By virtue of being the Driver Ed guy on the board, I'm hatching a plan of how to make all this work, but to make it work, we'll all need to pitch in a bit. I have had some help from Sitz, Steve Buetow, and Shane on gathering info to set up how and what we'll be doing, and now that I'm back from Hurricane adjusting, am hard at work to pull all this togather into a plan.
But there will be additional help needed to make it all happen. I"m thinking 20-25 folks to give up a day on the 12th, and a couple hrs on the 11th to meet and go thru the details. As this is our first crack at a school such as this, we have nothing to loose, and experience to gain. Perfect is not even on the radar, I'm shooting for a safe, educational, fun experience for the students.
I'm looking for help in the following areas:
We need 4 people to be presenters. You will work in teams of 2. These folks will need to be able to keep a 15-18 yr old group engauged for some classroom information. I will be providing a "script" of what we want to cover for each session, but the exact words used are yours. You will have the chance to set the expectations and will be the first impression to the students. Outgoing, perhaps education or sales would be good, people person. If "wiki, or facebook" mean nothing to you, maybe you're not the right person for this age group. (just kidding).
We need 6 people for general set up/course work. These will be the silent heros of the team, showing up early, staying late. You guys/gals will be the gofer crew, doing what needs to be done. Setting up classroom area, setting up food, and most importantly, doing a fast and efficent re-set of the cones used on course when the exercises change from one teaching senario to the next. There will be 3 change overs. You will also be cone pickers should there be a few knocked over. Perhaps a truck driving enabled board member to be part of this group to get the club truck to the site, and help as my right hand man. Scripts/handouts/diagrams will be provided. Bring lawn chairs, as you'll not be busy on your feet the whole day, but need to be availible when needed.
We need instuctors. If we have 24 students sign up, and are running 2 groups, thats minimum 12. I'd prefer more in case we have any personality issues and need to re-assign a coach/student combo, or someone has an emergency mid event and has to leave. Coaches is a better word, as you will be encouraging the young drivers outside and inside the cars. This position has NOTHING to do with speed, auto cross, or words like "apex". If I hear anyone utter the word "apex" or any other auto cross related word, I will take you out behind the stadium and beat you with a tire iron. If you're bigger than me I'll get help from the set up crew. I would encourage those who are NOT currently club approved event instructors to think about this spot, as you'll be less likely to get into go-fast mode, although club instructors are welcome. You will be assigned 2 students to ride with for the whole event, so you better be friendly and agreeable, since you'll be spending the day with 2 strange teenagers. Again, scripting will be provided to outline the expectations for this group, but your activities in the cars and words will be your own.
Now. Don't everyone jump on the "I wanna be a coach" bandwagon. As a coach you have a greater responsibility as you need to be keenly aware of the fear factor of the student, and push them to get closer to the limits of the car and themselves, but not scare them. Some of the younger males who have seen fast and furious to many times, or think they have mastered driving cuz they play GT3 you'll need to reel in. And you have to do this and stay friends with them ALL DAY. No instructor swapping except in extreme cases where the student is about ready to shoot you or cry. We want some consistancy here which is why there are day long instructor/student pairings, to put a little comfort level into the program. So you need to be flexable but firm.
I plan to be the roaming organizer guy. I'll do the greeting/opening with the students, and to introduce everyone, set the expectations for the day. From there, I will be floating between the classroom, listening in on things, observing the driving and how the students are doing with the 3 different courses we'll use, maybe riding along with a few students, assisting with the course change overs, and whatever else needs doing.
I would like to have a MANDITORY meeting on the 11th, probably late afternoon at a resturant type place and we can talk things over, have a little Q/A, get some food, and be ready for sunday. We can set the time/location as the date gets closer. And I mean MANDITORY. Sinced we've not done this before as a club, or as individuals, and due to my work the time table is compressed, I want to get us togather as a group and run thru the event organization and work assignment expectations, and kick some ideas around between the work groups, to try to be as prepaired as we can be. I will need to bring an open mind to this meeting as there will be alot of my time, effort, and emotion into the school, and I'm sure everyone will have thoughts on how they may have done this or that differently. Small ideas to add to the scripting we'll add on the spot. Gross changes to the program I'll take note of, observe the event to see if its a better way or not, and next year, with one event behind us, and more time (hopefully) to prepare, we can further refine the program and maybe relax a little as we set the school up and get organized sooner.
Reply to this thread to indicate your interest. I'm a big phone guy, I'd like phone #'s to contact each of you, as well as an email addy. If you're not comfortable putting it out on the forum, PM it to me. If we have more who want to help than I think we need, I reserve the right to pick and choose as I see fit to fill the spaces as needed, and to re-assign you to a different group if I think its better for the school. This will have nothing to do with if you're my buddy or not, although I'm sure I'll know some of you better than others, but is based on my desire to field the best roster for each group that we can.
Thank you-
