Hi, If you can't already tell I'm new here, and I have a few questions about the Novice school in April. I've figured out that I need to register for it via Myautoevents, and having looked through the details on the registration pages, I have not found any mention of whether a helmet is required for the school or not.
Speaking of which could you guys recommend a place in the southern metro, or anywhere in the TC for that matter which stocks a selection of helmets so that I could go and try on several to find one that fits me correctly.
Also if I have a friend that is interested in attending the school, will he need to bring his own car or can we share mine?

You will have to be wearing a helmet however it doesn't matter if you bring you own because there are club helmets which you can borrow.
You can share cars.

Bob's Cycle supply in Roseville is where I picked up my M2005 helmet, they had a pretty good selection.

Bob's Cycle Supply is a good Twin Cities source. Northeast of Hiway 36 and Rice Street intersection in Roseville. This is where I've bought my last 3 helmets, and where MAC and COM have bought their current club helmets. Be sure the helmet has a Snell Foundation sticker and date. Current Snell helmets should have Snell 2005 stickers and as recent a date as you can find. Snell "M" rating is sufficient. Bob's probably won't have any "SA" rated helmets like you'd need for actual SCCA wheel to wheel racing. Don't buy a helmet with just "DOT" or "Z90" or "Z90.1" approval--they wouldn't be legal for Met Council autocross. Also don't buy a Snell 2000 helmet--they probably won't be legal once the 2010 helmets come out in about a year.

South metro? See if Midwest Cycle Supply is still operating on Lyndale. Call them and Bob's and ask for a price on their cheapest Snell helmet (probably HJC).

Yes, you can share a car. The school is run in groups. When we divide the groups, be sure that you and your friend are not in the same group.

Autocross novice school registration opens tonight at midnight, don't be slow! This school sometimes sells out in hours.

What's the price range for helmets?
$50-$200+
The base open-faced HJC at the low end is pretty popular.

Watch the for sale area closely, there are usually a few people that can't make it due to something coming up at the last minute.

Watch the for-sale forum for someone selling a seat because he has suddenly been called to Slobovia on business.
Start your own Wanted thread with yourself first on the list.
One thing you could do is show up at Midway on Sunday and volunteer to work the event. Bring your own lunch. We will require you to sign the waiver. We won't take any money from you.
What you can do:
Learn how an event works and experience the ambiance.
Participate in cone-replacement therapy.
Listen to the questions and answers that will abound around you.
Watch the cars while students are learning.
Watch the cars while instructors are driving just after lunch. It is at this time that your cone-replacement services will be most valuable to the club, since this is the period we are most stretched for workers.
What you can't do:
Drive a car. Only registered students can drive.
Ride in a car. The shotgun seats during the instructor-drive session are reserved for students. There are always students standing in line for rides.
