Sorry for the late posting on this, i thought josh already had posted it...
I will be hosting a Timing PHD school at Dunwoody, Saturday, April 25th.
Class will start at 9 AM.
What is Timing PHD?
Well, it's a program me and josh have come up with as an off site method to teach people the ins and outs of the timing software we use, Axware. this is in hopes to harvest more people for the timing talent pool, and ensure future events run smoothly.
Who should attend?
Anyone who has had some time in the timing trailer before, who understands the basic duties and such behind the timing crew, and wants to learn more about what to do in an emergency situation, during setup, etc.
I'm also requesting that any prior Timing PHDs who can attend, do. we have new wireless timing gear this year, so setup and use is a little different, this will be a chance to set it up and tune it in a non-competitive enviornment.
When: Saturday April 25th - 9 Am
Where: Dunwoody College of Technology
Cost: $0.00... and you may even get some left over doughnuts from the novice school guys! :rockon
Post here if you plan to attend, and i will post a list.
if you have any questions, feel free to post them.
Attendance List:
1. Josh Karsten
2. Steve Garnjobst
3. Joshua King
4.
5.
6.

I want to emphasize that existing Timing PhD's should seriously consider attending this session. The club just purchased a bunch of new wireless timing equipment, so there's plenty that you haven't heard/seen before.

p.s. I'll be there

What should a guy do if he has no timing trailer experience but is interested in learning about it before jumping in at an event?

Andrew - I would say go for it. I was in the timing trailer for one event last year and it was a totally different experience than working the course. I really enjoyed it. My experience was you need to be equally as focused in the trailer as you need to be while driving.
I would love to attend but cannot because the Get in Gear half is that day.
I'll be there to see the new equipment.

I was wondering that myself. I did work the timing trailer during the novice school last year, but that's all I've done.
While I don't intend to be a PhD any time soon, I was hoping to get a chance to try working timing this year.

Pretty good, I'd say, as I'm unfortunately going to be missing the Novice School/Timing PhD.

Hey Scott,
I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but to be honest the Timing PhD class is really not geared for absolute novices. It'll make much more sense to you after you've seen a few events.
We will almost certainly be having another PhD school later this summer, so I encourage you to work timing at several events (get there early so you can sign-up to work in the timing trailer) and if you're still interested, watch for a posting about the next PhD class.
That said, Shane is going to be teaching this class so if he says he's cool with you attending this one, well then you're good to go.
Regards,
- Josh

You have to get a Bachelor's degree before you can get your PhD...

If you want to, come out on Sunday of the novice school. I don't see a big problem with you obeserving/participating in the timing trailer while we are running cars. Why not...if you're interested, by all means come along.

Unfortunately I can't attend this one, but I'll check it out before the novice school Sunday.

We added wireless for the main set of timing heads, and purchased a second display, which is also wireless.
We chose not to get a standalone timer at this point. FWIW - we now have four fully functional laptops - any of which can serve as a timer.

sounds like we're moving in the right direction!
How confident are we in the wireless timing heads? If they are reliable, that will be tremendous at DCTC.
And FM transmitters!
I know I like to hear the run time announcements of the cars going past. Might have to find one of the cheapy radios lying around for the remote corners of DCTC.

Ok,
There seems to be alot of interest by first timers in the trailers besides the people who have some experience.
I'm going to split this.
If you have worked in the trailer before, at any point within the last 2 years:
you can come to the classroom session Saturday. If your looking for feild experience beyond what i provide, your welcome to come sunday to the novice school driving day to see it all in action, and get some hands on.
If you haven't worked in the trailer yet:
if you want to learn about the timing and scoring aspect, I'd prefer to not go through classroom with you at this point. you're welcome to come to the Sunday driving portion of the novice school though, and get some in trailer experience before a big event. The other oppourtunity that will be coming is the TnT.
If there's enough interest in a month or so, after we have a few events under our belt, we can probably swing another timing phd, assuming we can get some classroom space.

The system is actually an add on to our current equipment. if something happens with the wireless, we can swap back to wired with very little additional work.
Redundancy is the name of the game... and we like that.

We're working on some FM Solutions. we have a transmitter right now, but it needs some tuning, possibly more work. we do hope to have a functional FM solution this year though.

...provided we know we have some long run cables that work. Have we sorted all that out yet? I'd be happy to help out if you want to have a testing party sometime.
