yet. and i haven't felt that confidence about the car ever. i really appreciate ivan hot shoeing it, and really showing me what she can do. plus, he's pretty good at sandwich delivery.
I on the other hand, managed to put the same car into 7th with a 61.854, .425 seconds behind Murph.
Sunday, ivan decided to take it easy, so i ran the scooby alone. i felt alot like i was playing some chicken moves through some areas, carring too much speed here, braking too late there... but everything i did, found it kept sticking in the slalom... that was where i managed to make up time. i brought her into 7th out of 16 with a 57.413, .362 out of 6th.
So, how about some videos?
The camera is a Kodak Zi6. shoots in beautiful 720p and 60fps... the video is awesome.

I've never seen it lift the inside rear quite like this:

Must have been Mike using that left foot braking (I'm too much of an amateur for that funny business you fast guys use).

Is there a street tire multiplier for PAX?
No extra PAX for street tires so the PAX is only reasonable within the street tire group. It is a little suspect even then because the delta between r-comp and street tires may not really be the same for all classes.
Thanks Charles, I didn't feel so quick at the time but I didn't realize the altered world I'd entered in the Milwaukee Pro class. I need to manage my expectations better (emotions too). Chris drove great and had me covered all weekend. At the rate he's been improving his driving and the car he's going to be the one insisting on Pro class.
It looked like you and Jocelin were driving well and having a good running battle in a very tough and huge R class. I only saw a couple of runs of yours but I did see the first reverse Rockford finish ever.:rockon That was worth the price of entry. I was surprised to see you Sunday only, too bad you couldn't make it on Saturday too.

Great pics from Andy as usual. Too bad he was running in my heat!
I need to start getting some super Pro shots of the Red Eye/Lucky Lugnyt Racing civic for my sponsors. Anyone skilled in the ways of picture taking going to be in Eau Claire Sunday?

I think you did very well for your first time in Milwaukee. Getting to know the site offers a little more of a "home course" advantage as elements wind up being used and reused. There are parts of the lot that are notoriously less grippy than others (tent pole hole section in the near left).
It looked like you and Jocelin were driving well and having a good running battle in a very tough and huge R class. We're trying something new to improve our driving. Some street tire action to punish us when we're being unsmooth. With such great MAC talent on street tires, we're able to make better apples-to-apples comparisons to highlight our problem areas. It's taking us a little bit of seat time to get used to the difference in tire compound and width, though. I misjudged off-throttle turn in a few places and did a lot of "double-steering." I know Jocelin had trouble gauging braking zones on a few places. I really wish MAC had more ridealong capability, that's one of my favorite things about Milwaukee region events.
I really wanted to run on Saturday, but Jocelin had things to do in Chicago and we hung out with my folks that day. Trying to strike a better balance autocrossing this year. :rockon
